from the lens of latino voter. joint for us this discussion daniel garza picky serves as a president. welcome back to the program. >> guest: always a pleasure to be on c-span, talk about important issues are impacting every american city. >> host: remind people about the initiative, who your target and particularly your political point of view. >> guest: sure. we are a nonpartisan and nonprofit what we do basically is engage, activate, mobilize thee latino community around those issues that we feel uphold an honor the freedoms enshrined in our founding charters. to be more detailed, , we beliee we have centralized way too much power, way too much money and too much control in the hands of politicians come specifically in the federal government but also even state government. so we worked to make sure that we honor those expressions and the sentiments of abraham lincoln when he said this is a country of the people, by the

people and for the people. we are trying to reverse that calculus and empower the individual is what we're trying to do. ande unleash really the prosperity that we can have in the private sector. >> host: when it comes to take a look at the united uni, give us a snapshot of the power of latino voters have in elections, no matter who they're voting for but what power do they hold currently? >> guest: enormous. we have now defined a lot of the outcomes of congressional races across the country, especially in the states where we had shown incredible growth. halflf of all latinos by the way reside just in california and texas. a little bit over 20 million in california, a little over 12 million in texas. but we are now over 1 million people in states like nevada and north carolina, just, in georgia. georgia. where startingre to really concentrate in the urban areas as well, so again in any kind of 50-50 state or in counties or
2:07 pm
state legislative races, for example, we do defined the outcomes. the thing about it, pedro, is we are not locked into any party. we are not baked in is what i'm trying to say. so we're up for grabs, especially at a time when latinos are really, really piqued there political curiosity because of what they're saying nowadays. i think makes them i really valuable swing electric. >> host: who does a a better b reaching out to them then? >> guest: i'll be honest come for the longest time, for decades it was the centerleft that made investments who connected better with the latino community. when i say the centerleft i'm talking about the institutions as well, university professors, unions, television, radio, the party itself, the r democrat party, made the investment, made the p connections and, of cours,

renovated from the support of latino voters for a long time. that has actually change in the last ten years or so because of our growth. you can no longer of course ignore the latino electorate. 69 latinos, seeking 55 million latinos that reside in the united states, are 65 million individuals with different priorities and different concerns, and you can connect with them on the issues that matter to them and you can show them that you, your ideas are superior, you are going to of course receive the support t of the latino community in bigger numbers as we're seeing in places like florida, texas and in those, the pockets i was talking about their highly concentrated. >> host: our guest will be with us tour this conversation f you want to ask questions about what he sang and recent studies have done, 202-748-8000 democrats. republicans 202-748-8001. and independence 202-748-8002. latino voters, no matter how you identify yourself, 202-748-8003
2:09 pm
the number to call and you can talk to her guest daniel garza of the libre initiative. he took a recent poll of hispanics about various aspects leading up to 2024 and one of the things you asked was about pessimism or optimism about the country. what dide ab you find? >> guest: we found 79% of the thousandsd? of latinos that we polled in states where there concentrated, 79% of latino said they have a negative view about the economy, that they are hurting, that what is happening of course with the high costs of gas, medicine, of the ability to even buy a home or rent a home right now is really causing a lot of pain and a lot of hardship. 71% of latinos say that our economy is on the wrong track. they don't feel this administration is doing the kind of things to reverse the direction that we are on. the fact that a lot of the
2:10 pm
policy remedies and prescription seem to be to impose more taxes, to impose the obligation of paying off college of debt on the working class is an issue for them. it's more an energy thatbt they feel on domestic energy development is of course hurting latinos. 20% of all energy jobs are held by latinos. these are high paying jobs and their impacted by this whether it's a pipeline, whether it's an war. the fact that also labor participation rate has not caught up toip pre-covid levels, that 27 of the last 30 months wages have not kept up with inflation. this is all creating an impact in the pocketbooks of latino families across the country and they fear that it's going to get worse even. there's a lot of angst, a lot of concern in the latino community. >> host: one of the other thing to talk about in matters oflk the economy, if the economy
2:11 pm
was working for them and ane you crazy, 48% said it was poor since the economy working for them. 17% said good, 31% of the economy was there. 4% only thing the economy was excellent. >> guest: yeah. so again this is a very negative view of the economy but also of the future of america and the future of the economy in america. you were seeing a lot of pessimism. thisis of course indicates a los of hope, a loss of aspiration but at the same time a loss of in this administration to reverse current direction that we are on. i would warn those on the democrat side that they pay attention to where latino voters and what their sentiments are in the economy because it also rated it at the inflation as number one issue that is impacting their lives right now, jobs and economy second and third. it's a real issue. there is real concern, and he cannot connect with latinos onco
2:12 pm
these issues, you are going have a tough time because for the longest and everybody knows if the democraticth party has depended on ali coalition of minorities to give them thosese margins that n the need for winning in the senate and congress and the state legislatures. without the lookth to me -- lato community and the continued support they will have a tough, tough time. >> host: when it comes to those that you polled, can you define who you talk to, whether it beyo the people, how did you look as far as compiling the people that you talk to? >> guest: like i said most of them were in states like california and texas, florida, arizona, new mexico, the southwest. a lot where now states even with the growth has been tremendous like north carolina, in georgia, in ohio, wisconsin, these kind of states where you're seeing tremendousus growth in the latio community. 60% of the folks we polled were from 18-34. latinos are very young. i think i'm heating age is 27
2:13 pm
and the rest of the country is like 35. from what i understand also in a study from the pew hispanic trust they said 1 million latinos are turning 18 every year for the next 15 years. there is just a tremendous amount of energy and growth and vitality in the latino community to capture a snapshot of that community is a challenge, i'll agree. like i said, 50% are just into states. and so how are youju best able o capture the sentiments of latino committee, i think we tried our level best but 1000 is a really, really good number from our poll. >> host: when you take a look at exit polls, mr. garza, from the 2020 election it was also identified as latino voters, 65% offering the support for president biden, 32% for former president trump. as for his president biden is concern do you think that number is still that high? >> guest: no. no. we are not seeing that. fact there's a lot of
2:14 pm
disillusion with the biden administration, and part of the problem with the biden administration is right now they have a marketing campaign called bidenomics where whether o sell americans on the notion that everything is lollipops and gumdrops and rainbows and anybody knows it's not especially in the latino community. there isbobo real pain out ther. people are scraping their knees in prayer try to make it from one week to the next and you try to give me a snow job. the hardship is real, and so when there is a disconnect between this sort of propaganda marketing campaign that shift going on and trying to sell bidenomics and then the real pain people are feeling because of the high cost of everything in their lives and they just ofcannot keep up because wages e belowep inflation. i think it starts to infuriate a person and a sort of anger begins to build, and so they better recognize it for what it is otherwise is going to be
2:15 pm
consequences. >> host: you can't see the ad but the biden campaign did put out an ad particularly targeted to hispanic and latino voters, and make some of the cases you talk about it will show you the advantage response to it after that. >> every policy for joe biden is about -- since he taken office unemployment in our community has been cut in half. our businesses are the fastest-growing in the country. driving our nation's economic recovery. -- >> here onou c-span2 we are goig to break away now for live coverage of the u.s. senate. ap. the clerk will call the roll. vote: ms. baldwin. mr. barrasso. mr. bennet. mrs. blackburn. mr. blumenthal. mr. booker. mr. boozman. mr. braun. mrs. britt. mr. brown. mr. budd. ms. cantwell. mrs. capito. mr. cardin.
