to the stars, through difficulty, that is the kansas state motto, a recognition that kansas came in as a free state when there is fierce opposition. the spirit of kansas propelled them to beat the odds and accomplish much. who better to represent our great state in statuary hall than dwight d eisenhower and now i native daughter of kansas amelia earhart. i want to extend my gratitude to our congressional leaders at art arkansas delegation for the opportunity to honor one of kansas most iconic figures. a woman who showed all of this what it means to reach for the stars. amelia earhart was born and raised in atchison, kansas a small town overlooking the missouri river. from a very earlyam age amelia t was a dreamer.

her dreams went far beyond the bank so that river and far beyond the prescribed gender roles of that's our time. kansas have long celebrated our women trailblazers. susanna salter the first woman elected mayor in the united states in 1887. long before women had the right to vote. who during the truman firststration became the woman to serve as united states treasurer. and lucinda todd who actually lit the flame that resulted in the 1964 decision brown versus versus board of education. a ruling that change the world d as we know it. so it is fitting today, we are dedicating a statue in honor of one ofen the most notable pioner women. let it be an inspiration for all. particularly our young girls for generations to come.

working on this for at least 20 years. and amelia ehrhardt has landed in washington d.c. [applause] has been 90 years since the millionaire part the first to fly solo across the atlantic ocean while that might be what she is best known for it she was also a military nurse, a social worker, an author, a wife, an activist for gender equality and a woman who is really breaking the glass ceiling on a field that was dominated by men at the time. female pilots used to be called ladyhe birds. sweethearts of the air. and because of amelia earhart, that then, now, and into the future women who fly planes are called pilots.

amelia earhart had the rare gift of the ability to see, without limitations what a better future for herself and others could look like. and throughout her life she turned the setbacks and failures into challenges. i challenged you better. township fly higher. to change the way the game is played. i know tens of thousands of people come through this very spot every year. i know i am really excited so many people going to get the chance to be inspired by amelia earhart as i have been. she is a true kansas hero, and icon. i appreciate all the work that went into making sure that we were able to have this unveiling today. thank you to amelia earhart family. thank you to so many of you who made the day possible it's all

france statue of the kansan dwight d eisenhower general and former president of the unitedn states. for more than a century standing in this location has been a kansas statesman jon inglis who probably represented our state is our second statue. today, we have a new kansas to represent our state in the u.s. capitol. someone recognized for her historic renowned as an aviator. but also someone who brokete barriers, created opportunities for others and captivated the attention of the world with her adventuresome spirit, kansas is amelia earhart. dwight d eisenhower and our amelia ehrhardt kansas officially has two of the most iconic and recognizable american heroes representing any state in the united states capitol.

i think just a few people in the room who have made this happen. jackie, sharon, and read with the atchison amelia earhart foundation. thank you for never giving up. [applause] thank you for nothing giving up perhaps amelia earhart was your role model. ambition and spirit of adventure that took her around the world was built on a foundational upbringing. it is fitting today the foundation of what she stands is from a limestone from the flint hills. between two and 3 million people from around the world will visit the u.s. capitol every year. it is our hope that with the statute of amelia earhart it will encourage other girls and

boys from small towns across the country to dream, to dream big and to workch hard to achieve those dreams. and for those who cannot travel to the u.s. capitol they can visit amelia earhart hangar museum and atchison were a replica of the statue will be on display. a statue of a determined young woman with short cut hair, a curious smile, a bomber hat in hand and a simpler on her belt buckle. amelia earhart first flight across the atlantic she was a passenger. she clearly lamented that she was a passenger. because when she landed she was asked about the flight and her response was there is more to life than just being a passenger. greatness comes through action. our country's greatest achievements in those around the world is dependent upon those who were more than just a passenger.

cast aside the fears ofai failue and push to expand the boundaries of what they thought could've been possible. from the wright brothers to amelia earhart from ellie and sheppard to sally right it's true in history flight and it is true in the history of the united states of america. it iss no less true today in the lives of every american dream and accomplish. the ordinary becomes extraordinary through action. as editorialized today and atchison globe, amelia earhart was a dreamer who refused to conform to the role assigned to women and established her own trail. we are reminded today here in statuary hall god created each of us. each of us to be more than just a passenger. thank you. alive today, she would not be just in the sky. she would probably be up in space. maybe it from a hobby or maybe from florida or maybe even spacex. you know, we get thousands of visitors in this capitol every year. this is always my favorite place to go. i looked and i watch, just as yesterday people taking pictures. grandparents or parents with their grandchildren. they take them by different statues. i look forward to looking over too this corner i'm sure we watch a lot of young women taking a picture. i wonder what new frontiers will be inspired by amelia earhart and what boundaries will be broken. what new balance will come out of the world from a little corner in the capitol of the dream still living in the

flying cross. i history making moment. of course by the time congress authorized that metal for amelia earhart in 1932 she had already made history many times over and smash them. speed records, she shattered them. among a long list of female tofirst, she became the first woman to fly solo across the atlantic. about a year after that ceremony she would be helping stand up a new daily commercial airline as an executive. both literally and figuratively amelia earhart blazed a trail into the sky. every since she occupied

rarefied air. she did not just soar over as one person. she also focus on putting down new ladders ofth opportunity so that others could follow. amelia earhart helped inspire and sheppard whole generations of aviators both women and men. a friend and competitor of millions named ruth nichols brought the aviation craze to my home town of louisville, kentucky. with their own record-setting flight all the way from oakland california. together they would charter members and leaders of the 99's an organization that supports women in aviation to this day. all of these heroics part of the leadershipok took place thousans of feet up toward the heavens. was first formed in the rich

appropriate. millie ehrhardt's name is synonymous with courage. soaring from coast-to-coast continent to continent island too short. as we all know amelia earhart towering legacy as an aviator is to be rivaled by few she is the first woman as you note and only the secondd person to fly solo across the atlantic. as has been discussed. and in doing so she set new records for speed and time elapsed between two consonants. congress awarded her the distinguished flying cross, the first women in american history to receive these procedures honor. for her extraordinary feats, reporters at the time called her the queen of the air.

but not only was she an outstanding aviator, she had a strong moral compass as an outspoken champion for gender equality. amelia earhart envision aviation as a great equalizer she fought valiantly to close the gender gap. in a 1935 radio address she offered words that continue to inspire us today. these are her words. aviation, this young modern giant exemplifies the possibleti relationship of women and the creation of science. still greatly outnumbered they are finding more and more opportunities for employment and the bank ranks of this latest transportation medium. i hope this movement will ship spread to all branches of science and industry and women may come to share with men the joy of doing, amelia earhart to

help advance the goal she found the 99. which remainsch today a powerful voice for female pilots all around the world. courage and optimism they are in america's dna. and amelia earhart fearlessness in-flight is from the heartland of america. now we pay tribute to a giant and revolutionary. not only in women's history but in human history. indeed,in all are in awe of how she and said she slipped the bonds of earth, top the winds, swept the heights and touch the face of god. touch the face of god. as we gather here are so many

visitors in kansas and governor thank you. and our members of congress and friends, many of us are together in this capitol as we said goodbye to bob dole. i cannot think of kansas without mentioning his name, majority leader dull and last time we were together was at his burial at arlington nationaly. cemetery some months after that. how proud he would be. how proud he would be. i feel that he is with us. as others had mentioned when girls and boys come to the capitol and see a movie that they will visit here and set their sights higher knowing they can reach the sky. and when they see this statue when it is quiet heree in the capitol they will hear the sound of wings wasn't that beautiful thank you.
