♪ c-span is your unfiltered view of government. funded by these television companies and more. including cox. quicksilver can be hard. but squatting in a diner for internetwork is even harder. that is but we are providing lower income students access to affordable internet so homework can just be homework. cox connected to compete. >> cox, supports he spent as a public service along with these other television providers giving you a front row seat to democracy. folks joining us for miami, florida kimberly leonard of insider sheets policy and politics correspondence. one thing she reports what is the activity of the governor florida ron desantis will come back to the program. >> thanks much for having me. >> recent interview at book tour making around at this point. what is the stage of his
7:39 pm
interest or future political office? >> well, governor desantis astutely drink everything candidates who are interested in running for the presidency should do. he has his book tour going on. he is spending a lot of time and a lot of the early voting states. he is getting a lot of press and he is still continuing to sign bills into law here in florida because it's in the middle of e the session. until all the steps you are supposed to take he is taking he is continuing to you know, make his way to the top of the gop and still seen as a trump's top arrival at this point to pick which is not formally declared i guess what is the message she is selling at this point? >> really covered to santos is helping him a little h bit more. with his book he was able to tell people a little bit about what hee is about, where he grw up, but he was interested in. he is sort of introducing himself, introducing his family. even though he got a lot of press around covid and some of the other policies here are some of which were pretty
7:40 pm
controversial. peoplele still do not really knw a lot about him for that provides an opportunity for him. it also provides an opportunity for hisis rivals is we have seen very. >> how so? >> you've seen trump try to define the santos before he tries to define himself he has not officially announce his running is not expected to announce until probably even june. he has the luxury of time allotted by the entrance of the race might not have. you've seen some of those attacks from trump basically trying to portray him as a phony, someone who is hiding something. he does not have any evidence for any of those claims. but you know trump left my keys ready to get down in the dirt right away brickwork is it fair to say even before political ambitions came up out both the governor and trump at least on some level supported each other an aas far as what they're doinn their respective offices? >> against a certain extent. at insider we actually created a timeline of the choose relationship. what is interesting is trump actually endorsed desantis when
7:41 pm
his running for the u.s. house in 2012. it is been 10 or 11 years now this is gone back. and at the time trump had not entered politics himself. so it desantis was the one in office. and then d when trump decided to run you didn't really see desantis offer any full throated support. once he became president you saw desantis get behind his agenda. some introduced bills such as drain the swamp act. so really kind of following president trump's messaging at the time. but then, i would say -- trump endorsed him when he wanted to run for governor and it really did help a lot with his notoriety and with his name recognition and he endeded up winning his governor's seat. but, then went trump was not reelected i would say that is when things started to fall apart a little bit more. trump was not present anymore but desantis was governor and we
7:42 pm
really saw him play that out. >> kimberly is her guesser to talk about florida governor desantis, his political ambitions for june chester questions democrats (202)748-8000. republicans (202)748-8001. an independent's (202)748-8002. we set aside in line for florida residents if you and gives you perspective (202)748-8003 pretty casa texas at that line too. leonard, governor desantis winning reelection largely in florida. what is the mechanics as far as how he hopes to reproduce that automation widescale should he run? >> what was interesting about him running this time as he did not seek trump's endorsement at all they did not appear at rallies together, nothing for it he was running on his own record. i think what are thee main this desantis wanted to do differently that a lot of republicans were not doinger during the midterm since he was running on a very specific list of accomplishments and promises.
7:43 pm
so voters that had the opportunity to say whether they agreed with those policies or not. that was in contrast a lot of republicansg who were running anti- joe biden campaign and anti- democratti campaign. and so he was able to put his record out there in florida. but he also tapped into a lot of different communities that had sort of turned away from the goper might be becoming more conservative and now, the latino committee supported desantis are counties in florida such as palm beach, miami-dade that are typically democratic majorityra counties. but they went for desantis this time. i think there's a lot changing in florida because so many people moved hear from states that dealt with covid policies differently. and so it seems saint moved here and then supported what governor desantis had doneha especially s far as the pandemic policies were concerned.
7:44 pm
>> the government did recent interview with pierce morgan about a lot of different topics. one of things he was asked about or wanted to describe was differences between him and former president trump. i want to play you a little bit of that interview and talk to about afterward. >> yes there are a few things but obviously the approach to covid was different. i would've fired somebody like fauci. i think he got way too big for his britches and i think he did a lot of damage. i also think just in terms of my approach to leadership. i get personnel in the government who have the agenda of the people and share our agenda. you bring your own agendaur and, you are gone we are just not going to have that. so the way we run the government is no daily drama. focus on the big picture and put points on the board. i think that is something that is very important. >> you have not been sucked into responding to any of the taunts is that a t deliberate strategy? >> i'm just not following it. i get taunted and attacked every
7:45 pm
day. you see some of that to meets background noise but it's noted important not accomplishing anything for the people he represents. focus on knocking out victories day after day. i would not be an effective governor is not something that makes sense for me. >> compare and contrast but into that of the governor saying. >> first i want to address one of the things he was talking by doesn't get caught up in the drum and so forth. that definitely is theca case. they're very insular they desantis circle. they keep things tight, to keep things from leaking. something that is work for them so far. i would say desantis is definitely been trying to get under trump's skin ever since he won reelection in florida. they may not have been directly saying things like i have less drama and my administration or i am a winner and you are a loser.
7:46 pm
he was doing things that already signaled a lot of the arguments he made right there in thatt interview. for example, there's a press conference covid vaccine skepticism. it was in palm beach. now that is very close to her trump lives it's in west palm beach and trump's intro palm beach at mar-a-lago. his ardent working to contrast his covered policies with that of former president trump by just being present straight. the subliminal message was there. then held another press conference and he held a dominion lawyer represent at a roundtable with him and he praised her abilities and so forth that got under the skin of a lot and under the skin of former president trump. if another may not be these direct attacks similar to trump making these claims he definitely has been working to do those taunts and jobs.
7:47 pm
that is something i notice just because i am in florida and i see have a governor operates. i see the way he is someone who is always up for a fight whether it's against disney, liberal prosecutors and so forth. so how he has gone about the fight has been a little different but it's only recently we have seen him become more vocal which is really interesting.st >> no daily drama. that's the coded message as well there. >> absolutely. trump was in the white house there was a lot of that palace intrigue and so forth. think that's going be true forever is in the white house. and on what you do with this staff when they leak information and so sio forth. having said that over the course of governor desantis career your
7:48 pm
people have stories to tell their time with the governor coming out during the primary. this is how it goes, during election season. >> let's hear from brian on the independent line of insiders she serves her policy and politics correspondent. brian good morning go ahead. morning kimberly. we short and sweet i served under 16 captains i had to look it up i serve at the highest level. i have served under gentlemen captains, all types. by far the captain he was right on course on everything i actually don't know i would bring them home to meet myi mo. he was hard line.
7:49 pm
legislation or anything like that we keep bringing up former president trump now with desantis. it is tied in. i am independent independent-minded to start. never have the what what is the question? spieth you're going to tighten here. name one policy because really brought them up already every morning, name one policy that overall trump advocated for in the united states at so bad for them not talk about his style and not talk but anything else progress got the point, brian thank you, go ahead. >> guest: voters have different perspectives what constitutes a pulsing a bad policy that of the reasons are patients are divided, right?
7:50 pm
from the tax laws to immigration policy. this a lot of division of this kind of issues from the presidential election the got the opportunity to weigh it and decide how they want the future should be. >> gerry in palm beach, florida set aside alive in florida republican line, go ahead. >> good morning. how are you guys doing? kimberly you've got this morning. just want to base and let everyone know me as a florida voter i am a staunch trump supporter. the way i see it is trump, after everything he has been through in the deep state and whatnot he deserves his other four years for the way i see it desantis ir in the future. and i wouldn't vote for desantis
7:51 pm
because wasn't going to be my government but it also want him to be present in the future, thank you. >> is something i hear a lot from florida voters actually. i'm here in florida to i'm down in miami. they sort of say hang on a second is it really has turned? let's keep government desantis here a little bit longer. as a reporter i cover a lot of trump rallies. talk to onk voters. something i hear a lot. one of things i hear more when i go to other states is there are concerns among some republican voters former president trump might not p be electable he lost in 2020. that's why you hear governor desantis saying for example in piers morgan interview he says call me whatever you wantte as long as you call me a winner. he tried to call me a contrast there. having said that it's going to be a very brutal primary. think we've already seen that and what we saw in the last week is a fragment of how ugly it's
7:52 pm
going to get. talk about decisions and governor is making as governor. how that could affect them either way if he decides to run for president because you mean in terms of policies? park policy with the parents rights built in reporting it's going to be expanded at other things as well for. >> there's a lot going on in florida but for some of the inlegislature just sent vouchers for all about people referred to a school choice. that something they wanted to do so basically anyone in florida who has kids can send their kids to aou private or religious schl and set up a private school. there is an immigration measure. anti- illegal immigration measure that's making its way to the governor. he'll be trying to read it seems in a very similar vein as trump did, pretty aggressive against immigration. and then you do have a policy is being considered in school some
7:53 pm
of the more controversial ones. the legislature is known as the parental in education act is what a lot of critics call don't say gay. olympus discussions about gender identity and sexual orientation in the classroom. in ann environment teachers soe of them are very nervous but that is going to need inab terms of how they talk about their lives. i think regular conversations and so forth. that is something that is spent more controversial. it is something they are looking to also expand under this session. >> is from randall he is an ohio democrats line go aheadad pleas. >> hyatt. i just wanted to say government
7:54 pm
desantis statement a few minutes ago with fauci. fauci was trying to get the word out about thevi coronavirus. otherli than that i really like government desantis and he makes a lot of sense. i think he would be a better choice for republicans going forward in the future. or trump or possibly nikki haley two. trump has been painted by all the things that happened the attack on the capitol and stuff like that. i'd wanted to say i have appreciated dr. fauci and all he did for the u.s. citizens. >> randall and ohio.
7:55 pm
ask anything from that? >> i do. the whole fauci -- dr. fauci they are just people who have different opinions on how we did in his role as traditional bipartisan he was a big supporter of former president george w. bush hiv initiatives. in a public servant for really long time. people were grateful for a service to our country what he did to help inform people. their other claim him as his bogeyman to cap the country shut down and one of the lockdowns and all those other things. getting closer to year to have. the big thing about covid
7:56 pm
follows policies versus how they are thinking about things like we have ' layoffs and so forth. where people's priorities in the course of a couple of months. >> shelby and tennessee independent line, hyatt. >> hello. i would like to say i hope americans do not forget all that trump did. i from the beginning he does not have all this ducks in a row. i think there's something wrong with him. deeply wrong with him. he is a' danger. and i would like to see hopefully before my life is

over, a strong woman come in as president.' it is time, it is a way past time. give us a chance. we are strong, we are smart, we don't take noble. what we are seeing from the republicans they cut their own throats. and mccarthy, that was a big mistake. stuart all right color thanknk you. suggest going to see el supporting nikki haley question her. >> with this i i apologize. one other things look look at public now despite everything that has happened with former president trump he is still the leader of the party. he is still search in the polls. should the opposite with trump you see a a rally around effect. it's probably one of the reasons he was surging in thela polls lt week.
7:58 pm
we solve the documents it mar-a-lago. you think people would step away and say this is too much. when the primary. we will see if it does continue. the reference ron desantis to take a portion of that. >> has been successful for decades. ine' fact, probably as or more successful than it is now. what we could have elected there is no quid pro quo, get rid of the word, remember those words? but when you're getting a guys we get the nomination because of you. he wins the election because of you. two years later the fakeness is up there saying we run against the president he says i will

have no comment. that is not supposed to happen, i have no comments. i am not a big fan. quincy probably knew thatro goig it is not a big fan. to those comments as far as what he attributes to rhonda sanchez success? let'sno he is not officially declared he sees it as a betrayal. the thing is, it usually, if there is not so much baggage around former president trumpt e probably would have other republicans enter the race. you're looking potentially at seven different people in this primary. that shows are a lot of republicans who believe they have a shot or trump has weakened in some way. to trump it sort of like wait a minute. typically it be deferential to the leader of the party. that is what would normallyde happen. he has some resentment about
8:00 pm
that. he thanks basically he made governor desantis and he is owed loyaltyy. we would like both the covering politics for a long time as loyalty. we did a straight insider look at jeb bush and marco rubio. they ran against each other and aa primary. it's very much this interesting dynamic of the student becomes the master. you have folks to run against each other who were alex maybe had been friends, mentors and were close and this is how g it goes. most people assume if you have someone who is ambitious and younger it was to go for you should not assume it's yours for the taking. question about a recent survey governor desantis talking about the death of his sister at the age of 30. vecsey spent footage his sister appearing at that representative rhonda sent a story and purge talk a little bit about why that's important is parts what the governor reveals about hi
