the walter washington convention center to talk about issues looking at automobiles, and in fact it's the public policy day. joining us to start a series of conversations from the show is john o'donnell, president and ceo of the washington area association. thanks for joining us. thank you for having us. >> i suppose part of the fun of the show was to look at the new product but because you have public policy dates inviting legislators, what is the importance of that, what do you try to achieve with that? >> so, we are very fortunate to be located here in the nation's capital because a lot of the industry has to interact with the regulators and policymakers so we are the beneficiary. everything that you see behind he was the latest end of the greatest the manufacturers have been working on.

driverless cars, connected cars, vehicles, they've all been developed and continue to be developed to bring it to market, but they are showcased here in the nation's capitals of the cae policymakers and regulators can review them, speak with product specialists, ask questions, learn about the technology and then attendees and consumers with the beneficiary. they see the same product that was reviewed by the people that decide whether or not that product can be sold in the united states of america. >> what do you think is important for washington to consider particularly those that were present? >> there's an awful lot that happens right here when we have some of the senators and

congressmen and cabinet members. we had the president, vice president, but when they are coming through, they are looking for what is going to have the right balance for the general public, the climate goals, affordability issues while bringing the technology to market any safeway. there's other nations that might be a little more aggressive, but we've always protected our consumers here in the united states. so, as dealers, they want to be able to sell the latest end of the greatest as quickly as they can. lately, that's been a major problem because of the supply chain of the semi conductor shortage. so, they don't currently have a lot of product on the ground. there's not a lot of inventory. but consumers certainly are driving the demand. so, we don't know exactly when that's going to level out, but

we are thinking perhaps six months it could even be a year for some manufacturers. some of the discussions on capitol hill included direct investment into the semiconductor industry. is that something you're association is keeping track of and what do you think of helping that particular industry specifically? ...

>> what does inflation mean to those selling cars? interesting question because it is broad-based inflation throughout the united states right now to other parts of the world and within the automotive sector inflation is occurring for a related but somewhat unique reason that that have grown exponentially. a lot of that to have building blocks and stepping stones towards connected and driverless cars. as we get closer and closer towards level five of autonomous cars we will need more and more chips it's just a fact of life which is why we

should have more chip manufacturing here in the united states. >> you talked about electric vehicles and president biden calls for sales of electricy vehicles at least 50 percent by the year 2030. what do you think of that timetable? >> dealers are excited about selling electric vehicles. we are embracing that wholeheartedly ife you look throughout the entire convention center here in dc it is chock-full of electric vehicles. outside you can take a ride in any n number at the ride and drive at theen lower level there were electric vehicle civilian a whole multitude of electric vehicles and of different modalities so it might be an

electric bus may be a motorcycle there are types coming out and the future of this with a time is an electric vehicles the mr. biden school but a fleet of electric vehicles by 2030 would be described as aggressive not unachievable with a tremendous amount of infrastructure buildout nationwide so right now you can go to any corner and find a gas station and that is just
