every day. yet, media literacy education it not yet a national priority in the united states. and we believe that we have a moral imperative to improve the educational system to provide students of all ages with all the skills they need to succeed in the digital world. a media literacy week gives us a chance to shine the light on that importance. so there are a lot of places that you could be today, but you chose to be here. i'm going to guess that you, too, are concerned, concerned about the overwhelming barrage of information and bd be cont we're swimming in. the noise that pervades our information streams -- >> back to u.s. senate that were members are beginning a final confirmation vote on what a president biden's judicial nominees. live coverage on c-span2. the v judge kasubhai. the presiding officer: is there objection?
2:16 pm
no objection. mr. wyden: mr. president, the kasubhai nomination which we will vote on in just a few minutes is deep ly personal to me. my parents fled the nazis in the 30's and not all our family got out. we lost family at auschwitz, and we saw firsthand the horrors of anti-semitism. my parents' families came to the united states and both my parents served in our army and vowed to fight for the rest of their lives against anti-semitism. mr. president, when anti-semitism came to my community again early this year, judge kasubhai drew a line in the sand against that scourge, against anti-semitism.
2:17 pm
when a white supremacist attacked one of our synagogues, judge kasubhai recognized the threat when others did not. and he ordered that the anti-semitic suspect be held in jail without -- judge kasubhai came down on the side of community safety. and just last week, the white supremacist pled guilty to multiple counts of federal hate crimes, and he now faces years in prison. mr. president, i'll close with this. i believe that america and oregon will be better and safer and stronger when judge kasubhai is confirmed. i urge all my colleagues to support him. i yield the floor.

directly stem from russia's choice and decision to invade its sovereignty. >> given the joint u.s. nato escalation with you can against can thrash and with china and north korea joining russia to form an alliance against the west, would not use a world war iii has begun? >> i i would not say that. that is not a characterization that this building assesses. and you seen as take measures to de-escalate tensions and -- i'm sorry, , i'm speaking broadly around the world. but when it comes to ukraine, the commitment of this administration from the very beginning of this one was to help ukraine take back its sovereign territory. i decision i and of the country to invade its sovereign neighbor cannot go unchecked and that's why you think that just the united states but 50 or so
2:42 pm
countries all around the world come together and support ukraine. this is a global effort to support ukraine but i butt characterize it as that. >> the iraqi prime minister speaking a short while ago and he said israeli, israel was preparing for a tax or operations inside iraq. can you say anything about that? and in heads up in israel? >> i don't have anything for you on that. [inaudible] >> for last call was when we write it out, i think that was last week. i'm sorry i'm blanking on the exact date but when we read out that last call was last time they spoke. >> what role is the department playing with preparing to play for a bolstering lebanese army
2:43 pm
with israel after, , if and when this current war in? >> was giving the lebanese armed forces? >> yes. >> well -- >> israeli report say the pentagon is playing a role will play a role in strengthening this army that is supposed to deploy in greater number. >> what you're seeing the first thing we need to see before we get header that is a ceasefire put in place on the northern border. you are seeing administration officials can do to engage on that front. the role centcom place in training up or equipping lebanon on force it if your job want to get it that because we still need a ceasefire in place. we're going to continue to push on that. those efforts are being led by other places in this administration that is certainly our focus and should a ceasefire be able to get put into place, we would have more to share beyond. >> thank you.
2:44 pm
south korea, russia and north korea, and on the constant sharing, can the defense cost of sharing already decided by south korea and united states -- be notified? do you think the next administration -- [inaudible question] >> i can't speak to any changes that the incoming administration would make. i can only speak to ours and you are personally with our arrangements with the rok. i would say on behalf of this administration we have enjoyed a deepening of the partnership between the republic of korea. we share a shared vision for a free and open indo-pacific. you are going to assist continue to work towards those goals and some of the benchmarks that this administration set up from the very beginning.
2:45 pm
but he can't speak for an incoming administration. >> it was reported that russian military delegation headed to north korea and met with kim jong-un to discuss the military cooperation. what concerns does of u.s. have? >> i think they have been pretty clear from the podium that we are certainly concerned by dprk soldiers moving to russia. the visitation of certain delegations different countries, that's not surprising but the movement of troops in and becoming -- in the war that is certainly of concern to us pick something we will continue to monitor. and you've heard a safe very publicly we're not surprised this deepening partnership as a
2:46 pm
dprk has been willing to supply russia with ammunition or, now in this case people, to promote and continue toward aggression in ukraine. we are not surprised but will continue to monitor that. >> when the united states aligned ukraine -- does this mean it is aligned against north korea forces or against russian forces? >> so again i don't have anything to announce or to confirm at this time. but we said very clearly that the introduction of dprk soldiers into the fight, especially comes to ukraine's sovereignty, means they are a fair game in that fight. and so they would be considered lawful military targets. i'm going to go to the phones than happy to come back in the room. missy, "washington post."
2:47 pm
>> caller: just follow up on all the questions about the reports from ukrainian and russian officials of this new element being added to the worker i know you're not going to address those directly but i'm wondering if you could give us just to provide a context for the stories we're writing about this topic today, , like how do you guys see this moment in the conflict, what is the defense department think? can you sort of describe how you see the battlefield equation and ukraine's prospects for achieving at, its goals? >> sure. thanks. so if you're looking for a broad battlefield assessment, i think what we would say is ukraine still continues to push and hold in key areas. without a doubt there is still a
2:48 pm
raging fight in east in the donbas area. they are continuing to fortify their alliance there but certainly the introduction of dprk troops into that region has put more pressure on ukrainian troops further up in the north. there continue to fight and i think what's important is kyiv still stands. president zelensky is still engaged and continuing to rally ukrainians to fight against russian aggression. we're so proud to support ukraine in efforts to take back their sovereign territory here, go to one more from the phone at that happy to come in the room. mike, "washington times." >> caller: i'm good. you can go onto someone else, thanks. >> one more from the phone. >> caller: thank you sabrina. can you hear me? i've seen -- secretary austin
2:49 pm
with the asean meetings. could you please confirm -- [inaudible] and what is update on china? >> thanks for the question. we did reach out to set up a meeting. unfortunately that was not able to land during the secretaries travel. i would point to the fact the present just that with president xi. so conversations and meetings with prc leaders are happening at the very highest levels of government and as was in lower channels. with this department and others in this administration. come back in the room. tom. >> president-elect trump -- to world war iii than at any other time. so to piggyback on some of the questions you for today. like why can'tit president trump comment publicly on this monumental decision? there still bigger story than
2:50 pm
the use of american weapons inside russia and saying will have anything to announce today. it seems to be dodging the elephant in the room, which is why can't we get something from the podium? >> i understand the frustration, tom. look, and i said if it were to share publicly we will but at this time and i just don't have anything more to share. in terms of the comments on an escalation and a larger war, we don't share that. what we do believe is that russia has escalated this war with bringing in over 11,000 dprk soldiers into the fight. and a commitment from this illustration is to continue to harm ukraine with what needs on the battlefield. we'll see that as ask the lord. we see that as a commit we set up from the beginning of this administration. >> thanks. on lebanon, israel has been hitting targets across the
2:51 pm
country without constraint including the strike this week in the northeast they killed 151st responders. does the pentagon still support israel'sam or movement towards greater pressure on israel to bring about a ceasefire before the end of this outgoing administration? >> we have said publicly we support israel's rights to their self-defense. with also said publicly that more needs to be done to ensure civilians are moved out of the bowel space and to lessen civility casualties. in terms of a a ceasefire, i n rec. shied away from the fact we continue to press for this both publicly and privately. more from other folks in the administration. you have seen different officials continue to travel to the region to get to a ceasefire and that was before the was an election. that was before we had a new incoming administration. this has been an ongoing effort by this administration to secure
2:52 pm
a ceasefire in the north and also we want is a ceasefire in gaza. we know there are more humanitarian aid needs to get into gaza. that's something we continue to gauge in on everything related with our israeli counterparts and you're going to continue see us do that to the very last date. >> with the pentagon be prepared to leverage to get more a two guys a? >> we seeing the changes. i mean you you know i thinka few weeks ago we mention they have open a crossing. it open that jordanian corridor again. you are seeing more and get in. is it enough? no. it's not enough. more needs to get in but we're seeing a change in behavior and that is because we are continuing to engage. we're using our leverage and that's why we're saying some of that progress moving forward. >> can you confirm whether the u.s. -- centcom group that's
2:53 pm
part of the? >> the eight has to board centcom aor and is in place, my distant. >> will be a carryover? >> i don't have anything to announce at this time but as you for to say from this podium before, we maintain significant firepower in the central command area responsibility to include f-16s, f-15s, and some of the several d50 twos as well. -- b-52s. with significant posture there. >> lebanon army just announced there are three soldiers have been killed in an israeli strike in their village south of lebanon. so personal you have any comment about this? do you support self-defense for lebanon army? >> so i'm not aware of the
2:54 pm
report you are citing but what we said is we don't want to see lebanese armed forces get in the crossfire of any operations on that northern border. but but i any more detail to e on that. again, we have supported and have trained and equipped forces before. in terms of what the future holds, again will refocus on is ensuring a ceasefire can be put into place. >> thank you. have you seen forge you reason to believe more north korean troops are headed to russia? do we have a better idea of what they are doing? >> so we haven't seen more moving in other than that 11,000, probably over 11,000 in the kursk region. i think we could certainly see more move in but at this time our assessment is not, you know, over 11,000 dprk soldiers and
2:55 pm
bedding with russian forces. [inaudible] >> we have seen those reports. reportedly engaged in combat. do we expected to be the case? absolutely. they are moving to for reason. we expected to be engaged in combat. we just can't individually confirm that has started. absolutely, they're moving internet kursk region kursk region for a very specific reason, which is clarity to engage ukrainian forces. so we have seen those reports and you expect him to engage in combat soon. i just can't confirm that that started. >> i know it's a touchy issue but atacms our long-range or how we are describing them, russians claim to be intercepting some of those. >> i don't have a comment on that. >> overnight it seems like two addressees cables were cut and the baltic. german officials say they suspect suicide. does the pentagon having and
2:56 pm
this assessment? >> we seen some of those reporting and something were looking to but i at this time don't have anything more to provide but it is something we'll continue to look into. >> is there -- pentagon sends aid in this investigation? >> potentially if asked but at this moment i'm not tracking that anyone has. they are very capable people in the region they can to their assessment but, of course, if are asked to assist anyway i'm sure we would be happy to. okay. great. thank you, everyone.

we have all witnessed this with the kids online safety act led
4:28 pm
by my friend and senators with sailed through the senate unanimously. the bill protects both. youth currently impacted by social media and also increasing the root causes of the danger. the addictive design of the algorithm. this action shows me that this body can and will do big things together to protect our young people. this is proof that there is that whole. i turned back to my colleague now for her leadership on the bipartisan bill that i hope will also pass through this chamber. >> i'm so glad that you brought it up. the kids -- it really represents the best among us. a true bipartisan product. it shows progress on the issue. i am proud to have been a cosponsor and working alongside the senators that you mentioned. their leadership. blackburn, blumenthal, willing to step up and truly say here is
4:29 pm
a path forward and let's build consensus and move it. thank you for the effort, all of them that they put into this legislation. i was not surprised like you that it passed the senate an overwhelming fashion. this is not a red or a blue issue. this is an american issue. that is exactly how this must be the it is clear that this body clear message to the uniparty here in washington, d.c. mainstream media, globalists and elites that americans are fed up with the agenda that was crammed down their throats the last four years. a majority of voters decided that the america first agenda championed by donald trump and j.d. vance is the playbook for america greatness. as a part of that playbook,
4:30 pm
president trump has already put together a strong, very strong list of qualified cabinet members. that defense pete hegseth, a veteran who served two tours in iraq and afghanistan, ivy league educated businessman background, that's what we need in the pentagon right now to restore order and our finances. at hhs, he's assigned robert f. kennedy jr., who has single-handedly brought attention to the many public health crises facing americans. he's harvard educated, has authored multiple books and has a four-decade career in public health and environmental law. and attorney general he's nominated matt gaetz, a qualified attorney who has served in congress for nearly a decade.
4:31 pm
matt gaetz has exposed the weaponization of the justice system of the doj. ask yourself, why are my democratic colleagues, the media, and the establishment lo losing their minds over these highly qualified nominees? it's because of the dislike of president trump, the american first agenda, and nearly 80 million americans who voted to send him back to the white house. it's obvious. panic has set in at the doj. the intelligence community and the entire d.c. swamp. they're finding out, as barack obama said, that elections have consequences. americans have spoken. not only did president trump win the electoral college in a landslide, he also is the first republican in two decades to win the popular vote.
4:32 pm
in addition to sending president trump back to the white house, americans delivered a mandate to every single senate republican. they want president trump's america first agenda and they want it now. as a result, senate republicans should embrace this mandate in supporting every single one of president trump's cabinet picks. you would think this would be a no-brainer. not one democrat broke from their party in supporting joe biden's nominees in 2021. not one. however, over the last few days, i've heard some of my senate republican colleagues express concern over who president trump is picking for his team. i would expect this from my colleagues on the left, not on the right. i am hearing grumblings from republicans. my advice to them is, get on board or get out of the way.
4:33 pm
the american people have enthusiastically trusted president trump and j.d. vance with saving our great republic. i am calling on my senate republican colleagues to listen to both the american people and the constituents in their states and support president trump's vision for his cabinet. the last time around, the republican senate took months to confirm president trump's appointments, if not years. as a result, president trump had to govern with one hand tied behind his back because some of his cabinet members were never confirmed. that's completely unacceptable this time around. we need to help president trump. we need to help him usher in a new golden age in america. be a team player. it's time to move the ball down the field. you know, i spent many years as
4:34 pm

obama administration and corporate lies by the media that tried their best to keep him out of the white house. the last thing he needs is obstruction from senate republicans. he is a large part of why we just won the senate and a lot of these people got reelected. 76 million americans decisively chose president trump and his america first agenda -- 76 million. this is a record for any republican president in our nation's history. let that sink in. this is not because of any of us. this is because of president trump, who is the most effective communicator and leader in modern history. it's because he's a successful businessman, not a career politician. and now elected republicans are expressing frustrations with his cabinet picks.
4:36 pm
who do republican senators think they represent? they are representing the voters in their states. i remember when 20 -- that's right, 20 senate republicans voted to confirm merrick garland for the top law enforcement spot four years ago for the biden administration. that's their prerogative. as attorney general, merrick garland turned the doj into a weapon -- a weapon against president trump donald trump, republicans, and law-abiding u.s. citizens. the perversion of law that merrick garland embraced at the doj makes third world about a -- banana republics blush. secretary of transportation pete buttigieg received 36 republican

nominees' personal lives being a focus point. need i remind my colleagues of rachel levine, a transgender woman who is the assistant secretary of health at the department of health and human services. multiple republicans voted for her, and that's their prerogative. or tracy stone-manning, the director of the bureau of land management, who was literally a member of an ecoterrorist organization that spiked trees with metal rods to harm hijackers when they cut into this tree with a chainsaw. she was confirmed. or sam britton, a former deputy assistant secretary in the office of nuclear energy who repeatedly stole women's luggage at airports while travelling on the taxpayers' dime. i didn't hear a peep from democrats or the mainstream media about these disastrous picks. so met me ask my colleagues
4:40 pm
this -- if democrats won the senate, the house and the white house, do you think a single democrat would be going against kamala harris' nominations? absolutely not. senate democrats would green-light every single one of hires hires' cabinet picks without giving it a second thought. that's her prerogative. democrats, they get this line. that's what they do. they did it for the bidens, and they would have done if for the harris administration. and, believe me, none of her cabinet nominees or other high-level staff would be any more qualified or morally upright than president biden's picks. to my republican colleagues, remember that the media hates donald trump. i think we'll all admit that. and we'll do anything to seek his nominees and stop his agenda. the media will everything it can to keep america from getting back on track.
4:41 pm
the media doesn't care when extreme leftists get important roles in a democrat administration. they don't care. the media doesn't care when establishment figures from either party, political party, gets jobs. the media only whips into a frenzy when an american first candidate gets the nod. the media only pretends to care about qualifications, credentials and character when their power is being threatened. so i encourage my senate colleagues to listen to the media about as much as the american people did this election -- not one bit. the mainstream media has been completely discredited after this election. treat them as such. we need to trust that president trump is picking the right people for the job. that is his job. we should defer to him on who he
4:42 pm

a little over a minute and about six miles away so all of the sound is hitting us here the tower of telemetry nominal flying straight through. we do sale 33 rapper engines lit up on telemetry screens. at this point we have passed to that point of maximum air dynamic pressure that max q. now coming up in just a little over a minute from now it's going to be hot staging so we are going to see the six engines on the scheppach night while still attached to the booster and just before that we will see all three center engines on the booster shutdown in what we call mico most engines cut off instead of the main engines. and so while we continue to watch it go up a lot of our flight comptrollers looking at the systems around the tower and
5:03 pm
we have to send a manual. [cheers and applause] just about 30 seconds away from hot staging. and we heard the tower gofer catch. the return flight is set for true. [applause] >> stage separation. >> hot staging confirmed on the ship booster going and we are gofer catch. hopefully i have a booster coming home real soon.
5:04 pm
>> great views of planet earth behind that booster. right now it's performing on the back burner good news they are telling us the pressure is inside the ship is good and that's the second stage or the upper portion of the vehicle. follow along with the telemetry on the bottom of the screen. the booster is currently in its post booster burn. at last a little under a minute approximate 30 seconds left. 5:09 pm
we can see on our screen the ship giving us incredible views brought to us by starlink. this view is interesting because we can see basically the receiving tile lines that were referred to earlier where we mentioned we have removed a number of tiles in order to push the envelope on the ship and demonstrate what its capabilities are. there we just heard a call out for engine cutoff. great news there. everything continuing to look awesome for the ship. a full view looking at the ship here. nominal orbit insertion. there was a call out we are waiting for, confirmation of good orbital insertion for the ship today.
5:10 pm
it has been a very exciting afternoon so far. we would like to send it back over to dan who can give us that wide view experience. once again are you okay after witnessing another starship launch >> yeah totally fine. you guys had to be. this is the only way to do this. this is fantastic. it's really cool to see it. it didn't go for the booster catch a day initially we were good and then we tried to commit criteria and did the osher diverts so we did the water landing is everybody saw. we will dig into a little bit more. again we have done it once and we have done it twice and we will keep trying to do it with the core capabilities of starship and what makes it so incredible. there's a lot left. we are almost 10 minutes into this flight so about 50 plus minutes still to go. the ship is on his its way around the planet. it's got a job to do and in
5:11 pm
space firm and we will light one of the raptor engines and you see all the ones in the middle to demonstrate it. we can go into the microgravity environment critical as we start to do some orbital missions in the not-too-distant future. following that we will see a ship entry, maybe a splashdown and we will really be pushing the ship on the swan. we are essentially putting it in places where we expect it might not do so great to help us learn and maybe it'll open up more capabilities. i will check back in with everybody in a little bit. i'm going to tune and watch the ship fly around planet earth and hopefully we can see a reentering in the not-too-distant future. back over to you guys. >> thanks, stan. the mission is unpredictable what we saw was superheavy splashing down in the gulf of mexico today but that's exactly
5:12 pm
why is the standards for the test area around the pad and around the flight path to launch will remain closed until further notice. >> it enables or teams to quickly learn and execute the changes in hardware upgrades and the probability of success in the future. please do not attempt to approach the booster in the water for your safety as well as for that of our team that will be working on the recovery. we are going to to continue commission is not done. >> exactly. the ship is still coasting but it has been nonstop since left off than with the booster having completed its job for the day we will take a short break for the next 35 minutes or so and continue to perform entry. starlink may enable us to talk to the ship without mitigation blackouts.
5:13 pm
we are still testing the stage of flight so nothing is really certain. >> if we do have views we will be sure to bring them to you live in the course one of those views includes that of our payload and we are looking forward to it. so we will come back into few minutes around two plus, 35 minutes. >> views are no views we will see you back here in 40 minutes for coverage of starship's re-entry and hopefully we will see a splashdown. ♪♪ ♪♪

this is a committee made up of both republican and democratic legal experts. a review of judge pennell's record make it easy to see why the committee put her name forward. in letter after letter, people from different perspectives -- prosecutors, law enforcement officials, judges, and many others -- described judge pennell with the same high praise -- fair, insightful, professional, prepared. in other words, she is a qualified and deserving pick to entrust with upholding our nation's laws and protecting our citizens' rights. i'm especially pleased to say that judge pennell's roots in washington state run as deep as her impressive legal knowledge. she grew up in richland where her father worked at the hanford nuclear reservation. she attended the university of washington, returned from stanford law to clerk for district court judge waley in spokane and has been an active and respected member of our state's legal community ever
