tv Senate Impeachment Trial Preview CSPAN January 24, 2020 8:54pm-9:36pm EST
5:54 pm
right to a trial. americans get a fair trial and so i ask you, i implore you, you, give america a fair trial. give america a fair trial. she is worth it. thank you. >> the majority leader is recognized. mister chief justice i ask consent the trial adjourn until saturday generate 25th also adjournment of the senate. >> without objection so ordered the senate is adjourned. >> have the democrats made
5:55 pm
their case that wraps up half in the republicans the trumpet defense team will begin tomorrow morning have the democrats made their case? if you cannot get through and want to text two oh 27488003 we will be waiting for reaction from senators tonight we will go to that life but the president just sent out a tweet a really big show tonight i'll be on sean hannity heavy emphasis on the impeachment hoax they know it's a con but just can't sell it the public is strongly against impeachment that's from the president. have the democrats made their
5:56 pm
case independent line. >>caller: yes i do believe a few things i do believe that trump called president zelensky i do believe he asked for disparaging comments in exchange for aid that uk - - ukraine relies on to combat is what we see as an aggressive foreign power into me that is an abuse of power. i don't understand how this is a partisan issue. why do we not want to subpoena to hear what john bolton and it on - - and make mulvaney said. make mulvaney said in a press conference that there was a quid pro quo so i would like to hear what he has to say about this. do we want to know the truth surrounding all of this? because it seems one-sided in favor of finding out the truth and another that just isn't
5:57 pm
and that's the whole thing when i hear republicans talk i hear it's a sham or that it's not a big deal and another point that i heard is that ukraine gave up their nuclear weapons of the dissolution of the ussr and i bet they feel really foolish right now because we are making absolute fools of them. >> are you watching the president's defense team tomorrow 10:00 o'clock a.m.? be my guess i'm interested in what they have to say. but i believe congressman schiff says it's not about process but that it's not a big deal how the democrats deal with this and then to hear that there was this exchange or this conversation.
5:58 pm
that's not what i hear from the republican side so i want to hear all the information. >> now to new york city first of all on the republican line what did you think of congressman schiff's closing arguments? >> >>caller: i think it was a little overdone. he's been known not to tell the truth out on why they made him the manager because everything he has said is been untruthful. so watch the inquiries in the house i was taught in the fifth grade how to abbreviate states. us is abbreviation for the united states when he asked the president of ukraine to do him a favor you would want - -
5:59 pm
we would like you to do us a favor. and these democrats as we have heard many times. >> now patrick from pennsylvania democratic line. >>caller: i think the american people. >> please hold on we have senator langford. >> one of the most remarkable moments of the entire day was when adam schiff said republicans have been told their head will be on the pike if the republicans vote against him. that is completely totally false. where did that story come from and he just kept saying it over and over as if it is true. that's the story of the entire three days of this invented story weaving through with all
6:00 pm
this fiction. and then cap it off to say all these republicans live in fear their head will be on a pike. not true. none of us a been told that by the president or no implication at all perk i was visibly upset that. the whole room was visibly upset that somehow demeaning of everyone that we live in fear the president has threatened us to put her head on a pike perk i don't even understand he comes up with that but it was just another false weird motives and motivations that they weaved wet one - - the last three days. . . . .
6:03 pm
6:04 pm
we know there is fear about him throughout the republican caucus. i want to hear what the president's people have to say tomorrow but i also think this trial has fallen short of being fair. i know when you have a trial you have prosecution, house managers, the defense, the president's lawyers and you have witnesses and documents in the public understands that kim said we had percent of the public says we should have witnesses and documents and this is a bit of a sham trial because they refuse. >> i hope it's not over what when president trump says i want no witnesses. mitch mcconnell's lapdog says i want no witnesses and the 52 other senators who have not shown great courage in the last two years go along with senator mcconnell, you can write the script. >> now billy in pahrump nevada, independent wine, you are on, what you think of adam shifts closing arguments?
6:05 pm
>> i thought it was brilliant. because he hit on a lot of things that he was a preemptive strike on the hypocrisy of the republicans and what can happen over the next three days. i think mr. schiff is a hero and he has stood up for the constitution what we all should be doing. i feel like i've hit the lottery i watched c-span for 40 years is the very first time i've ever gotten through. [laughter] >> what you do in pahrump? >> i'm a disabled retired, just me and my dog. >> thanks for watching and hope you watch another 40 years. up next is marvin in olathe kansas, republican.
6:06 pm
as a republican, do you think the democrats made a strong argument? >> i really don't. i'd like to make two points. one is, the founding fathers were extremely worried someday this might happen. impeachment strictly partisan. that's what this was and i think if for no other reason that this whole thing needs to be dismissed. but the other point i want to make is this. these people have been trying to impeach this present before he was even elected. as far as saying the president did not cooperate. the president actually for almost 2.5 years bent over
6:07 pm
backwards. there was over a million pages of documents that went to the mueller investigation, the next investigation, one of the president's people actually testified for about 30 hours and when this was all done, they wouldn't even admit and say that he's been exonerated. he wasn't charged with anything. so they moved onto the next thing. when this is over it won't be over. as long as these guys are in there, they will continue to go after him. if you look at his record, i don't see how possibly how the people do not put this man in office again. i will say this, i didn't vote for him, and i will tell you why i didn't vote for him. i wasn't in a book for hillary
6:08 pm
there was no way, i just couldn't see having her in there. i thought, what do we got here? we got another billionaire in the white house, things are just going to continue like they always held. but they didn't. he went in there, he did what he said he could do, the country is better, it's getting turned around but he's having a lot of trouble draining the swamp. i think when he gets reelected we will get it drained. >> that's marvin in olathe kansas. senator bob casey of pennsylvania has the house managers wrap up their last day of opening arguments, you will undoubtedly hear from my republican colleagues what they said all week they heard nothing new but remember every one of them voted repeatedly to block new witnesses and documents. j fairhaven massachusetts democrat, as a democrat did your fellow democrats make a
6:09 pm
strong argument? >> i believe he made a strong argument that we need to hear from the actual people in the trump administration. obviously so far we haven't heard any direct firsthand knowledge of republicans are asking for. at the same time, they are also clearly looking at not allowing these people and these documents to be produced. i'd like to address something another caller said earlier that this was a republic, that's false. we are a democratic republic. we are not just one or the other. i think an easy point ãb hearing the people talk on this it seems everyone is so divided. 2015 i deleted all my social media. before the russian thing became real and it was just like a thing, i got out of there because something clearly changed. what was his russians were and other people were intervening
6:10 pm
in social media and they still are to this day. they don't want one to when they don't want another to win, they just want this ã >> that was j in fairhaven massachusetts, now up is dying in waterloo wisconsin independent line. give us your assessment brian. >> i been watching this from the very beginning, i sat there and watched adam schiff turn down everything that republicans wanted to do. they wanted to call witnesses, the president would have came in he can even bring his lawyer. the cut those guys off so bad so they could get this over with.it's a joke. now they want to come up the house of representatives and call witnesses now.it's too late. they had their chances, why didn't they do it? then they hang onto it for how many days before they send it over? that didn't work either. adam schiff sits there and talks about stuff that doesn't have anything to do about his dad being in a war, who cares?
6:11 pm
they are running out of stuff so fast. it's the same tape over and over again. if they don't have anything new what we doing? >> that's brian and wisconsin and this is lisa in cary north carolina republican, hi lisa. >> how are you doing? i just want to say that i didn't hear any kind of evidence that was impeachable. all i heard was the same thing over and over again, just kind of eloquently changed the words. a lot of hearsay. no tangible evidence on the democratic side. i cannot wait for the presidents managers to get up and present their case because i think we are going to find that the corruption was not on the trump side.
6:12 pm
it's on the biting side and that's why he did not want to get involved with this because it was a whole partisan. it was one-sided. i agree with the last collar, they should have had all their ducks in a row before they brought it to the senate and they didn't. and it's not the senate's job to call witnesses. >> that was lisa in cary north carolina. ãbsenator lisa murkowski just told us that adam schiff overreached tonight. she said he is a good order, cross the line at the end of the night. she said she hasn't decided whether to support witnesses and will wait until president trumps lawyers make their case. we will hear from charlotte, a democrat in kids texas. do you agree that adam schiff overreached tonight, charlotte? >> of course i don't. that's ridiculous. that's just another example of
6:13 pm
murkowski beginning with this statement that she wants to hear witnesses or she's considering it but not backing it up with her vote. her and cohen's and the others i'm hoping they come through. i'm disgusted by republicans talking about being bored and and not doing their duty. 70% of americans want witnesses. it's my understanding, 70% of republicans want witnesses. so who are these representatives representing? >> let's go back to the house, why do you think the house did not follow through and get witnesses? >> that's pretty simple, isn't it? they were obstructed. people talk about mueller as this thing that kind of fell
6:14 pm
through. there were 10 instances of obstruction in that mueller report. in every witness they asked for, every document they asked for, it wasn't given. fighting that to the courts could have been two or three years. the whole point of this impeachment is messing with our election. we got an election coming up. >> that was charlotte in texas and this is sam in las vegas. independent line. >> how are you today? >> how are you. >> and doing well. i've been watching closely the presentation and my thoughts are, for one, when the senators had to go and take their oath and you watch senator graham
6:15 pm
and senator mcconnell come right out on tv and say, i am not going to be fair about this. i am biased. yet they have to take an oath. it almost sounds pretty hypocritical to me.i would think would most americans come out and tell you what they think. if they are the leadership, the senate, the judiciary and the head of the senate, if you are thinking you are going to get legislation passed, i suspect where leadership goes if you don't follow then you will probably a senator who's probably not going to accomplish much.that's my first thought. my second thought is kim my dad always said, you are known by the company you keep. you look at manifort, cohen, general flynn, stalin, all these characters going to jail, in jail or in that direction and these are your president's closest confidantes, that kind of is a reflection of the
6:16 pm
person as well. and finally, the president says he's going to appear on sean hannity and in entertainment it's not like he's gonna go visit with jim layer. someone who's of my generation. and someone who separated fax from opinion. >> over the last three days you think democrats made a strong case?>> i believe they did. for the amount of witnesses that in spite of the direction from the white house bravely appeared. these are people when you are somebody like sondland who gave the million dollars for the president's campaign you can't say he's a never-trumper. all the folks there were there because trump appointed them. >> are you going to be watching the other side when the trump
6:17 pm
defense team starts tomorrow? >> i'm going to probably not be watching it as closely. i've been hearing a lot of attorneys in the president's defense when i see them starting out-of-the-box saying this is false it's not true and then you watch the people who actually were there, witnesses who bravely give their testimony and to discount it and say it's false it's not true. these folks made it up, they're not that close to the president they couldn't possibly know what the president was thinking. it gives you a lot of reservation. >> and thanks for spending a few minutes with us tonight. paul in va texting ãb adam schiff stated that in
6:18 pm
close the first day of actual trial. he can't get through on the phone lines you can send a text that number will be on the screen. roberto, alamogordo new mexico republican. i roberto. >> hi. i do agree with lisa murkowski, he did well with regard to orientating his point of view. i think his weakness is exactly where he was very poignant with regard to where he knows donald trump's defense is going to go which is with regard to the fact that they did not go to the courts. he said essentially that it would be a quagmire and they have to go through the appeals process which would delay the process, therefore, they wouldn't see genesis prior to the election. but that is essentially the
6:19 pm
american system. for him not to go through that as an investigator because although people say they were essentially the, you would consider the ãbprior to trial, the grand jury, that was active vote of the house. essentially that was good to be biased but with regards to an investigation and the evidence, he should've essentially waited, gone to the courts, and fought it. of course it may not have made it prior to election itself to calling the president a threat there essentially saying we cannot wait therefore we have to put forward the evidence we have, take it the grand jury, which was the full house which is 435, when he made the argument of 100 individuals being in the private meetings, that's only 25%, less than 25%,
6:20 pm
435 representatives. he wasn't like it was a substantial number. for those who do not know how television they would representatives that were represented. they got equal time, although the evidence they want to bring forward in the senate, he should have bought it because the president argued executive privilege and so adam schiff as well as representative nadler knew they would have to take it to the courts. >> roberto, thank you for calling in. andrew in the pew in new york, democrat, do you think the democrats made a good case? >> if anybody's been paying attention since the inquiry began with ãbthey haven't made a lot more headway.
6:21 pm
i feel as far as the argument, it's been as strong as it's ever been. the main problem is that a lot of republicans now live under this whole fake news rhetoric and a lot of the facts and everything democrats come up with can be the way with fake news from the trump administration. a lot of people don't want to listen to fact. >> what did you think of adam schiff, closing arguments? >> i thought it was funny he started with the quote about being immortal without being eternal and then talk for so long but one of the main points i really liked out of his closing argument was that republicans are going to have to stand up against their own party and it's going to be one of the hardest and bravest moments of their career. it could be political suicide. i don't know if trump actually said they'd be putting their heads on pikes but i can understand what schiff meant by
6:22 pm
it. >> diana is in ohio. she texts in. this is all about the 2020 election and not impeachment, as they know they cannot beat trump at the ballot. schiff and the rest of the house managers have misspoken several times as well as misrepresent the facts. this is completely partisan and has been since november 2016. don't need any new witnesses as they say they have presented overwhelmingly already. steve in arlington vermont as an independent, what you think, first of all, the first three days? you can watch the next three days? >> i watched when i could come of the proceedings and am going to check in for the next three days to see what the republicans have to say. it's been very interesting. i am happy that c-span is available for everyone to see exactly what's going on without
6:23 pm
any spin because every other news organization has their spin they put on things. you guys do a great job. >> that stephen arlington vermont. that no republican had been told that, referring to the cbs report, here is what congressman schiff had to say. >> cbs news reported last night that a trump confidant said that gop senators were warned vote against your president, voted against the president and your head will be on a pike. i don't know if that's true vote against the president and your head will be on a pike. i have to say, when i read
6:24 pm
that, and i don't know if that's true but when i read that i was struck by the irony, by the irony, i hope it's not true. i was struck by the irony by the idea when were talking about a president who would make himself a monarch that whoever that was would use the terminology of a penalty that was opposed by a monarch. a head on a pike. >> senator tina smith, democrat, minnesota, tomorrow the president's counsel will take up the presentation i will let you know my impressions in the meantime, thinking of questions i want answers to and i continue to hope we will hear from witnesses and see documents that will allow us to know the truth, which is our right and of course the defense begins at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow
6:25 pm
morning. that begins their 24 hour shot clock over three days so you can expect monday and tuesday as well and then we go into the 16 hour of senators being able to ask questions of both the house managers and the trump defense team, after that for our debate and vote on whether more witnesses and documents are necessary. craig in and atwater california, republican, go ahead greg. >> how are you doing? >> how are you? >> am doing fine. i watched the whole thing and then i watched the beginning with the house when they brought over the articles of impeachment. personally i think having the first part of it the democrats put on a real good show but most of it i felt could not be
6:26 pm
seen as true because mike collins who were able to rebut some of the things they were saying on the questions you may ask them the questions to break down the narrative.i will see how they could bring it to the senate. although now that it's in the senate i think that schiff, nadler and pelosi who orchestrated this due to hide his service to our country. i'm retired military. what i mean by that, if they were going to have something like this with no crime, this should have been done behind closed doors. they are airing out disagreements about national security policy before the whole world. and this is really demoralizing
6:27 pm
other countries and the american people. >> rita, quorum new york, democrat. >> hi. it's really disheartening that that people don't see the forest through the trees. in other words, undemocratic line he is ãbhe's the democratic party is putting the facts out there. they are laying it down and we expect, unfortunately, that the republican party is going to come back and hip blows. they are going to try to pull everything out. it's like when your mother scolds you for being bad and
6:28 pm
you come back as a child but "i didn't do it" "there was a reason for it" but come about, but, they are reaching the republican party is going to reach. why can't we say, evidence, ã >> rita, will you be watching the 24 hours a the trump defense team? >> absolutely. that's rita in quorum new york, senator rubio florida, house managers focus bulk of day primarily on evidence of obstruction of justice they then offered closing arguments including preemptive responses to presidents defenses. presidents lawyers begin their presentation tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. and that will be live a course on c-span2 preempting
6:29 pm
part of our booktv coverage which is every weekend. the next call is laura in tulsa, independent line. >> thank you. i consider myself a moderate but over my lifetime i worked for and voted for democrats, independents and even some republicans. i have disagreements with both sides of the spectrum and the parties of democrats and republicans. i think the democrats ãbthe house did a good job as best they could seeing how they were obstructed by the president from getting documents that were needed and witnesses in order to prove their case. taking what they had and going into this, that was a hearing, going into the trial and hoping to get these needed parts of
6:30 pm
evidence is only logical. for the sonnets already put up a wall and they didn't come right out and say it but it was very obvious and obvious from the body language and comments in between the sessions where people were talking that they have their minds made up. this is the problem i think today, people are not open-minded and is very disheartening to listen to childish, immature, arguments and name-calling. where are the people, the deck habits of the world and the william buckley's, who used to have thoughtful shows on where we could discuss issues and really take care of our country. disturbed and are told by senator lankford numerous times
6:31 pm
that i expect him to protect our country that he is there to represent all of the people, not just republicans. he's very good about responding but mr. inhof, forget it. >> lori, would you do in tulsa? >> am a retired teacher. >> thank you for calling in. thank you for watching. senator duckworth, democrat, illinois, i took an oath to remain an impartial juror and intend to do just that. i remain open to the possibility that trumps lawyers will present an equally persuasive case in his defense". darrell is up next. darrell is from shepherdsville kentucky, republican. >>. >> i've been watching this this impeachment here. i've been watching it, last
6:32 pm
year, these democrats have just a witch hunt here on president trump. they had no witnesses at all and adam schiff is making up a whistleblower, if he doesn't have a whistleblower, who is this person? who is it? they're bringing some of these witnesses from ukraine and made up a story made up a conversation from ukraine president of ukraine and donald trump made a phone call and adam schiff changed the word what he said on that phone call.>> that was darrell in kentucky and this is velvet in burnsville west virginia, democrats. >> i'm a democrat, soon to be going independent due to the democratic house of representatives and using the claim that they had
6:33 pm
overwhelming evidence that trump was guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors. i find this obstructing not only to donald trump but as america to the american citizens. they are televising it, which is a good thing. televising it but they are obstructing him to america. >> velvet, you did not hear overwhelming evidence is that correct? >> no i did not. >> thank you for calling in. tom is in east brunswick new jersey and he's an independent, tom, you're gonna be our last word tonight. >> i have a little different opinion here. i hear so many people, whether congressmen, the callers, that keep calling us america. are we not united states?
6:34 pm
is america a continent, a piece of land, a piece of dirt? >> what's the significance of that argument? >> when the congressman says that america should be understanding what's going on. why do people in venezuela care about what's going on in the united states? >> that's tom in east brunswick new jersey. we are going to continue to get your reaction beginning with the washington journal at 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. then at 10:00 a.m. on c-span2 the trump defense team kicks off their defense and that begins at 10:00 a.m. on c-span2 preempting part of booktv, this will all be live. those are opening arguments tomorrow.
6:35 pm
