8:39 pm
[inaudible]. >> and president trump becomes the third president in u.s. history to have been impeached by the u.s. house, then tried and acquitted by the u.s. senate and impeachment trial printed into separate votes today article one abuse of power, article two obstruction of calm congress, and both of those those the president acquitted in the first though, the abuse of power votes, and mitt romney, the only republican melting guilty with all democrats in the to independence. about 20 more minutes left here, if only continue showing you some more of today's events. we would love to hear from you. in your reaction now that the senate trial is over. republicans use and democrats,

acquittal and reminder tomorrow at noon, we will hear from the president. he is said to make comments about the impeachment trial at the end of the trial tomorrow at noon. we will have that life here on "c-span2". boston, from thai on her other line. good evening. >> thank you for taking my call. first of all, i am well aware of mitt romney, i can't hear you. thank you. i am well aware of mitt romney, i was in boston when he was governor, is a man of god. and i am a born-again christian. i know he is a man of god. he is at my church. we blessed him and prayed over him as he became governor. as he left, his wife, had a john

adams bible. given as a gift. i pray that the people of utah, understand his integrity. what an honorable man. unbelievable. so as far as my position, i'd trade that president trump didn't abuse power in his confusion between what he said and what the house said. he said that he wanted to make sure that there wasn't corruption in ukraine and the house said that he was using his power to stop an opponent. i don't know the answer to that one. so i actually don't have a view. i wanted to hear testimony. now as far as i am concerned of article two, someone passed weekly to me what happens when you're subpoenaed in this country. my understanding is that you have to go to court. you cannot refuse.
8:43 pm
now congress, my understanding is they have the right to subpoena the president and those who are associated in the government for asked to refuse congress, is in breach of the constitution. and consequently, i did not want president trump to be impeached. but he is now impeached. and for all of those that didn't want this to happen, history will show that he's impeached. you can't change that. however, i do not know the truth was. but the fact that he did not let congress, he did not under the subpoena, he violated article two. >> so do you think the result, the acquittal, that he was impeached on the obstruction of congress charge, do you think this that all puts pressure on the course or the ministration to allow those records, other
8:44 pm
records to be admitted to be given to congress, testimony to be turned over to congress in the future. >> i think that unless the constitution and the law has changed, they are duty-bound to do so. they are responsible to do so. and if they don't do it, we will be in this mess again. i see people have to understand this. the comments about people talking about donald trump is a businessman. and changing over because he is a businessman. and yes, yes, michael bloomberg, something is wrong here. >> joe is next up democrat line. >> go ahead you are on their printed this is joe from pittsburgh. i am a democrat. i'm probably going to be moving
8:45 pm
to republican sin mainly because of the debacle that they did in the house but not doing their job properly. not taking the time to follow through. the interesting part was when they went to the senate, they actually started out by saying that if the senate didn't vote guilty, as they thought he was, and they were trying to cover it up. so from the very beginning, they were telling us that they didn't feel they had a good case because otherwise, why would they say that the senate had to vote guilty or they were trying to cover it up. i found an interesting. i was a republican but i did vote for trump in the last election. and i plan on voting for him again until the democrats, tell me that they want to govern our country and not play politics. >> phone numbers on the screen. this is from james from
8:46 pm
missouri. trump is corrupt and a danger to our country. he should've been convicted and removed from office. hope the investigations continue into this corrupt administration. oregon joining us on the republican line. go ahead. it. >> i'm calling for morgan. i just wanted to say i am very happy with the outcome. i don't believe that this should been impeached. to start with and i think that they have been after him since the day he took office. actually before. i think he's doing a great job. i think we do need to have borders so that we keep the american people safe. i think that joe biden and his son should boast beat vote be investigated because his son ended up with millions. he really didn't have an education for what he ended up with millions work. i do think there is a story there. if somebody were to chase after it, i'm sure you can find it.
8:47 pm
i do think that president trump is doing a good job. i pray for him every day that god will protect him and i believe that he does protect him. i think he does have the people's interest of the united states. i think he does have the people's best interest at heart. economically and in every way. he wants to protect us. he wants us to prosper. and i'm very disappointed in the democrats. for everything they've done. but especially last night when one of our serviceman who serves our country, cayman got to be with his family again, and they don't have the decency to stand up and applaud him for his service. i was appalled for that. >> we hear from darian in maryland. go ahead. >> i am appalled.
8:48 pm
and all of the folks who work for trump. he is very vile individual. these not a billionaire. he is claimed bankruptcy four times. i don't understand why were they think he's great. he had to sell his yacht, because he was going bankrupt. everything he has had has failed. >> what you think darian nobody is been acquitted by the senate. honey think he use this. >> 's head is getting bigger. he thinks that he is great. there is nothing he can do that is wrong. it is really dangerous for our country. everyone is forgetting the fact that he was aiding and abetting the russians. in the oval office.
8:49 pm
he restricted any of us from being there at the russians. the prime minister i guess, and the investor for there. only a russian cameraman was filming it. we would not have known that if the russians didn't put it on their television so that we could see it printed. >> from the white house. today, democrats full of indication and exoneration of president trump by the senate. senator chris coons, democrat in delaware. the senate has failed as tests of our ability to put the country over party. mildred is next democrat line. ohio. >> i think that he should have got impeached. i knew him when i lived in new york and he was no good there, and he is no good as a president. that is all i have to say. thank you. >> among the people we heard
8:50 pm
from after the buzz this afternoon, the president's attorney. we saw a lot of him in the defense of trial time. take a look. >> let me make a quick statement. obviously we are pleased, the real victor today was a market people. but also the constitution and the office of the president and the president himself. we are very pleased and we are glad this is behind us in the country. and it's time now to turn our attention to other things printed. >> how damaging is this then this is now bipartisan. >> it was a bipartisan opposition to the impeachment articles themselves. there was on one count, one republican devoted guilty. in the house, you had a think three, democrats they did not support the articles of impeachment but this is, the founders were very smart. they understood the concept of how footings should go and with the requirements and rick criteria are.
8:51 pm
>> the president has been acquitted of all charges. >> what is your reaction to mitt romney. >> i have no reaction. the president one. he went in the constitution one. that was what was significant. the process was followed through and completed and now behind us. [inaudible conversation] >> i am not worried about it. lucy if it will happen. if they will continue this, that will be their call. i think the emergent people are ready to move on to other things. [inaudible conversation] >> i am not taking a test today. alan dershowitz laid out his position very clearly. it speaks for itself. thank you and next question. >> have you spoken to the
8:52 pm
president and his reaction printed. >> i literally left the floor and talk to you all. i'm sure he is pleased it is over and then he got acquitted. >> our job was to defend the president and to protect the way we view the constitutional issues at stake and we did that. and i think again the process worked. what about the founders and what they envisioned. it was pretty impressive about how this happened. >> do have any regrets. [inaudible conversation] >> there was one vote on one count that was against the president. so we are pleased that the case has been found not guilty and was acquitted. the president has been acquitted. and let me tell you, i case at the supreme court, john roberts
8:53 pm
predecessor. chief justice said what he wants us to do printed i was a reversed. our goal was to get an acquittal. the president was found not guilty. [inaudible conversation] >> i think we had a lot of lawyers on our team as the house managers said. it would impact different senators i don't think you could state that this argument works better than that argument. >> should've been removed from office today. >> the constitution, with the founders envisioned, shows the exact opposite. i don't believe, but that the americans thought that he should be impeached. what matters is the acquittal.
8:54 pm
>> jay sekulow getting questions. abuse of power and articles this evening, headline credit trump gets bittersweet with a surprise twist from an old photo and they right said white house aides and allies were caught off guard mid afternoon when republicans under mitt romney announced it would vote alongside democrats. to find the president guilty on one charge against him. a tweet from the republican leader, kevin mccarthy, the republican party is unified. that president trump will be acquitted. mitt is flat wrong on this. and he doesn't represent the views on any number of congress. >> obama, elaine on a republican line. >> i wanted to first of all thank you for having one of the unbiased news coverage of this that i haven't been able to find. it is really hard to find
8:55 pm
anybody so you can't tell they have a very strong bias one way or the other. i have listened and tried to tell if i could hear if you are cleaning a little to the left or the right and he couldn't tell. to me that is a sign of good reporting. also, i was a lifelong democrat i have never voted republican in my life. i didn't vote for trump but after he got elected, and all of the stuff that is going on, the planted coverage, i just listened to him speak. this coverage, the commentators immediately after took a spin on everything he said. i think that type of news coverage is what makes so many people turn so strongly against him. i really do. i think there's a lot of people who are getting and accurate
8:56 pm
information from all of these new sources like sand and and nbc, and i am completely in agreement with the acquittal. now i am saying that the house judiciary committee is talking about the investigation. and not letting it and here. they're talking about coming to testify doing more investigating. it is really sad. it does not seem like it will end. they will just not quite. i'm just tired. >> you're right about that and thanks for calling by the way. and there were reports that they are considering and it judiciary many by jerry nadler. >> on the independent line. good evening. thank you for having me calling. i wanted to say i have been a lifelong democrat. obviously, i don't like what
8:57 pm
happened today but i just want to say one thing. i think that nancy pelosi, she needs to resign her duty because donald trump has started breaking laws since the day that he got elected. i am bringing up the cause rhino. with the mueller reports, she was in dereliction of duty because more gave her ten reasons that he could be impeached and she did not know it. >> what you think or what you think the dereliction of duty was. why should she have done. speaker pelosi what she did she done differently. >> i should've her think that she should have started the impeachment proceedings right off the bat when he broke the constitution that the law on the
8:58 pm
emoluments clause and then when the mueller report came out, she giving him a pass on that. they give the american people the wrong impression that he did nothing wrong. that he was exonerated especially with billboards for a summary of that. and mueller wrote her a bottle to that and told him that he was twisting it all around and that not exonerate the president. so her dereliction of duty started right then when she did it use those ten instances that he brought up, that he could be impeached on. >> a quick comment. gina from north carolina said that is doing such a great job for our country. policy needs to be removed. they acted so disrespectful and distressful, they should be ashamed. let's go to chicago, democrats line. this is joe go ahead printed cement hi.
8:59 pm
i just wanted to weigh in here. we've got some pretty serious polarization. i hate to use that word because it just implies so much. but we have been so divided. i would reach out as a democrat, i wanted to reach out to my fellow americans who have an opposing view here. the truth of the matter is, nancy pelosi had no power to do anything until last january. january of 2019. >> when the democrats took control of the house. >> right. so honestly, the republicans said two full years and he was honestly, i wish these folks would literally just look at the

evidence and try the best to really listen to the evidence because he has committed a federal crime almost on a daily basis. >> more tomorrow morning on the washington journal. and if you want more of the trial, all of our coverage in, the senate trial, the documents, all of that available on website cspan . cspan.org/impeachment. in coming up tomorrow, the president will have a statement and we will have that life and speaking at white house at noon eastern. we will have that live right here on "c-span2". ... ... ... ... certainty

from virginia and montclair new jersey, still unsure and we will let you go, the chief justice there. >> the deputy sergeant at arms will make the proclamation. >> hear ye, hear ye. all persons are commanded to keep silent on pain of imprisonment while the senate of the united states is sitting for the trial for the articles of impeachment exhibited against donald trump, president of the united states. as a reminder to everyone in the chamber as well as those in the galleries, demonstrations of approval or disapproval are
