tv   Senate Impeachment Trial Reaction  CSPAN  January 27, 2020 9:03pm-9:49pm EST

9:03 pm
9:04 pm
i went to the prescott rally in
9:05 pm
16 and it was great. it was sold out. people were outside and i went home excited and i got a different view on tv that it was a bunch of white guys, which it wasn't, and there was a destruction which there wasn't. since he became president, i mean, if he does something good like prison reform, unemployment numbers and i will put on cnn is about russia and stormy daniels and attorney is going to be the next president so i just can't trust either side. >> host: what you are looking at is, by the way, the courtyard, main entrance into the u.s. senate and staffers are picking up those senators who decided not to walk or take the subway from the u.s. capitol to their offices, heading home for the evening. by the way, all the coverage is available on our website@c-span
9:06 pm
.org and there are a number of tweets referring to multiple gop sources indicating that there may be enough votes potentially, 51 votes, for the first vote on witnesses whether to consider the idea of witnesses but so far not enough votes on specific witnesses and shannon says alan dershowitz addressing the elephant in the room saying the recorded john bolton accusation, if true, quote, would not rise to level an and abuse of power or impeachable offense. we heard from alan dershowitz and can start earlier today. famous from the bill clinton investigation and here is a number of other senators including mitt romney, a key vote if there are witnesses leaving the floor of the u.s. senate. albini, ohio, democrat line, good evening. >> caller: hello. i just want to say i think it's very strange while all these [inaudible] have a completely different view from the clinton
9:07 pm
trial [inaudible] this president has lied time after time after time. >> host: at senator mitch mcconnell who is the rebellion leader in the u.s. senate and is calling many of the shots in this trial as he leaves the senate chamber and heading back to his office in the u.s. capitol. by the way, we feature him in his interview with senator lamar alexander and it aired yesterday on the tv. 2016 interview, if you want to check it out where he talks about his role as a senate leader and how he views the senate as an institution it's available online at c-span .org, part of our book tv "after words" programming. barbara is next from kentucky, a republican line, your home state senator. good evening, barbara. >> caller: yes, hi. i'm calling because one, i support c-span and prefer to listen without the comments but
9:08 pm
obviously we hear them from viewers and i appreciate that but i think it is so telling when the different people from different parties, senators for instance, we had mark meadows and ted cruz and others come down and the reporters and the so-called reporters, journalists, whatever they want to call themselves, the hatemongers, or just acting like a bunch of rabid dogs. i hate to disparage dogs but they were outrageous in their rude behavior. however, when adam schiff came on he was in not interrupted and he just went on with his views. i think that is so telling that, for instance, the democrat listener who was on the air just one minute ago she was a saint we all know that this president lies. well, you know that or you thank you know that because of all the extreme bias in the mainstream media and that is why i listen
9:09 pm
to c-span but i would prefer that you not air the text from the different mainstream news sources like cnn and places like that. i don't care to hear their biased opinions. so, that is my comments but i also do not think we should -- there is a case for having other witnesses. they house had that opportunity. they were totally unfair to the republican and this president. his due process rights were just stomped on. it was just outrageous. and now they are coming in and demanding we need witnesses and we need this and that and it is or it was their duty to go to the court if they were going to hear bolton. if dershowitz just reported that he made the case that what bolton is claiming that it does
9:10 pm
not rise to an impeachable offense. under the clinton trials he was afforded so many opportunities and the press was -- they were fawning all over him and now we have a total opposite for president trump to accomplish all he has done is truly a miracle. it gives him credit for rising above the muck of the swamp. >> host: barbara, i understand your point about not wanting to hear the tweets from may be "the new york times" or cnn but don't you think it's important to understand what they are saying in context of what may be fox news or other news outlets are saying? that is what we try to do here is to provide context and let you know what other people are saying and writing editorials and then make up your own mind. >> caller: they are saying because we hear them thrown at us and nausea him 247, the
9:11 pm
grammys had, what her name out there trashing the presidents, everything 247. i turn on television last night and saw some cartoon figure mocking the president and it's just outrageous. i go to a bookstore and see so-called kids book mocking the president and i'm a teacher and you know, i have taught government and taught history and taught children of all ages. i know that this is just a mockery of our country. it is undermining our president but more importantly it is undermining our country. >> host: barbara, other people want to weigh in. we appreciate your thoughts. we go to alexis, line four independents in wilmington, north carolina. thank you for waiting. >> caller: hello. hello. can you hear me? >> host: we sure can.
9:12 pm
>> caller: i did not want to comment or interrupt the last caller but i grew up saying the pledge of allegiance in northern illinois 20 minutes from wisconsin border and i'm african-american and 71 years old and when i said the pledge of allegiance with other white kids and black kids that we got along. ... >> was trying to steal the boat and when i say our vote i mean we as americans.
9:13 pm
>> host: formerly with cnbc, now that the defense team has used the impeachment trial to target the bidens and ukraine remember the sworn testimony acting to protect his son's business, none whatsoever. did joe biden personal interest of the u.s.? key data. a tweet from john harwood. let's go to steve in anaheim california on the republican line. good evening. >> caller: good evening. at least this didn't go until 1:00 in the morning. i'm going to go a different direction. next time you have somebody like kimberly wells or jonathan ronstein, i hope i'm saying that correct -- or any of the constitutional experts that you had on in november, i'd like you to ask them this one question which has been bothering me. if donald trump's lawyer is
9:14 pm
paying him, how is it possible that it's under the client attorney privilege, and how is that executive privilege? that's basically all i want to know if you can get one of your experts on and ask them that question. >> host: thank you for the call. the president here in washington met with the israeli president benjamin nathaniel hill in the oval office -- benjamin netanyahu. they had a number of national elections but still unclear who will be the next prime minister. benjamin netanyahu remains and this is what it looked like earlier in the oval office. people go to ken on the independence line. >> caller: i just had a couple of statements. the primary reason everybody is
9:15 pm
interested in this trial in the abuse of power if he were in charge and the president, how would you handle the almost $400 million in congressionally approved taxpayer is going to a country that has had the status of being the most corrupt country in the world. what would you do com, and thene obstruction of congress. should privilege be granted to a president and his inner circle of people and how they would handle certain situations. i'm sure there's a lot of foul language and animus. no matter what they said behind closed doors, should they be solicited from his inner circle?
9:16 pm
>> host: did you watch alan dershowitz bolton remarks on the senate floor earlier in the day? >> caller: i did. it made sense. i didn't -- it's tearing the country apart, for what? for losing in election? it doesn't make sense to go through this. >> host: you are looking at on the other screen is what it looks like on the other side of the senate floor. there are a handful of reporters trying to get information. the big question tonight is whether or not the senate republicans would vote for witnesses. we are getting indication that at least two senators, mitt romney and susan collins are inclined to support with mrs.. also a story from robert costa from the post indicatin indicatt toomey, republican of pennsylvania, would support the
9:17 pm
idea of one for one of the democrats getting a witness and republicans getting a witness in after the testimony today, many republicans potentially vying for hunter biden to be the witness. former vice president joe biden said he would have nothing to do with that but this is an investigation on donald trump and not into the bidens. campaign coverage continues. we are a week away from the iowa caucuses on february 3 coming up tomorrow morning by the way, tom steyer will be the guest at 9 a.m. eastern time from des moines iowa. mark from latham, new york. democrats line. >> caller: good evening. i just have to tell you i have been watching this on both sides and it's purely i believe the house has messed this up big time. anyone watching this over the course of the last two years, regardless of what network coming and we try to watch you
9:18 pm
because you stay where you belong as far as honesty and integrity, that it prevents politics. they want to overturn the results of the 2016 e. election. it's been playing since the get go. the liver to the standards to impeachment, and i feel -- and this is true of many moderate democrats in the country -- they've made a door open for losing the house in 2020 and they've given this president and many moderate democrat votes because common sense and 2020 vision can tell you this is politics pure and simple. it's hypocritical on the democrats approach i hate to say that, that is what it is and i think they are going to pay the price when they look at their political futures personally down the road.
9:19 pm
because they think it is going to come back to haunt them. >> host: that was alan dershowitz that he was al you sa moment ago. the black suv pulling up as they leave the senate for the night returning tomorrow at 1:00. by the way the final day for the president defense lawyers to mount their arguments and that will be up to 16 hours of questions divided equally and to pose questions in the form that would be read by the chief justice of the united states who by the way is a 65-years-old today. it was a moment as the proceedings begin. we will share that with you in a moment. first mark your text messages. this is mike from ohio who calls himself independent and on the text message he says, quote, the entire impeachment process has made a mockery out of the system, the house representatives in the evidence to justify the articles coming aarticles comingyet to find them
9:20 pm
to the senate. the articles should have been thrown out as soon as they go to the senate. this is pam in tennessee. today's testimony has only proven that hunter biden and vice president joe biden are the only ones left on trial. that should be left to the justice department. the transcript can be falsified and any of the proceedings that i have watched there has been no actual evidence from either side. (202)748-8903 is where you can send him a text message, just half while you are driving. tell us your first name and where you are texting from. laura from bakersfield. republican line. good evening. >> caller: thank you very much. we appreciate it. protecting the information into the news. when my wife and i became american citizens back in 1995, we came from india and we were
9:21 pm
democrats and i lean towards what is more of the republican side because seeing the democrats move to the far left i always make my judgment based on the facts lost on what the media tells the entity i see a lot of people including my friends so influenced by the media and i certainly feel today the country is divided big time and it's sad what has happened. i wasn't a big fan of trump. i followed him since i came into this country and i'm looking at what he's actually doing. people are calling him a liar and a racist and divisive and well-founded. look at what he's doing. that is what i base every single president and what they are doing for the country, but this is a sad day in the united states to see what is happening
9:22 pm
to the country, and i hope this impeachment comes to a close and allowing president of trump to run the way that it should be done. >> host: let's go to la and in newport, kentucky. democrats line. >> caller: hello, how are you doing? >> host: fine, thank you. >> caller: a couple of things, i've been a lifelong democrat from 63-years-old. i've never thought of the party for the people will turn constitutionally upside down. guilty until proven innocent, that isn't the way it works. the same way here with the impeachment. they've had meetings in the basement of the capitol, the most beautiful justice center of the world, and he's having meetings in the basement where he controls everything. in fact, he still has the
9:23 pm
testimony of the general and won't release that because it proves that trump is innocent. >> host: we are keeping an eye on the senators including lindsey graham with this tweet early on. it would have been wrong for president trump to not be wrong about the bidens business deals in ukraine after what we heard this afternoon from the president's defense team. the question is whether or not john bolton would testify, in light of the book published yesterday online at nytimes.com, front page today's newspaper. he indicated that if he is subpoenaed to testify he would do so. cnn, and this posting from the hill.com with senator mitt romney. >> i can't begin to tell you how john bolton's testimony would play on the final decision, but it's relevant and therefore i'd
9:24 pm
like to hear it. and what impact that might have would be dependent upon all the facts associated with it. we hear from the prosecution and defense asked what was relevant and what was said and how that would influence the final vote but i can't begin to tell you how that would be resolved. as i've indicated, i have seen myself as a juror and in that capacity i will maintain impartiality to the extent i can. >> host: next question that is l newspaper. we look at the capitol from this monday evening. mark joining from minnesota on the republican line. good evening. >> caller: payday or, good evening. i've heard a lot of comments about c-span being unbiased. i totally agree with that and thank you for bringing this coverage to us. i am a lifelong republican, and i remember the days of nixon and clinton and now unfortunately,
9:25 pm
trump. i remember being raised that if your party wasn't elected, you supported was put in office. it's like nowadays, it's so divided in the country, and for me it's shameful. i believe alan dershowitz nailed it today or tonight. i really appreciated what he had to say and he explained it very well. >> host: think you b thank you , alan dershowitz is on the journal of weeks ago if you want to check out the interview on c-span.org. the democrats are accusing nearly all of the 24 hours over three days. on saturday the republican defense team using only two hours. here's a look at the final tally in terms of how much time has been used this far. eight hours and 27 minutes for the republicans for the president and his defense lawyers, being that they have 15
9:26 pm
hours and 33 minutes remaining. although the indicated that the very start of the proceedings that they wouldn't use all of their time. again they are back tomorrow at 1:00 in the afternoon eastern time. i want to spend a moment to share one other political story that is playing out is going to make this year interesting in georgia politics. this is a tweet saying really chill primary developing in georgia for a couple of sources including john grisha. expected to run for the senate. kelly is the incumbent senator appointed by the governor, but collins who is the ranking republican on the house judiciary committee expected to set up a primary challenge in the race. this is an open seat to fill the seat left vacant with johnny isakson who stepped down at the end of last year for health reasons and it would be to complete the next two years of
9:27 pm
the term "-begin-double-quote, congressman doug collins expected to run for the senate in georgia a primary challenge for the new development tonight in campaign 2020. back to your phone calls let's go to regis in delaware back to the senate impeachment trial. >> caller: i want to focus on one part of that. my comment is on the process that has been discussed through the proceedings and that is about calling witnesses at this late stage. i doubt most americans have never sat in the u.s. supreme court hearing, and i have. and there they are not witnesses. it's a song or hearing. the two sides present the page without witnesses. the work has begun before the court is assembled. so i believe that is what we should be focusing on from a straightforward process without drawing distractions, no witnesses needed at this stage. i could speak longer but i wish to reserve the balance of my time to the next caller.
9:28 pm
>> host: we appreciate that. thank you, you've made our night. joann in california. what are republicans afraid of? why are they stopping evidence from coming before the senate? cb is joining in orlando, florida on the republican line. good evening. >> caller: i've been a republican for 42 years and i've ever been so ashamed of this party in my whole entire life. i don't think that many people understand the constitution and maybe haven't read it and never read the federalist papers, that trump definitely violated the law and the gao proved that. if you are not allowed to go to a foreign country and have them interfere in our election, i don't believe it was about corruption, because if we were worried about joe biden being corrupt and we have a mechanism to take care of that in our own justice department. why would you ask a corrupt country to investigate him. i think it was definitely on his
9:29 pm
personal benefit. i've never, ever heard of a court having no witnesses were testimony and by him refusing to, what other defendant gets to see or pick no, you don't get to have any evidence or witnesses. there is no other defendant that does that. innocent people do not hide weaknesses and they do not hide a testimony. >> host: let me jump and come if we do get to the witnesses and democrats say we want john bolton and the republicans say we want hunter biden, what do you think of that? >> caller: i don't think hunter biden has anything to do with this. if the justice department thinks that hunter biden has been involved in some kind of broken any kind of laws of any kind of corruption, then i think our justice department needs to investigate that. a lot of people are making comments about how much he made hiin saying he's not qualified. he is a legal consultant.
9:30 pm
people would be amazed at how much people like that make. i worked for the department for 25 years and i now work in the house bill's administration. there are hospital ceos to make more than what hunter biden made, but there's a valid reason we have our united states government to investigate. we do not have a corrupt country investigating it. >> host: i will leave it there. thanks for the call. i want to go back to the story we talked about earlier from robert costa of the "washington post" indicating senator pat toomey, republican from pennsylvania, imposing a one-on-one with a steal i the se trump impeachment trial into the list that are considering witnesses more from the trial earlier this evening and that speech by alan dershowitz who has written extensively on the case of impeachment and he wrote a book on it as well. the members of the senate as
9:31 pm
well as the house impeachment managers earlier tonight. >> the clai claim about the foreign-policy decisions can be deemed abuse of power based on subjective opinions about mixed or sole motive for the president was interested only in helping himself demonstrate the dangers of employing the vague phrase abuse of power is a constitutionally permissible criteria for the removal of a president. now it follows, it follows from this that if a president, any president, were to have done what the times reported about the contact of the bolton manuscript, that would not constitute an impeachable offense. let me repeat, nothing in the bolton revelations, even if true, would rise to the level of an abuse of power or in impeachable offense. that is clear from the history and that is clear from the
9:32 pm
language of the constitution. you cannot turn conduct that is not impeachable into impeachable conduct simply by using words like quid pro quo and personal benefit. >> host: that is from alan dershowitz. we are live back in washington, d.c., 932 in the evening. coles, comment, reaction to what you heard from the president's defense lawyers mounting a defense against the impeachment of president trump and some reaction from senators leaving this evening. cnn, who was able to check in with senator joe manchin, democrat of west virginia, told me the trump defense team has done a good job saying alan dershowitz was good and they gave a whole different perspective. that's what trials are about. and this is a text message from stephen messages. sounds to me the republicans are saying it's okay for one president to investigate the prior administration. what goes around comes around. dante is the joining from dover
9:33 pm
>> caller: i think everybody needs to pull it together because it isn't about being democrat or republican anymore. and this is the main reason why my -- if you can see something so black-and-white, then what is the point in having this whole picture? because an america where i come from, it's just so special where if we see something or if we know something, then that is something. we need to just put it together. we need to put it together because what i just saw tonight is i don't know why people seem bored of it. we need to put more ingenuity into this because it shouldn't have even been this. what is the point of impeachment of the president isn't defending our country? he's sending people in the wrong
9:34 pm
direction. the global warming happening, we don't even know what is the rest -- what is the true story? and i'm hearing from the rest calling in and talking and they just sound like they are full of themselves. i'm so selfish that i would rather just throw away paper, but then i don't know what else to do with it. do we recycle it, do we bring it back? this is what we all need to pay attention to in this whole proceeding between this impeachment and what's going on in life is the government and fbi and who is really funding. >> host: thanks for the call. senator murphy says he has no interest in a witness trade after the trump lawyers went after biden today saying i refuse to be part of the same conspiracy that is a subject of this impeachment. that is from the senator murphy of connecticut. marion is joining us from lafayette indiana, republican line. go ahead, please.
9:35 pm
>> caller: yes, i was very pleased tonight that they outlined the constitution and what it constitutes to impeach a president. i feel that the way the democratic party and the house have conducted bringing this together for an impeachment, there are illegal ways they are bypassing the constitution and the guidelines to impeach a president has been entirely wrong. i do not feel that anymore witnesses or anybody needs to be called in for this and how they conducted the business was wrong. this should have never been started in the first place. >> host: thanks for the call. this is another tweet from cnn saying that after alan dershowitz argument was convincing to her, this from the
9:36 pm
republican leader lisa murkowski another vote with your mother would be witnesses in playing. i thought that alan dershowitz was good. janet in detroit michigan. democrats line. >> caller: yes, i am concerned everyone is looking at the media and now the book from bolton is out. think about what's been going on from when they first had the witnesses come and speak on national tv and what they found out and what the it would be wid what they heard, which was truly impeachable. donald trump tweets about everything else but he never tweeted to let us know he was withholding funds from ukraine. he never let anybody know that. he takes everything he does in the white house, but that's coming he never let us know.
9:37 pm
transparency is what is missing in this administration, and that is a big problem. thank you. >> host: thank you. the fox news channel who covers capitol hill extensively for fox news, a former c-span employee and friend of the network has this from colleague sally pearson and notes that senators are leaving the capital at a decent hour tonight as for the second day a presentation from the in donald trump's impeachment trial. again this is a day in which "the new york times" writing details on john bolton's book which will be officially released on march 17, that from simon and schuster announced earlier today on amazon and excerpts of the book first yesterday online at "the new york times" website on page today and whether or not he would be a key witness. the issue is whether republicans would vote in favor. palm is joining us from new jersey on the republican line. how much of today and tonight did you watch?
9:38 pm
>> caller: i have been watching it in spurts. a lot is on my mind. i know trump from brooklyn and never expected him to be president. i'm a little bit upset that he didn't get a day to become president. he's been under fire from time he got elected. to clean up a slump that has been for 50, 60 years is a rough gig. with mueller -- if trump ever faces biden come he has dementia of some sort -- same thing happened to mueller. he didn't really know what happened the day before and they hated it for months. i think that pelosi, and a few others shouldn't be allowed to be in the house anymore or
9:39 pm
shouldn't be in washington. they are not going to give up if they lose this. the only thing it does is brings down our country and a lot of people including soldiers that are fighting for our country are losing their lives, not seeing their children, their families, fighting for our country come into our countrand our country g for -- the only one fighting for them is president of trump. i don't see any other people, pelosi, schumer even talking about that. and trump if he ties his shoe laces won't come it's going to be all over the media, it's in the "washington post," it's in "the new york times." i used to get the time times evy sunday and treasure it. i could spit on it now. >> host: thanks for the call from new jersey. we have the hill newspaper. with this as we said during the
9:40 pm
course of the trial it is very restrictive for reporters to follow the senators, and she makes this point is 9:14 in the evening the senate staff physically blocking reporters from walking and talking with senators as they leave the building for the day a hard contrast from last week when we walked out with senators collins, oleksander, etc. to get their thoughts, calling it, quote, examples of the rules being changed on a whim. there was one moment, in case you missed it earlier today, the chief justicchief justice of thd states celebrating his birthday. he's 65-years-old and here is what happened. >> the majority leader is recognized. as the chaplain indicated on behalf of all of us come happy birthday. i'm sure this is exactly how you planned to celebrate the day. [laughter] [laughter] >> thank you for the kind wishes and thank you to all the senators for not asking for the yeas and nays. [laughter] >> host: a moment of levity
9:41 pm
for the chief justice as he celebrates a very long day into the evening as the presiding judge of this impeachment trial, the third time in history a sitting president has faced such a trial. sean is joining us from deer park new york. democrats whine. good evening. >> caller: i just want to say i'm proud of my country and as a registered democrat i'm kind of disappointed in the way the democrats are going. this has been an ongoing saga. they said we ar were going to impeach donald trump when he was elected president, duly elected as well. so it's not an isolated incident. maxine waters the other day said no matter what happens here, we will not stop. we are going to seek to get him out. adam schiff basically impeached john bolton the other day in the closing arguments and saying that even if we do get john bolton to testify, at that point, john bolton has a book
9:42 pm
coming out. how can we give any credibility to what he's saying. so at that point, if mr. bolton doesn't testify to what mr. adam schiff wants him he's going to want to impeach him for lack of a better word as he has done to sondland and all the other star witnesses who said there was nothing. and as this has gone on for anything that has been brought forth as far as the attorneys bringing forth charges and any of the books that come out, nothing has come from this. so, all of the democrats in the clinton impeachment projects were exactly saying why we shouldn't do this. i really think we need to put this to bed. it needs to be -- i don't think there really is the need for witnesses. people that are attacking the constitution and knowing jurisprudence" judicial system works should know how the process works and what does not
9:43 pm
end if it is a civil or criminal trial, the rules are a little different. they should know that you present your case. you don't, and when asked the jury to hunt for witnesses for you. look what this gentleman has done in three years with no support from the democrats. can they imagine where we would be had they supported him and where this country would be? i know hillary said what you support me if i'm elected and he said we will see. they have done nothing, nothing to support this president. >> host: the one third exception is democrats didn't support the usmc overwhelmingly and the president is going to find out later on this week. >> caller: right, but also in regards to that from anything he's done on a positive note, on that day to make sure that they have had negative publicity. the other day when he presented the china deal, that is when they worked the articles over. they don't give him anything.
9:44 pm
this is personal and if they want to understand that what he did is not -- i do not consider attacking or going after the election. the democrats are doing the same thing. adam schiff just sat there and has given testimony that we cannot have this man around. they've lost. they've dropped the ball. they can't beat him and they know that. the only way to get him out is to get him not elected every >> host: this is a headline that has generated so much attention. the reporting of maggie and schmidt from th the times, the e of the ukraine aid to the inquiry, then that from john bolton which again is officially released arch 17. tom in north hills california, independent-minded evening. >> caller: i've watched all this time now but my hat goes off to pam bondi and the
9:45 pm
following attorney had been alan dershowitz following them all up with the constitution. this is just a joke. and one little bone i have to pick with c-span, does c-span get paid not to have their cameras in there or how does that work out where they didn't want us, the american people, to see how lazy i'm how many times they were walking out and not paying attention, sleeping -- how does that come about, if i might ask? >> host: i can answer for you. the senate, first you have to go back to 1979 when the house agreed to television and the chamber. the deal was the house would control those cameras. the senate has the same agreement. we did put a request for our cameras for the trial because of the historical nature of what was about to unfold, and that was denied. one of the few exceptions were you can see cameras in the house
9:46 pm
and senate chamber during the state of the union which by the way is next tuesday evening. the networks are allowed to have cameras to follow in and out of the house chamber but by and large, even in the senate documentary, we have a lot of restrictions in terms of what we could and could not shoot and that was for a documentary. we did try at the request in and we very much would like to have our cameras both in the house and the senate, that is continually denied by the senate leaders or house leaders respectively. >> caller: [inaudible] i sure am, steve. >> host: that's the answer. we are going to move on. did you have a final point? >> caller: enjoy c-span. >> host: we would like to have cameras in the court as well. that's another story. a reminder we are back tomorrow morning 7 a.m. eastern with c-span washington journal and we will get your reaction to the number two of the president's defense lawyers tomorrow morning
9:47 pm
7 a.m.. also, we will be joined by tom steyer from des moines, iowa. the senate is back in session at 1 p.m. tomorrow afternoon. we will have that live on c-span2, the president back on the campaign trail. he's in wildwood, new jersey. you can watch the rally on c-span and on the web c-span.org or the free c-span radio app that gets him her way 7 p.m. eastern on c-span3. a view of the u.s. capitol on this monday evening and opening arguments in the senate and peach mint trial -- impeachment trial. this is the first time we heard from a number of key figures including kenneth starr who
9:48 pm
served as the council during the clinton administration and we will also hear from the retired professor alan dershowitz the legal team has until the end of tomorrow to finish opening arguments, then the senate will move on questions up to the senators including 16 hours of questions divided equally between that and the content republicans. next on c-span2 we will go back to the trial earlier this afternoon as the senate gaveled in a 1 p.m. eastern time. >> the senate will convene as the impeachment and chaplain will lead us in prayer. >> let us pray. lord, through all the generations coming you have been our mighty god. as millions mourn
