tv April Ryan Under Fire CSPAN December 30, 2018 11:02am-11:16am EST
11:02 am
11:03 am
what's the difference covering president trump and some of the other presidents that you've covered? >> there's a huge difference. the biggest difference with the other presidents i've covered the last 3 even though they did not agree was, there was respect, we understood that we had to work with one another, with this administration w -- with this administration this president looks at us as the enemy and when we tell the truth and tell the facts, he believes we are the opposition, he believes that we have an agenda, we are one of the pillars of the foundation of this nation, what the founding fathers put in place. it's just -- it's awkward, painful deadly time compared to prior administration's that i've covered. >> what's a typical day at the
11:04 am
white house? >> most days there's no briefing. you wait for him to speak, you wait for him to take your question or not take your question. it's a different day. it's a very different day. the dynamic has changed. we are losing ground when it comes to being a part, we are not finding out the things about what's happening, what the president's thought pattern is to a certain issue of policy but we will hear him when he allows us to come in. we used to have more back and forth with press secretary and it's different. we are part of that because they don't like us, we are under fire, if you will, i am under fire for questions that we ask and it's a different day. we have to see how this plays out. >> april ryan, we have seen the public interaction between you and sarah huckabee sanders.
11:05 am
[laughter] >> is it different privately between you and the sentence. >> no. what is unfortunate is that i've had a great relationship with everyone i've worked with until this administration, we tried to reset but as long as sarah huckabee sanders is performing for an audience of one, her boss, daddy boss i call, the president of the united states, she will never have a kind word to say to me or a friendly way to treat me, friendly adversary way to treat me in that room or building. it's bad, it's really bad and what i try to do is just keep my head up and do my job, it's not about me, it's about the story, it's about the issue, it's not about me. the first book presidency black and white and this one under fire, similarities and differences between the two books?
11:06 am
>> big differences. this book is about me. as a journalist you're not supposed to be the story and i had to take you inside to the fight, the real fight, the arguments, the name calling, the back and forth, why they put me on a blacklist, why they don't like me. i have to tell you i brought you inside, i took the vial off, mystery in the white house bringing glow from my view as reporter who has covered placed for 21 year and four presidents and what is different now, the danger, how it all started, and just the difference of this atmosphere versus atmospheres of years ago. and it's my story, it's true and it was painful. it was hard to write this. the others -- the other book, the first book, i let people talk and tell their story.
11:07 am
everyone has a story, i don't like telling my own because i'm reporting on other people and it was tough. >> your life has changed quite a bit since the trump administration came into office. you're a regular on cnn now, you've been a lot more public. >> well, see and i'm glad that you brought that up, you know, sean spicer and sarah, the president and even steve bannon has said, you're huge now because of us, no i was always there and people want to say that i did this, no, you put the spotlight on me by telling know stop shaking my head when i didn't shake my head. you put the spotlight on me when you told me to get cbc together for a meeting, i didn't doe do that, you did that. so i've been doing this for a long time. i've been out there. when it comes to cnn, we have been talking, there were things going on prior to, but just kind of happened at the same time but this president did not make me.
11:08 am
i am baltimore made, morgan state made, i'm april made, i was prepared for the time. >> presidents clinton, w. bush, obama and trump, one story from each. >> one story, bill clinton the race initiative, black journalists and bill clinton talking about race, george w. bush, two stories, i toured the gallery across the street from the white house, we walked with first lady laura bush and we toured exhibit and we watched crafted quilts and in that space we saw quilt and we saw elderly women who felt the stain of slavery, jim crow and raised
11:09 am
hand, thank you, jesus, started to cry because they felt that the highest office in the land was paying attention to them and george w. bush, i have so much. we've had a great conversation all of the time about issues of race and one of the things that stand out in my mind about him is the night that barack obama was named president, 44th president of the united states. not trump -- the bush's would go to bed at 9:30 at night, the lights until 11:00 until he was named president and i will never forget the spontaneous crowd that came to the white house, i was at the white house and i heard kids chanting but he celebrated change in history for barack obama. he told me a week prior to that, he saw the racism that was going on, i was shocked, you know, the honesty and the conversation and
11:10 am
i will never forget the day barack obama, the day after he was elected and he was in the oval office very upset and i don't know what was going on, he was pacing back and forth, we were waiting for him to come out, we were in the rose garden and he had steve and others in the office, he was very angry and turned to french doors and he saw me and stopped and we both laughed, changed the atmosphere in the room. now the story of this president -- >> what about president obama. >> president obama, good story, travel to go africa with him, doing interviews with him on air force one and i don't tell the story a lot but it's not about politician or policy, it's a personal thing when he was leaving office he and michelle obama were leaving the white house, they said good-bye and
11:11 am
that was special and it was -- it was touching for me. it's not about politician or policy, my children saw themselves in these two historic persons in this white house and now to president trump, what do i think about the most, the thing that i think about him is can you get the cbc together, i think about why i'm in the the center of the fire for them because of omarosa, the residue still lingers and the day that i asked the president are you a racist, january 2018 and now we are at latter part of 2018 and people have calling it out and they were very angry with me for asking that question but if you remember the lead-up to that
11:12 am
question, people were saying it and think about charlottesville and johnston and how they treated congresswoman wilson and i think about the build-up to that question, look, what is the definition of a racist, they said the intersection or meeting of power and prejudice so i asked the question, he never answered me and he answered that question like 3 days later that sunday, but now the nation is bringing that question up to again and i'm in trouble for that, but i'm a reporter who sees what's going on. i listen to the wind, i listen to my sources, i listen to what they have to say and i ask the questions and for that i get in trouble. i'm under fire. >> have you been able to develop sources in the white house? >> yes, i have great republican sources, i call them whistle
11:13 am
blowers, they give me good credible information. i mean, i can't be so bad, steve bannon wanted to have 2 hours with me in his home, you know, i had my security with me -- [laughter] >> but i can't be so bad. it's been an interesting ride. they want them to know that they don't like me. sometimes they come to me and sometimes they reach out to me and sometimes they shun me, that's okay, i will be there, i pray that they are gone like i have with others. >> the presidency in black and white was her previous and another one coming? >> another one is coming. 3 books. i'm working -- i'm working on doing reshifting, this was a
11:14 am
very interesting year. this year took a lot out of me, it hurt me because i had to relive it again and out of this book something else is being reborn and looking at the struggles and how people are handling change or trying to make change, so i think there's another book coming. i think there's another book coming very soon. >> paul ryan, thanks for your time on book tv. >> i love book tv, i love book tv. >> keep an eye out for more interviews from the national press clubs book fair to air in near future, you can also watch them and any of our programs in their entirety at booktv.org. type the authors name in the search bar at the top of the page. you're watching book tv on c-span2, television for serious readers. here is tonight's prime time line-up at 6:30 p.m. eastern,
