to study whatss went wrong and generally sixen and the other allocating $1.9 billion to address the secreted problemsd revealed by the insurrection. top democrat and topper bob again on the circuited committee on friday unveiling their plan to form the commission after weeks of delicate negotiation. this is modeled after the revered investigation into the 911 terrorist attack and their bill would establish an independent ten member commission evenly divided between the two parties that would have subpoena power and an end of year deadline for completing its work. again, full story is available on the ap website and joining us on the phone with more on this is christina marcos who is covering the story for the hill newspaper and the hill .com. walk us through what is expected to happen this week. >> so one of the big things, as you mention, the bill to create a commission to study events of january 6 and what led up to it, what can we done to prevent another attack on the capital from happening again -- it's a
2:52 pm
bipartisan bill unveiled on friday by committee chairman of the house: secured committee and top republican. main question going into this though, is whether this will have widespread backing from republicans. john was the top of a lien on the homeland secured committee of negotiated this bill but it's not yet clear if we even have the support of house minority leader kevin mccarthy. primarily, because mccarty has been advocating that such a commissionprhy be expanded to include study other kinds of political violence in the last year, such asf the protest last summer over racial justice. so, because it is likely because there is no such imitation or there is no such management for thed committee in this way and it's focused solely on generous six which, course, would focus on former president terms role in those events that is something that many republicans
2:53 pm
have indicated they are uncomfortable with so is not clear yet whether most republicans will support this bill. >> the question we want to ask our viewers and listeners is what will you learn from this january 6 commission and our phone lines are open. you begin dialing front democrats (202)748-0000, republicans (202)748-8001, independence and were talking with christina marcos who covers congress for the hill newspaper and the hill .com. i want to get to some of yourwa reporting as well and this is the headlines as democrats moved censure republicans for down paying what happened on january 6. you wroteid on friday representd sicily any democrat of rhode island on friday began asking democratic colleagues to sign on to a resolution to censure the house republicans who tried this week to minimize the severity of the generous six insurrection. in a letter to bell house democrats representative says illini saint the resolution will be forthcoming and specifically centura public and

representative andrew clyde of georgia, jody heise georgia and paul of arizona for the remarks at a house oversight and reform committee hearing on wednesday downplaying and making false claims about the violent attacks on the u.s. capital. explain. >> congressman sissel amy says he's introducing this forthcoming resolutioninng and t will likely expect that a lot of democrats will sign on to this but democrats have previously introduced resolutions earlier this year right after january 62 censure congressman mel brooks for making false claimse of election fraud ahead of january 6. so, those resolutions have not gone anywhere because they have been wary of going as far as and very few members have ever been censured in the house of history. democrat leader is very leery of making the step in establishing

this president. however, right after a few weeks ago republicans forced a procedural vote on centering congressman maxine waters over comments she made while on a protest ahead of the george floyd conviction -- verdict. democrats have warned this could open the floodgates and it is clear thatts if tensions are simmering after generous six still in democrats are particularly outraged over this hearing last week when we saw numerous republicans minimizing the severity of january 6. >> we are talking about the generous six commission and christina marcos who is joining us live on the phone. we will get to your calls and comments on the question what do you think we will learn in terms of exactly what happened and might have been behind what occurred in the u.s. capitol and around the capitol on january 6. from the sunday shownd this from the state of the union republican congressman fred upton was asked by moderator about whether he supports this
2:56 pm
commission and if so, what we would learn? >> absolutely, i support it. john has been a remarkable job as a top republican on the homeland security committee and he's a member of the problem solvers caucus of which i may buy's chair. he has been working very hard the last number of weeks like five or six weeks on trying to craft a deal that really does make sense that we will bring republican support to it. you will remember that initially speaker pelosi said that it would be a partisan commission and be seven democrats, for republicans, virtually all of us so that's not really fair so they moved and the democrats have moved and i talked to cindy hoyer and others and this is an equal commission and they have subpoena power, both sides have to agree to it and you have to have a majority vote. it has to be done before the end of the year and it will not be current sitting members of congress i think it will be fair
2:57 pm
and should get a good number of votes and yes, i do hope kevin mccarthyke supports it. >> that from congressman fred upton, republican of michigan on cnn estate of the union. the generous six commission will be front and center this week here in washington so we will jump on that o with your calls d comments. what do you think we will learn? christina marcos, let's go back to the last point the congers men upton broughtst up because e of the looming questions is whether or not this idea has the support of the republik and later, kevin mccarthy. >> guest: that's right. mccarthy, of course, in recent weeks in a variety of ways has been working to make sure that he is aligned with former president trump and because well, not only will this shine a light on former present transactionsp that day so we kw that mccarthy was one of the people who was in direct contact with the then president that day and so he would likely have insight into the former presidents state of mind that
2:58 pm
day and what his priorities were and so, congressman upton and liz cheney were also asked about the possibility that it is possible kevin mccarthy could be asked by the commission to answer some questions. that would also put the house minority leader potentially in a position as well as he is trying to align himself with the trump in the 2022 midterms. >> host: why is kevin mccarthy at least appearing reluctant to testify? >> guest: that is because he is trying to align himself with the former president and also a member, right after the attack on the capital he said that trump bears some spots ability but then he backed off of that in subsequent weeks as he realigned himself of the president, the former president. as he is trying to maintain this balancing act of trying to stay in trump's good graces while also trying to reflect what
2:59 pm
actually happened on january 6 and this could again put them in an uncomfortable place is he's trying to defend the former president while also complying with whatever the commission would ask of him. >> host: we got this tweet from steven green saying the great january 6 investigation will be denied by trump and his republicans just like every factual studyy. we continue to send in comments at c-span wj and we will get your calls, 2027 for ##8-0000 for democrats, (202)748-8001 for republicans and generous six commission and our question what you think we will learn, christina marcos, what else is on the agenda this week here in washington on capitol hill. >> guest: another major bill is coming up this week related. >> we leave the last minutes of this program to keep our over 40 year commitment to gavel to gavel coverage of congress. you can watch the rest of it on a website c-span .org. we will take you live now to the u.s. senate where lawmakers will be working on a bill authorizing
