point. >> -- >> i don't know. [inaudible conversations] [inaudible conversations] [inaudible conversations] >> senior senate staff writer they begin a very busy week before the office recess, holding three votes on whether to override the president vetoes of arms sales to saudi arabia. why did the president veto those
10:41 pm
resolutions? >> the president believes that this is generally speaking and interference i congress in his conduct of foreign policy and also believes the arms sales themselves, specifically our vital for national interest, particularly regarding u.s., saudi relations and security in the middle east and the persian gulf. so the vetoes were to be expected but the congress has been on a bipartisan basis frustrated with the president and his administration handling relations of saudi arabia involvement in the support of the saudi -like campaign in yemen and it was sort of a debate -- we know how i it will

end. but it's an exercise to members of both parties wanted to go. >> we mentioned, a very busy week in the senate and the roll call reflecting that say next week senate will consider a budget deal, confirmed judges into senior officials. who are the two top officials? >> what we are looking for is for the deputy secretary of defense to win confirmation. obviously the secretary of defense was confirmed and took the job last week so now the good from the deputy secretary of defense. the other position that is out there, mcconnell deals as a key position, the u.s. ambassador to the united nations who is trump's nominee for the position, if the current ambassador to canada and

probably importantly as well, because it's mcconnell who set the schedule, she believes in kentucky and she and her husband are major supporters of mcconnell and his political operation. >> also part of that, 19 district judge nominations. why are these priorities for mitch mcconnell and how will they get it done under senate rules? >> the rules make it doable because remember, we only have an allowance in the senate for a couple of hours of debate, once it is invoked in debate is limited on each one. we could see along series of votes on the district judges. but, it's a priority for mcconnell and president trump to fill these vacancies. president trump enjoys the
10:44 pm
record of the number of judges that he is gone confirmed and it's something that mcconnell wants to remake the federal judiciary. i would say there is some chance that there is an agreement to yield back time so there is not a long sequence of votes every couple of hours. because a handful of these nominees are actually people who were selected by democratic senators and recommended president trump a record branded senators. there is a choice based in the chicago area. there are a few others like that. this may not take as long as it appears. >> last year was a two-year budget the a. it's a 324 billion-dollar agreement.
10:45 pm
it passed in the house, two thirds of republicans voting against it. any roadblocks ahead in the senate? >> it does not seemed like there's any actual roadblocks. how many senate republicans will vote for. i would expect the members of the appropriations committee on the republican side will vote for. i imagine most democrats will vote for. there is a possibility of attendance issues on the democratic side because the presidential debate in detroit in the middle of the week. ultimately, i don't think this will be in a complicating factor. as you well know, as viewers would well know, there is a time agreement that is going to be needed, you could see a situation where a senator --
10:46 pm
were standup with the command to get an amendment vote. we may see that happen in the senate, but ultimately this will get through without much troub trouble. >> let me ask you, about september, the headline in cq for appropriation bill now comes the hard part. does this agreement make it much, much easier for those bills to be finished before the end of september? >> it makes it a lot easier. jennifer and i were speaking earlier this week with a lot of the appropriators on both sides of the hill and they are eager to get to work and senator from tennessee told the both of us that he was meeting for dinner with diane feinstein who is a raking democrat on the
10:47 pm
subcommittee. they are eager to get to work and have bills ready to go by the time august recess is done. so for those subcommittee clerks in the senior members of the appropriation committee staff, particularly in the senate there will not be in august recess. i imagine the folks who work in senior roles for senator shelby and senator leahy, if they go to the beach, they better have good internet access. >> we will keep an eye on them. senior senate reporter for roll call. he is on twitter thank you so much for joining the. >> newsmakers, congress with your griefs of louisiana talks about climate issues. he is the ranking republican on the climate crisis committee. he also comments on the mueller
