tv   Senate Impeachment Trial Reaction  CSPAN  February 5, 2020 5:24pm-6:00pm EST

5:24 pm
republican trait he haunted them out of the party. thank you everybody. this afternoon for the first time in u.s. history of present has been tried and acquitted by the u.s. senate in an impeachment trial. 20 hours after his state of the union address at the capitol president trump found not guilty on a few articles of impeachment abuse of power and obstruction of congress. we just heard from the democratic leader senator chuck schumer and we also heard from mitch mcconnell. we'd like to hear from you. we are putting our phone lines to get your thoughts and here's how we are breaking up the phone lines for republicans to 027-48-8921, democrats 202748891 -- to one and all others (202)748-8922 and would like to
5:25 pm
hear now that the impeachment trial is over what's next for the republicans and democrats but can they work together and what's next for the president and what might it mean for his re-election chances in 2020 also we have if you want to send sena tax that line is (202)748-8903 and make sure that you tell where you are texting from in your name. the two votes of these up power the vote was 48-52. keep in mind according to the constitution they need two-thirds of the senate to convict a president in an impeachment or any federal officer in an impeachment and they obviously failed to get that 48-52 the one republican and he becomes the first member of the senate to vote to vote guilty against his president in power that was on abuse of power. he voted not guilty and the
5:26 pm
obstruction of congress charge and the vote the overall vote was 47-53. the president, president trump cleared of both of the articles of impeachment and the president tweeting this afternoon a couple of things. first of all we will show you his statement here are saying i will be making a public statement tomorrow at noon from the white house to discuss their country's victory on the impeachment hoax. more coverage on the c-span network but let's go first to peggy in washington republican line. good afternoon. >> caller: good afternoon and thank you for taking my call. it's actually pronounced sequim washington and we are very happy today with the verdict. we are off with concern here that this was a preemptive strike due to corruption in ukraine. there is a treaty and they do believe that investigation will now go forward despite the fact that there'll be claims that it
5:27 pm
simply retaliation for the impeachment effort. the impeachment effort was the loser and i think that the treaty calling for the corruption investigation with ukraine will be a winner. so i'm very hopeful on that front. this was a total abuse of the process by the democrats. think it was an expense to the taxpayer and a risk to national security and was not ever covered by the media. it was just not a wise or a serious use of the process. i think it rises to criminality in some cases. thirdly i think the whole process and what they continue to do from the left is a gross insult to the intelligence of the voters.
5:28 pm
it is so intertwined with projection that it just shows that the rules for radicals is still in use today, however it doesn't work very well. posted you think this strengthens the president among those voters? >> caller: absolutely. this strengthens the president and i think there's no overstatement or exaggeration that a significant percentage of the people showing up to his rally are in fact registered democrats. >> host: we go to griffin and marblehead massachusetts. tell us your thoughts now that it's over. what are you thinking? >> caller: before i was thinking trump should be removed from office but after the state of the union address last night i think trump did a very good job in the push me back to
5:29 pm
support him. >> host: what was it about the state of the union that pushed him back? >> caller: he seemed very confident he didn't go off on it tangents on anything produced up to the script and that's really good for him. >> host: moreno valley california we will go door democrats line. this is gnome. >> caller: it's no well. >> host: no well. >> caller: it's disappointing that we as a people that the people in office didn't get to hear the truth. even we heard the truth before the trial on tv and ukraine and not only that but a whole lot of other things. i'm african-american and i can't even speak to people anymore because they look at me crazy like i don't exist or i'm
5:30 pm
transparent. i have to deal with this every single day since he's been in office for they feel like the people that go to trial they have to have witnesses and he should have had the same thing. we are now all unstable. i feel unstable because i mean he does the human respect authority or the rule or the constitution. >> host: you said it feels like since the president has been elected you feel transparent like people don't even recognize you and you think that's got no worse since the election of president trump? >> caller: yes i do and it hurts because i don't have anything against -- i just want to be respected for the woman that i am in the things that i do for the people in my circle or whoever. we have more homelessness because of him. he wants to kick everybody out of the country and its okay but you talk about africa, haiti and
5:31 pm
all those other places where there are african-americans and hispanic people. we are all downgraded like we are nothing and people are treating us as such on the street. >> host: outside of whoever's going to be the democratic presents a candidate how do you think democrats particularly in congress should deal with the president? are there areas of compromise for him? >> caller: well, not anymore. he took those down because he wouldn't let us as a people know the truth about what's really going on in the truth always comes out. as far as me being a democratic than it democrat since i was 18 years old and able to though. things that i hear that he says about democrats have never heard before and i just feel like all this tweeting and all this other stuff is so unnecessary. be for real. if you're going to stand up for people stand up for all the
5:32 pm
people not just rich people but standup for us all. we are all suffering here. we are going to be in recession for real because everything is closing down around us. >> host: or c-span cameras have been across the capital during the 21 days of trial and i believe our cameras are down near the white house. those aren't of the capitol. those are protesters outside of the u.s. capitol. we do have comments from a number of others who senator schumer and majority leader mitch mcconnell and we will have our cameras keep an eye on this gathering outside the capitol to. a couple of comments on twitter from hillary clinton to 2016 nominee. as the president's impeachment trial began republican senators pledged to vote to defend the constitution. today 52 of them voted to betray that of and all of us. we are entering dangerous
5:33 pm
territory for our democracy. it will take all of us working together to restore it. she is pointing out that romney voted for the abuse of power article of impeachment and senator ron johnson from wisconsin tweeting, we are a divided nation and it often seems the lines are only hardening and growing farther apart. but hope lies in finding what i does together, our love of freedom, our faith and our families. south carolina republican line. go ahead. cocoa thanks for taking my call call. i just wanted to make a couple of quick observations. first last night the state of the union message, we have a lot of people standing and clapping and a lot of people sitting down i was so disappointed in my representative clyburn when he would sit over there and c-span showed him shaking his head oh no, no.
5:34 pm
and the unemployment figure given out. hasn't been that low since 1967. he couldn't even get up and stand up and clap for that. that really showed me. i have been wondering but it showed me that representative clyburn isn't really for the american people and representative clyburn isn't really for the black people. he's not really for our country and really needs to resign if you want to know the truth. to talk about impeachment here we have all this stuff that the democrats have ginned up and it's all just dishonest. you heard adam schiff how he lied and everything. it's just unbelievable. senator romney is a vietnam veteran it takes me back to jane fonda sitting on a tank and it reminds me of john kerry throwing his medals over the fence and i won't save benedict
5:35 pm
arnold. >> host: do you mean that romney's vote on the articles of impeachment, the guilty vote reminds you of that? >> caller: it certainly does. i don't know why but that's what shot through my brain when i heard that romney say guilty, i thought jane fonda sitting on a tank and i thought of john kerry throwing his medals across the fence. >> host: the impeachment trial of president trump the shortest presidential impeachment trial on record, 21 days. the clinton impeachment trial in 1999, 37 days in the impeachment trial of president andrew johnson, 83 days. again president trump acquitted the third president of the tried and acquitted by the u.s. senate in an impeachment trial. we showed you news conferences from senator schumer and also from mitch mcconnell. we also heard from the president's personal attorney
5:36 pm
jay sekulow and here's some of what he had to say. >> let me make a quick statement. obviously we are pleased. the real victor today was the american people but also the constitution, the office of the president and the president himself so we are pleased with results and we are glad this is behind us. we are glad it's behind the country and it's time to turn attention to other things. >> how damaging is it that does is not a bipartisan acquittal? >> it wasn't bipartisan. it was a bipartisan opposition to the impeachment articles themselves. there was on one count one republican that voted guilty. the house you had 53 democrats that did not support the articles of impeachment. the founders were very smart that he understood the concept of how voting should go what their requirements are and what their criteria are in it was a good day for the constitution. >> you're concerned about mitt romney's vote? the president has been acquitted of all charges. we are concerned about anything
5:37 pm
at this point. i have no reaction to it. my reaction is the president one the office of the president one and a constitutional one. that is what was significant for the process was followed. was completed and is now behind us. >> would he think about. [inaudible] >> you know what i'm not worried about it. we will see if it happens. if they are going to continue this, that's going to be their call. think the american people are ready to move onto other things. >> constitutional scholars agree with alan dershowitz's case. >> i'm not taking a test today. hold on alan dershowitz laid out his position very clearly. speaks for itself. >> have you spoken with the president and what is his reaction? >> i literally left the floor and came to talk to you all so i haven't had an opportunity.
5:38 pm
i'm sure it's pleased it's over and he's been acquitted. our job was to defend the president and to protect the way we view the constitutional issues at stake if we did that and again i think the process worked. think about what the founders envisioned and what happened. was pretty impressive the way this happen. i have a constitutional argument here but do you have in your rat particular and the abuse of power's? >> there was one vote on one count against the president. we are pleased that the case has been acquitted. the president has been found not guilty and was acquitted. it's a joke i settle long time ago. we have lost below. the chief justice at some point in the argument asked what you want to subdue? and some point i'd like it to
5:39 pm
say reverse. our goal was to get an acquittal and the president found not guilty we did our job. [inaudible] i think we have a lot of lawyers on her team presenting different arguments that would impact different senators i don't think you can say this argument works better than that argument. >> the american people say he should have been removed removed from office today. sad the constitution that the founders envisioned show the exact opposite. i don't think there is polling that shows the majority of americans thought he should be convicted. what matters is the acquittal. thank everybody. the senate impeachment trial of president donald trump including an hour ago at 4:40 eastern on abuse of power and the vote was
5:40 pm
52-47, 52 republicans voting not guilty and i should say 48 democrats and one republican. it would be voting guilty on that one. article ii, obstruction of congress the votes there was 53 not guilty. and 47 all democrats, 45 democrats and two independents guilty for president trump that they needed 67. the constitution stipulates and it fell well short of it. you're an c-span2 we continued to take your comments in your text as well. but the lines republicans 202-7488921 democrats (202)748-8920 and all others 202-7488922. were picking up on what jay sekulow said what do you think? he said i think the american
5:41 pm
people are ready to move on to other things. you can send us attacked the 202-7488903 this one to make sure you include where you are texting from and your name. surely from louisiana with this i'm glad it's over. the president will continue to make america great. nancy pelosi should resign as house speaker she's not going to support the president from here on out. they are both in leader in the house kevin mccarthy after the votes having a little fun on the speaker's part saying ripping up the articles of impeachment and saying acquitted for life. in middletown maryland to go to the independent line. this is jeff. go ahead. >> i've been watching this whole thing for three years and i've never seen such a blatant concerted effort going after president. they voted to impeach this
5:42 pm
president. this sham. i've never seen where you have the doj and fbi and everyone else go after this present the way they have. they need to be held accountable. we do not have a two-tier system of justice. this is absolutely abhorrent and i am an immigrant. i came here from another country and i cannot believe these people, these senators, the congresspeople who also -- . >> host: jeff b. said that members of congress, i assume you mean democratic never should be held accountable. what do you mean by that? >> caller: when you have adam schiff who parses words and re-engineers your speaking points to get across a false narrative, and anybody with the
5:43 pm
same brain can hear this and know that he is making things up as he goes. he's absolutely ludicrous that this is allowed in congress. people need to be held accountable. there should be laws and people need to be pulled out an absolutely disbarred whatever it is from their positions. >> host: by the way congressman schiff the lead house manager weighed in on the vote i who voted guilty on abuse of power article. adam schiff saying having proven trump guilty i asked there was one republican senator who would say quote enough and who would stand up against this dangerously immoral president who would display moral courage and who would do impartial justice as their oath required and convict and there is. from roderick daniel the granddaughter of. this is not the first time i've disagreed with mitt and i imagine won't be dull as per the
5:44 pm
bottom line is president trump did nothing wrong in the president's party is united behind it that i long with the gop stand with president trump. some stage we hear from carmen in salt lake city utah. >> caller: a listened to republicans and democrats. first of all i came here 50 years ago and i have lots of hope and lots of respect for the constitution. the president turning he mentioned a few times constitution, constitution. my message to all of us, americans, republicans and democrats both of us. first of all because you are republican you are making a mistake. and because you are at democrat, between us we had reagan and we had different presidents and we had clinton. other presidents are working for
5:45 pm
this land. they sent this man here in my message is when we are talking about a subject you need to be informed. see what's going on. find out the truth. don't look at one side only. listen to both sides and will win the president of the united states. [inaudible] >> host: arm and how do you feel about me at romney's vote, voting guilty? >> caller: as a matter fact i am leaving salt lake city. most of the congress and senators, they are losing there
5:46 pm
-- you are there to serve the people. >> host: bogota republicans line expert here from veronica in kentucky. >> caller: yes, i'm glad it's over. they have acquitted our president and they need to start, the democrats need to come over and start working with our president and other senators i want to make a statement. i want to know, has anyone seen nancy pelosi so they can get an ink pen off of her so they can sign the acquittal papers for art president trump. post over on the in kentucky having a little fun with those fans that nancy pelosi passed out as she signed the articles of impeachment. mike johnson will easy and one
5:47 pm
of the house defense teams tweeted is a short while ago. speaker pelosi is too torn up to hand out and acquittal pen i went ahead and. some up for exceptional page meant defense team. the speaker as sent out a statement about today's vote. today the president senate republicans have normalized lawlessness and projected the system of checks and balances in our constitution. the founders put safeguards in the constitution to protect against a rogue president from nancy pelosi. or go to scott in charleston, west virginia. what are you thinking scott? >> caller: how's it going? first of all i want to say i'm glad this is all over it. as a libertarian constitutionalist i actually did not vote for trump okay but i'm very supportive of him on this issue for many reasons. one of the biggest things that really amazes me it never came
5:48 pm
to light throughout this the fact that this entire deal started over the phonecall to ukraine where a prosecutor was fired. he was investigating joe biden son in the company he works for. joe withheld $1 billion in aid to that country. he was on live national tv admitting this. it's on youtube. anybody can search it and this is what it all started over. what our president not have the authority to go ahead and open an investigation and to keep in mind his original phonecall on this, this originated before he announced running for president. he was not even a political opponent at that time. >> host: scott do you think after all this that either the senate committee or house committees will do an investigation of hunter biden?
5:49 pm
>> caller: i would hope that they do and of course i'm not an investigator. i'm not in government. i'm not investigating the sources but it's been stated there has been a lot of taxpayer money that was funneled out through this company burisma that was brought back the bidens both joe and hunter. if this is true they are literally stealing taxpayer money. what point do we have to stop the corruption? at a what point do the american people say no to this man did what was right? this has been nothing but a witch hunt. from the day you stepped into office. >> host: let's go to scott in west virginia the chair of the intelligence, excuse me the judiciary committee. jerry nadler is part of the house managers with the headline on the hill nadler as is likely the house will subpoena bolton. jerry nadler said the subpoena for trump's former national
5:50 pm
security adviser that final decision has not been made yet and one of the last to make his votes known before the senate gaveled in this afternoon was senator joe manchin of west virginia. he voted guilty on both of the articles of impeachment. here's what he had to say to reporters. >> can you explain how you arrived at that? >> first of all i've taken to vote since i've been a the center. one note has to protect the constitution and the other was to be in impartial member and hopefully i've done that. i have always said if i can go home and explain that i can vote for it in if i can explain that i will vote against it. i can explain my vote based on the evidence was presented to the evidence given to us under oath by testimonies from the witnesses that they were able to secure in the documents that we saw. common sense would tell me after
5:51 pm
the transcript that a phonecall from the most powerful person in the world to the most inexperienced leader of a country would be very much intimidating and that's not who we are. i've said the four you can't go around and we can't be the country we are trying to encourage countries to accept democracy and enjoy the freedoms of liberties that we have all enjoyed by using that for a political favor. it's not who we are so it was very clear. the president said he could not get a fair trial in the house. i wanted to make sure he got a fair trial in the senate and i have never seen a trial. if someone wants to defend themselves with their defense counsel not ringing witnesses and documents that would be able to do that. there is no other conclusion
5:52 pm
that i could come to. as difficult as it a would be and divisive as it would be but it's not a political decision could i got home and i go home and face my family and my friends in the good lord and i knew. >> did president trump communicate with you during this process at all? >> no. >> are you worried about how this will play out? >> as i said if i couldn't explain it i would be worried. the people that are going to be upset with me because of the vote if they give me a chance to explain what i'm dealing with. in west virginia if i'm innocent give me a chance to defend myself. give me a chance to prove to i'm innocent. >> do you think they will? >> i don't mean that for them at the trial. i mean if you accuse the up something and that never happens
5:53 pm
of the evidence i have is overwhelming. >> he think they will listen to you? >> they know me and they have known me for 27 years as governor and secretary of state and everything else i think they will trust me from that event. they may not agree and i've said this, we all public servants with you agree or not that's not my job. my job is to give you the facts and the truth and you're going to say i don't agree but i understand the process. >> what did you think of the speech? >> i was very powerful. may rummy and i have been talking and the facts are overwhelming. >> attended dear friendship, good friendship. let it tell you one thing.
5:54 pm
i will say this. all senators to matter what side you're on respect how difficult of a decision this was. this was the most difficult decision i've ever had to make. i have never sat on a jury. i've never had to stand up and say guilty or not guilty. that was really powerful to have to do that. i think everybody has been sub rate. i just pray to the lord that we'd never would get to this and i pray that the president understands. this is not a political move. it's not whether i like the president. but i love my country and i have an obligation to my duty to my country. if i can explain that then shame on me. >> was part of your decision whether you are going to -- voters again and? >> if it was a conviction based
5:55 pm
on the facts and the constitution and the oath back we took i can respect that and i would assume everyone made that they somehow they feel. senator cohen said she believes the president has learned a lesson from this trial. do you share that? >> i would pray to the good lord i didn't say that from last night but i would pray. senator manchin after the vote. we'll show you the votes in just a moment to recap the abuse of power article i the constitution says you need two-thirds of the senate, 67 votes and here's how it went. not guilty 52 republicans, guilty 45 democrats and two independents like and one republican voting guilty or that was of utah. construction of congress all 53 republicans voting not guilty in adult democrats in the two independents voting guilty to
5:56 pm
both of the articles of impeachment fail and the president is acquitted for comments from members of the senate ed markey of massachusetts with this tweet. today voted to convict. to remove donald trump from office. what senate republicans to do this impeachment trial is a national disgrace. history will remember the senate wing cowardly cover-up predicts a dark day for the truth in american democracy. senator bennett come the senate failed to do a job and now the american people must do theirs. kamala harris we just witnessed a miscarriage of justice on the floor of the united states senate. senator mike rounds today the senate trial comes to an end. we have overwhelmingly rejected the articles of impeachment and can get back to doing the work american senator to do and we have lots of work to do. couple more for calls and we will show you those votes from earlier this afternoon. from minnesota this is randy on the democrats line. >> caller: hi. i am just calling to say i would
5:57 pm
rather see him out of office. i think nancy pelosi did a good job and doing what she is doing that's pretty much all i have to say. >> host: what do you think is next for democrats in ter of potential hearings? do they try to work with the president? what do you think? >> caller: i heard president trump's going to cut social security. i hope that doesn't happen. >> host: we will hear from standing next on the republican line. go ahead. >> caller: hi. thank you for taking my call. i just want to say that we constantly hear the democrats screaming election interference. it was a travesty and an attempted coup. they feel that they can't win in
5:58 pm
the next election so they want to ensure they would win by doing this to trump and talk about the ultimate workplace harassment. they decided this before he even ran in democrats bugging trump tower's. the only people who colluded with russia were hillary and the dnc to try to get to trump. it's sickening and i for one i have a thing with the moral beliefs that i have if i felt like trump had done something horribly wrong i would be the first to say that we need to impeach him. this was a joke and i would also like to say to manchin and two romney how would you like to be
5:59 pm
a person convicted based on hearsay? >> host: the president acquitted of both of the articles of impeachment this afternoon by the u.s. senate for the third time in history. the president has weighed in on twitter. we won't hear from him tomorrow at noon eastern. we'll have that live on c-span2 and more for your comments, your called ahead but i want to take you back to a little after 4:00 p.m. eastern today the 21st day of the senate impeachment trial of president donald trump and show you the votes as they happen on the senate floor. >> if there's no objection the proceedings of the trial are approved to date. if the sergeant-at-arms will make the proclamationif. >> hear ye, hear ye all persons are commanded to keep silent
