4:52 pm
administrations wrote to the committee in support of his nomination. seven republican former cea's, still republicans, most of them, much more conservative than jared bernstein, they wrote a letter together initiated by one of the trump nominees, kevin hassett. he told the niems "new york times," jared and disagree, but he tries to figures things out with an open mind. that's all you want from a cea chair. again, president trump's chief economist said that jared bernstein has an open mind who can change his mind, the openness to ideas from anyone of any party or point of view that we should want in an economic advisor. despite jared bernstein's years of experience and despite his

impeccable -- seven former cea chairs mrks my republican colleagues on the banking, housing and urban affairs committee voted no. the decision is for the sake of partisan. i'll give an example. this tells the story. the banking housing committee has a tradition of voting for the president's pick. there are major disagreements. this isn't the head of the epa. this is essentially the president's personal economic advisor. regardless of ideology, we support that because, as i did with -- and i'll get to that in a second, with the trump nominees, we support who the president speaks somebody, we support in this body. it's one of the good traditions of the senate. not all traditions are good, but that is one of the good traditions.
4:54 pm
inn't 2017, i voted -- in 2022, i voted for president trump's nomination. i wasn't wild about his ideology. he believed you cut taxes on rich people, give corporations all these tax breaks, it will tricking p down and -- trickle down and grow the economy. we saw the huge tax cut, it made rich people richer, it never trickles down to help middle-class workers. we know that. but nonetheless because the president of the united states picked him as chair of the council of economic advisors and kevin hassett was honest, he was just wrong on issues, but that should not stop us from supporting that position. 2021, pat toomey, ranking member of the committee, voted for president biden's cea nomination. the way i voted for a more
4:55 pm
conservative economist, senator toomey voted for a more liberal economist than he wanted, because she was qualified and an honest person. the next step, the senate confirmed both of them. dr. hassett's nomination, 81-16. i led my side of the aisle, and only 16 voted against him. i stood on the committee and said we owe this to the white house. the tradition is such in the senate, you support the chair of the economic advisors. dr. rouse's nomination passed, senator toomey did the same. we all used to agree in this body until somebody made it much more partisan, never before has there been this kind of partisanship, we agree the president is entitled to have his choice of cea chair. dr. bernstein's peers,
4:56 pm
republican and democratic peers, all came together to support him. there's no reason the senate shouldn't in that same bipartisan fashion vote to confirm his nominations. there are no good reasons at all to do that. i urge my colleagues to support dr. jared bernstein's nomination to be chair of the council of economic advisors. thank you, mr. president.
