mr. president october the seventh, on that day more died than in the entire holocaust. as the war in the middle east
5:08 pm
wages on, actually what they should say is more jews died on october 7 that have died since the holocaust. as the war in the middle east rages on the in the world is learning details about the horrors being unleashed by hamas which is the world now knows that the u.s. designated organization. this has been going on for a long time. over the last past week and a half we have heard horrifying stories and atrocities committed against the israeli people. last week i met at temple emanuel synagogue in dallas texas and talk to a mom named kim whose two sons who were born in dallas texans american citizens are now fighting in the israeli defense force.
5:09 pm
another woman had been a teacher at a kibbutz in israel. recently really. to the united states. she recounted watching her phone and all of a sudden becoming deluge with messages from that kibbutz about hamas killers coming in and indiscriminately killing babies, children of other civilians. these have no conscience. they have no moral standards. they not only murder babies they raped tortured and beheaded other innocent civilians and the dismembered bodies of their victims and captured hostages to use as human shields or human bargaining chips.
5:10 pm
he gives me no pleasure to recount the that we are seeing played out in real time on our tv screens and on social media but it's important that we acknowledge the realities of this because if we don't, if we brush it under the rug and we act like well its a moral equivalency between the palestinian cause and the israeli nation and that somehow hamas is justified in committing these acts, we will have bought the propaganda of hamas hook, line and sinker and of course we all know that hamas is a proxy for the supreme leader in iran
5:11 pm
and irgc been around revolutionary guard in quds force has helped equip and train hamas and hezbollah in at 11 and in the northern part of israel and this is part of a long-term effort to extinguish the jewish state and to eliminate it from the map. this is not a spontaneous act. i know it's written in many of the newspapers and news media. said iran didn't know about this. well they may not have known the timing and they may not have known the scale of these attacks but there's no question they enabled them and it was their joint cause between hamas and iran to commit these atrocities against the people of israel as
5:12 pm
part of their desire to extinguish them from the face of the planet. these were carrying documents that explicitly outlined the nation's objective, kill as many individuals as possible and capture hostages. those were the orders given to the hamas. other documents included detailed plans to target elementary schools, target elementary schools in the youth center in israel and specific plans to target the most vulnerable population, women and children. in an interview on "cnn" the israeli president provided even more details about the instructions given to these killers. he showed a booklet was found on the body of a of pocket-sized
5:13 pm
pamphlet that provides step-by-step instructions on how to torture and kidnap innocent people so the evidence is crystal clear. this is an group whose only goal is to eliminate israel and the jewish people. and if they can't do that to kill as many jews as they possibly can. in the wake of these attacks we have seen an overwhelming show of support certainly here in congress and across america are the israeli people and the powerful combination of hamas. here in the senate where a disagreement seems to be the rule these days i'm glad this is an issue that has garnered overwhelming bipartisan support. in the coming days i expect the senate to pass a resolution affirming israel's right to
5:14 pm
self-defense literally its right to exist and committing american support. i want to thank leader schumer, leader mcconnell, chairman cardin and ranking member risch for introducing this resolution in the foreign relations committee. i'm proud to be one of the 99 senators who cosponsored the resolution and i hope we can advance it soon. it's important that the united states is the leader of the free world. it's important that we boys are clear and unwavering support for israel of this and it's important not only in what we say but it's important what we do. the administration we know is preparing a supplemental funding request to give israel the weapons and the humanitarian relief they need to sustain themselves. i expect this will include
5:15 pm
weapons, intelligence support humanitarian aid and other various items are given the constant threats they face from hamas and the threat of a potential enlargement of the war if hezbollah were to join in, it's absolute critical that we treat this with urgency. israel is our closest ally in the middle east and that there serves our full support both in words and in action. while support for israel has been overwhelming, a small minority have tried to establish some false equivalency between hamas' attack in israel. these individuals have offered bogus assessments that somehow israel is to blame. sadly many of these individuals cannot even offer as an excuse
5:16 pm
because their students and leaders of some of the most prestigious universities in america, coalition of students at harvard issued a statement claiming israel is quote entirely responsible for all unfolding violence. the president of new york student bar association falsely claimed that quote israel bears full responsibility for the tremendous loss of life" back. it's no surprise this young woman's peers denounced the statement and her future employer stopped his job offer. leaders at harvard and the university of pennsylvania, cornell stanford and other elite schools have faced fierce hemet deserved backlash over their response to this war. fortunately these views not constitute a majority and it's
5:17 pm
important that those who have the evidence to back it up speak out and call it what it is, which is iranian propaganda. one prominent voice of reason among college administrators is our own former colleague ben sasse who now serves as president of the university of florida. in a letter to jewish students and alumni he pointed out the truth, which is his colleagues in quote elite academia could not bear to say he called the hamas actions and said there is no defense for terrorism. it's embarrassing that many students faculty and administrators in some of america's most prestigious universities cannot even acknowledge that simple fact. no wonder people begin to wonder what's being taught at our
5:18 pm
colleges and universities. our children attending these colleges being brainwashed? being only told one side of the story, intimidating to people who have different points of view and silencing them from speaking out and telling the truth? unfortunately i think that is happening on a regular basis and some of these most elite colleges and universities. our kids are being brainwashed. while the it's deeply concerning its worth going to see that some of this has turned into actual violence and israeli student at columbia university was assaulted with a stick outside the university's library. synagogues in utah are forced to evacuate after receiving bomb threats which thankfully were not credible.
5:19 pm
disturbing nonetheless. , flags have been spotted in cities across the country from california to new york. let's state the truth there is no room no argument for hate or anti-semitism in the united states period. now we do believe in free speech. we do believe that those who have different points of view deserve the right at some point to speak their mind that those of us who know better than know what the facts are to have the courage of the backbone to stand up and tell the truth need to speak out as well and just as forcefully so the american people know the truth and our
5:20 pm
actions can follow the evidence. this isn't time for moral clarity or watching the battle of good versus. there can be no ambiguity about where america stands. president biden travel to tel aviv yesterday to affirm america's unyielding support to israel. good for him. i'm glad he made the trip and i hope the israeli people can find some comfort in some confidence in the message of solidarity. if israel needs weapons, which it does particularly if they iron dome which is anti-rocket and defense weapon which is designed to knock these hundreds of rockets being launched from gaza into israel they need the iron dome in order to stop those
5:21 pm
rockets from hitting innocent civilians. of course they need increased access to our intelligence capabilities to supplement their own humanitarian aid diplomatic support, whatever it is the united states will provide it. israel has our complete and unwavering support. as each of us no support for israel is only part of the equation. america cannot relinquish its leadership role in the world which means we cannot simply replenish israel's arsenal or bolster its efforts to defend itself. we must also adopt a new approach to deal with those that are spreading terrorism in the middle east, namely iran. iran is the leading state sponsor of international terrorism and has bankrolled and trained hamas. again i'm troubled by this idea that somehow iran is not
5:22 pm
involved in this attack. of course they were. by extending $100 million a year to hezbollah and the hamas with which to train and then providing weapons and the objective of wiping israel off the map. the blood is on iran including the supreme leader's hands and he's proud of it. because his goal is to wipe israel off the map by any means necessary. iran is provided proxies in the region with the funding weapons and training to enable the type of attacks we have witnessed. we should be absolutely clear president bush some 20 years ago called -- made a controversial
5:23 pm
statement the time identifying the axis of eve go -- axis of which included iran and iraq which was under the rule of saddam hussein and north korea. but today that axis should include not only iran but also russia which is more than happy to have its ally iran distract the world from what they are doing in ukraine and of course the chinese who are more than happy to exchange the oil that they imported from places like iran and russia to provide support for their. the extreme leader of iran once labeled the united states is iran's number won an emmy and there's no doubt that iran has serious skin in this game to expand to let to gain from hamas
5:24 pm
and president biden needs to reassess his approach in dealing with iran. rather than appeasement which has allowed them to circumvent the sanctions that we put on for example oil exports, they are now back in the business and their economy is booming as result of the oil they are selling to countries like china and others. and the idea that president biden would accept anything, any kind of deal even a bad deal, on the iranian nuclear weapon development is giving them the confidence that they can continue not only to negotiate
5:25 pm
an agreement but also continue to sell drones to russia with which to kill ukrainians and eventually they will be able to succeed in their number one goal which is to develop a nuclear weapon. can you imagine, given the death and destruction in the middle east now caused by iranian sponsored proxies like hezbollah and hamas if that same country, the number one state sponsor of terrorism got a nuclear weapon? that cannot happen. it must not happen. so i hope these events have caused the administration to reconsider its approach. the series of missteps that projected an image of weakness to our adversaries who are easy to exploit any in her defense and appeasement as we were learned in world war ii is not a
5:26 pm
viable strategy because countries like iran but by the supreme leader and this theocracy which is bent on destruction of israel, they can't be reasoned with or if there's not really a cost benefit analysis. they are not rational actors. they are ideologues determined to accomplish their goal which is to wipe out countries like israel. so we need to get to work and work together to confront the threats of iran and its proxies and reestablish a credible deterrence in the middle east. until that happens you can expect assaults on israel and other pro-democracy movements in the middle east will be under constant in increased assault. mr. president i note the absence of a quorum.
5:27 pm
5:28 pm
5:29 pm
5:30 pm
basically to get humanitarian aid into gaza and to get as many americans out this week to get out as possible. we got a commitment as you know from the israelis from their war
5:31 pm
cabinet and the second thing was i wanted to make sure there was a mechanism that this could happen quickly and so we have been on the ground for while. i don't think it was on that long. it's probably happen two thingse lead up to 20 done. they are going to patch the road to get these trucks through and
5:32 pm
that's going to occur, we expect it will take about eight hours tomorrow so there may be nothing rolling through [inaudible] probably until friday. >> said they agreed to open it up? >> yes, for this purpose, for this purpose not to allow -- but for this purpose. for the trucks to get through. you guys are such a pain in the neck. but here's the deal. up to 20 trucks. this has been a very blunt negotiation and so we want to get as many of the trucks out as possible, 150 or so in the first tranche and if there's a second
5:33 pm
tranche, we will see how it goes for the commitment is if in fact they cross the border the u.n. will be on the other side to offload it and to distribute it which is going to take time to set up probably. the point being that if hamas confiscates it or doesn't let it get through and confiscates it, it's going to end because we aren't going to extend military aid to hamas. that's the commitment that i have made and so the bottom line is that cc deserves credit because he was very accommodating and quite frankly is everyone i've spoken to since the began, but their are some really hard questions.
5:34 pm
>> are you disappointed you had to cancel your stop? >> no, look i came to get something done and i got it done. i wasn't able to make it into israel but i got it done. as you guys know this is excuse my words not many people thought we could get this done and not many people wanted to be associated with failure and it was quite frankly an hour or more discussion about whether to go because had they gone in this field the united states failed in the vice presidency failed
5:35 pm
etc. right now i have a good relationship with these and i've known them well and also time on the telephone in the past with the palestinian authority. they are in a tough spot. over the last five years, 10 years and but they have been in a tough situation. it had to be in my view you either took all the blame or not put anybody else on the spot. thought it was worth taking a chance. >> it took quite a long time to work this out but was he reluctant to do this?
5:36 pm
>> i've had a decent relationship with him. he's got his own problems and other issues. his entire border -- and this country so i've known him a while. he is spared us a very cooperative. i thought it had to spend more time trying to convince them on the timing but he stepped up and as did bb and they probably told you i was very blunt with the israelis. look, israel has been badly victimized. the truth is that if they have an opportunity to relieve suffering of people who have
5:37 pm
nowhere to go, it is what they should do and if they don't they'll be held accountable in ways that may be unfair. my point to everyone is look, you have an opportunity to alleviate pain you should do it period and if you don't you'll lose credibility worldwide. >> what about getting people out? >> we will get people out but i'm not going to go into any details. >> you are blunt with israelis on the need to get humanitarian aid to gaza or what exactly? >> on everything. everything. i was very blunt about the need to support getting humanitarian aid to gaza, to get it to gaza
5:38 pm
and to do it quickly. >> there's a port visit pie and has indicated to israel if hezbollah initiates a war against israel the u.s. military would join the idf in fighting? >> not true. that was never said. >> is their lesser chance now that israel won't go when, into gaza and that could be averted? >> we had a long talk about that and what alternatives there are. the military is talking about it i'm not going to go and do that either. [inaudible] >> we have had a number of discussions. look, i don't know yet what you
5:39 pm
have picked up but there's been no pushback, virtually none. let me state again we have no pushback. >> from israeli's? >> virtually none and look, at any rate i'm hopeful we can get the americans out as well from gaza and hopefully we will continue to work to get americans out. >> can you talk about the impact of first responders? >> i an hour and a half and 17 or 18 before the end i don't know how to say this, virtually
5:40 pm
every mass shooting, every circumstance where a large number of people have been victimized i have spoken with. when someone is going through something that's beyond their comprehension if they see someone who they think understands or has been through something not the same. similar, it gives them some sense of hope and i get critics as -- criticize sometimes when i stay for three or four hours and answer other questions. it matters. it matters a lot and look, i've
5:41 pm
talked to some of you and that gun through a lot more and a lot more than other people have gone through and you understand. people are looking for something to grab, something that gives them some sense of hope and if i can do a little bit of, then you know it's worth doing it. >> is it necessary to -- [inaudible] >> what do you think? >> do you have a view of jim jordan's current predicament in the house? >> no. zero, none.
5:42 pm
>> people all of the region aarp said and believe the israelis didn't have anything to do with it and do you have any response to people? [inaudible] you notice i don't say things like that unless i had have a source. our defense department says it's highly unlikely that his israelis -- anyway so that's why if you've noticed i wanted to make sure. look, i'm not suggesting that hamas deliberately did it either. it's not the first time hamas
5:43 pm
has launched something that didn't function very well so i don't know all the details but i do know that people let the defense department and the intelligence community that i respect it's highly probable. >> mr. president are israelis operating within the rules of war that you talked about last week being so important? >> thanks everybody. >> appreciate it.
