of south carolina and i think about all of the opportunities that weren't afforded her, you know coming out of segregation i bring that perspective to oregon saying, you know, my mom was a rural kid that didn't have a lot of opportunities. and i'm going to make sure that i bring that for all of the kids in oregon. >> watch new members of congress, all next week starting at 9:30 p.m. eastern on c-span. welcome back to washington journal we're joined by representative harriet our republican of wyoming a member of the judiciary committee also the natural resources committee. welcome back to the program, congresswoman. >> thank you it is wonderful to be here. >> you serve on the judiciary committee to i want to ask about recent attacks by elon musk other allies of president trump. attacking essentially the federal judiciary, and saying that they don't have the right to rul' and that they should be
4:31 pm
investigated, elon musk saying that the judges should be impeached. what is your take on that? ....d. i find the decision shoul. the reason i say that is because we have been bombarded for use with the idea of this all-powerful executive branch prevents the bureaucracy and the administered of agencies. the present is the right to do things such as under the last administration to see all people claiming to forgive billions of dollars in or millions of
4:32 pm
dollars in student loans hundreds of millions of dollars in student loans. despite the fact congress never passed a lawaw. the den that to the department of education. the present has the right to do that because he oversees the department of education. >> i'm sorry who said that? the judiciary block questioned. >> they did there many people in that media the mainstream media were perfectly comfortable with the idea that the president had the authority to do something through an agency that is contrary. quick sleep in that media stylistic with the three branches of government. do you think the judiciary has overstepped this abounds do you think there's any ambiguity as far as what their role is as compared to the president or congress? >> is not a matter of rules they are defined by article one, two, and three. twelve that the decision is the right decision. that is i what they are attackig elon musk in the present are there saying illegally what these are judges are saying
4:33 pm
their decisions are not legally sound. we all have the right to criticize or disagree with a judge if they issue a decision that we disagree with. an' so, have any problem at them sink thesee decisions are legaly suspect and they should not stand. were they going to do? they're going to do what we always do they're going to appeal them. it is that they're going to defy them they will feel them up to the process thehe president's already said that we knowth thas at the department of justice is going to do and that is the correct process to follow. >> the department of government efficiencies subcommittee and the health website representative marjorie taylor greene, they held their first hearing yesterday. we covered it on c-span if you miss it it's on our website. but i want to play you a portion of the top committee democrats this is melanie stansberry she has some remarks and then i want you to respond. >> i also want to point out literally while we have been sitting there for the last
4:34 pm
4:35 pm
basic constitutional responsibility on the separation of powers. >> what you think, congresswoman? plus i don't think she understands the, relationship between the debt ceiling of what we are doing in terms of a budget or the spending or whatce doge is doing. those are not necessarily related to raise the debt ceiling is to simply pay the bills that have already been incurred. i find it rather strange in light of the fact we are all one month into this administration without bills coming due because of the last demonstration. so a raise in the debt ceiling so wece can pay the bills incurd or i find itup very strange argument. i find it to be rather-rather bizarre she is attempting to equate cutting spending through doge and identifying programs that we don't want, don't need and should not be funding with paying the bills that have already been incurred. that's just strange.
4:36 pm
>> she also said elon musk is breaking the law and you, the republicans in congress are not holding him accountable. >> would i would ask is how is he breaking the law? he is been appointed by the president. just like any other appointee or special employee of the presidential office. he has been appointed in tasked withth going in and looking at w thee government is spending money. i cannot for the life of me figure out what that would be breaking the law and that is a questionin attribute asking thee folks it's easy to throw things around and say something like that. like to see the proof how is breaking the law. what if you like to join our conversation ask representativee harriet hageman republic of wyoming to do so she will be with us for about 20 minutes. once a republican 202-748-8001. democrats in two 202-748-8000.
4:37 pm
independence 2027488002. earlier this week a group of about 30 house democrats led by representing glenn ivey of ireland he will be our guest after your segment. they wrote a letter to the senate judiciary committee urging them to reject kash patel as director burrell read you a little bit of that parable put on the screen for folks to read. the nomination of mr. patel an individual witosto law enforcement experience and a history of politically c inflammatory snts is clearly a break from tradition d one that deserves extensive scrutiny as result. he hasublied a list of political appointments in his book and has a promise to shut do f headquarters on his first day in office. the fbi direcs n a position for an erratic political actor focused on retribution.
4:38 pm
it continues by like you to respond to that. >> i just think that rhetoric and the hyperbole is off the charts in terms of making this accusation. kash patel has extensive experience in dealing with the issues that he will be as head of the fbi. the other thing to understand is that prior to 9/11, it was the field offices for the fbi that did the vast majority of the work. there was an obviously on fbi office in washington d.c. and they did work as well. but our field offices were fairly independent and they function much better. after 911 the head of the fbi mueller brought everything here to washington d.c. to stockpile thell power here. if you talk to people who are long time fbi employees and people dealt with the fbi, they will tell you that is when the fbi became politicized. so moving the work of back out into the field offices where they should be and reducing the footprint here in washington d.c. i see is a very positive
4:39 pm
thing. i think what you are seeing is the cattle wallowing of the idea would start hezbollah power out of washington d.c. and return it tothe states where itow belongs. again, there's nothing stated in that paragraph you just read that is entirely accurate for what's happening. kash patel's absolute qualified projects including he has published a list of political opponents in his book? >> i would o like to see how tht is written. i think is very common in this place to take things out of context. i do not know what they are referring to there. i think again, let's read the book, students as compared to the letter and that i can comment on that. just commenting on what they say about what he allegedly wrote, i do not know if that's accurate. >> you've not read kash patel's book? to know. >> of huntsville waiting to talk to it we will go tono calls for kyle is in buffalo, new york republican hi kyle. >> good morning c-span.
4:40 pm
thank you. think the problem is some people are just nervous with the whole elon musk issue whether it be legal or not the problem is you have a billionaire who is in charge of slashing government waste, fraud, and abuse. i think that is the problem. i do not know that legal the lel legalities of it all. and that's pretty muchch what i have to say too. >> for. >> why does that bother you, kyle? >> you know, i don't know if it's fake newss or not. but you hear about his background with south africa and just any time you are talking about a billionaire, it's just a tough situation. you know they didn't get their money honestly. i'm sure a portion of it is. but there's a lot of people you
4:41 pm
have to step on and crush to get into that type of position. i think a lot of people even myself just feel a little uncomfortable having a foreigner in charge with our books i th think. >> okay well for congresswoman hageman's response. >> mr. musk is a naturalized citizen of america. i do not think there's been any legitimate allegations about apartheid or anything associated with that in any way whatsoever. apartheid ended in africa several decades ago as bad as it was that has nothing to do with elon musk. weather is a millionaire or a billionaire is irrelevant to whether site identifying waste, fraud and abuse that we should not be paying for. one of the things i find interesting about this discussion is that when he identifies these programs in the way our monies being spent around the world, i would bet you 80 -- 90% of the people in this country republican,
4:42 pm
democrat, o independent, a political would say were spending money on or what? $36 trillion in debt? we are spending a trillion dollars a year on interest? our interest payments are higher than what we spent on defense and we are paying what in guatemala? i think it's a very legitimate for us to go it and look, pull up the hood start wiggling around in there and figuring out what's going on under the hood in washington d.c. and how a moy is being spent. that is not the wrong thing to do. >> i want to ask you something on the front page of the "new york times" this morning about elon musk insole color brought them up. under trump shakeup benefits for musk empire, firings undercut litigation and inquiries. it is talking about all of the-at least 11 federal agencies that have been affected by those moves have more than 32 continuing investigations
4:43 pm
pending complaints or enforcement action insultt mr. musk six companies according to the review of the "new york times" and of course you know he's a major government contractor as well. so, does that give you pause? does that make you feel his actions with doge could be enriching himself? >> identifying ways in which we are wasting money has nothing to do with enriching elon musk number one. number two is a very, very, very common. what is that convenient to have federal that are investigating you've fired and just say look we are saving money? >> i am not seeing that happening. i am going to again objects to the basici' premise of your question. i have a a very hard time believing things of the "new york times" after they pushed forward with the russia, prussia, russia collusion hoax for years and have yet to apologize for all of the dishonesty and the lies they
4:44 pm
told during the course of that and many other things. the "new york times" is not known for being necessarily accurate in their reporting. that is number one. number two having dealt administrative agencies through 30 years ofth litigation and trl experience, it is not uncommon for them to bring enforcement actions against people and they've done absolutely nothing wrong. that is why we are innocent until proven guilty in this country. so, having an action brought against you enforcement action or a proceeding does not mean a lot until it's resolved. >> patrick is a republican and hunting town, maryland. good morning. >> good morning. how are you? >> fine, go right ahead. >> so, i've been a registered republican my whole life. having to vote this last cycle, as part of my duty as a citizen i had a hard time voting for
4:45 pm
him. but i did so because of the things he promised. life is hard, blue-collar work is hard. i have to pay bills, i have to feed a family of 5p's not making things cheaper. things are more expensive including gas. i do not see how brooding through these departments and putting people on leave, especially you offer people buyouts but the only ones taking them are the ones that were going to retire already. so you're costing us more money because these people are now getting nine months of free pay before they retire. and i heard yesterday they are buying $400 million worth of armored tesla's for musk that does not seemed like cutting government waste and spreading buying electric cars that only have a 300-mile range. so, maybe you could explain why my tax dollars are going to be going towards buying electric cars that are armored?
4:46 pm
i assume it's a cyber truck. why would wee be buying $40 million worth of those? >> congresswoman? >> i am not aware were going to be buying $40 million worth of armored tesla's. i do not believe that is something that is happening for you indicated you heard that yesterday. i am not going to deal in rumors number one. number two he's been in office for one month. the inflation ratee you are seeing is in fact 3% year-over-year. again that is not donald trump's fault. that is because of the spending and the policies from the past administration. i think it is very disingenuous to try to blame someone who is been there for one month in and attempting to cut the cost of government from increasing costs. the inflationary pressures were baked in the i cake because of e ira and the amount of spending the federal government is done. the fact he's going in and attempting to cut that federal spending tells you we will eventually be y able to bring tt
4:47 pm
inflation down. as far as gas prices he is an entire energy policies based on the idea we need to be energy independent we need to be producing domestically. the increased cost us and we have to import energy. we have all of the energy in the united states patent only to meet her current demand but our demand into the future and be a net exporter of food coal, oil and gas, uranium, et cetera. weav have the ability to be entirely energy independent. as we move toward that and continue or start building again the infrastructure necessary, you will see prices decrease. >> congresswoman this is what i found about patrick's question. this is a fortune magazine that said state department might buy $400 million worth of armored tesla's from doge and ceo elon musk. let's as the state department include a line item in its procurement forecast to buy
4:48 pm
armored electric vehicles invited 400 million amid musk vast cost-cutting spree across the federal government. >> we ought to look at that i don't think we ought to be buying electrichi vehicles. i am with you on that. >> patrice is a republican in spartanburg, south carolina good morning. >> a lo. first of all, let me say first of all ije love your jewelry. but let me go ahead and know that like to move things along. >> i think it is ludicrous complaining about transparency in government spending. but my question is, what does this administration plan to do about child trafficking in the trees and that has gone on?
4:49 pm
>> the trees and what you mean patrice can you be more specific? >> there's been a lot of treason that has went on with this last administration. >> what i would say thatst in terms of human trafficking and the child trafficking and it is one of the most horrific legacies that we will have of the biden administration. they lost over 30,000 unaccompanied children it came across the borders. whatha that means they're workig in sweatshops. there being sex trafficked or they are no longer with us. it's absolutely a horrific state of affairs. it's the fault of thosese hhs ad the department of homeland security, mayorkas and the head of hhs allowed through the thousand children at a minimum to disappear. the human trafficking over the last four years has been absolutely off the charts. mostly women and girls and children are the ones who have suffered. when each refining those children. i know kristi noem is made that
4:50 pm
a priority. i often said mayorkas was the largest human trafficker in u.s. history. i will stand by that statement. it's devastating what's happened over the last four years overt 20 million illegal aliens have come into this countryov under pink coyotes and the drug cartels. the human traffickers, it is a tragic and we need to get our arms around it. we need to make sure it never happens again. >> richard a democrat in augusta, georgia you are next. >> good morning. i have a lot of issues with congress. i'm going to start off with this congressman vivek ramaswamy you support the george lloyd police reform act and do you support the john lewis and voting rights bill? i know for a fact that burgess,
4:51 pm
donald, senator tim scott, three bloke black men vote against the bill but how can they do that will be been struggling to have a right to vote for the longest? and now also, elon musk is he running the country or is president trump? those people's got working for him have security clearances to be doing what they're doing question mckay and veteran i have had a top-secret security clearance i know what it takes to get one. why do you guys want to keep supporting a man who is a convicted felon, a criminal of sexual abuse and fraud for all of these t years. you talk about efficiency the country is not built a refinery we've been producing oil since the barack obama years per. >> richard, we've got a lot to
4:52 pm
handle there. >> a lot to unpack. thank you for your service i appreciate that. as far as the security clearances i am confident every one of the people who are workingth with doge and under president trump have the necessary clearances to do the work they arere doing. it's absolutely president trump is running this country i find it rather rich that you would ask that question when you can see how incredibly active and intellectual intelligent president trump is. especially when you compare him to president biden who we all know was suffering from severe dementia for several years if not all four years of his presidency. as far as him being a convicted felon,ic i get the loft arrogane president trump was off the charts and as an attorney i was horrifiedy as to how our courts had weaponize into one man for political purposes. we never went to return to that again that is not who and what the united states of america is there as far as the voting rights bill everybody has the right to vote. we have worked very hard to make
4:53 pm
sure that it is easy to vote but we want to make it hard to cheat. every single person who has a right to vote in this country cans vote it's actually pretty easy to vote in this country and going to push back a little bit onis that. as far as the refinery i agree ruthie would need to building refiners would not built a refinery in thisd country since 1979 and i'm hoping under this administration we can do that. >> georgece floyd? >> the george floyd police reform act i'm not going to get in the middle of telling the police have to their job. i do not thinknk that is my responsibility they have an extremely difficult job in new york, in chicago, and atlanta, it's extremely difficult and i'm going to support the police. if they do something we will address that but for the most part i think they are there to protect us. to take care of us they take their job very, very seriously i'm going to support a j law enforcement. >> 's talk to joe and hackensack, new jersey independent line you are on.
4:54 pm
>> good morning, thank you c-span. mr. hageman i was wondering just listening to your such a breath of fresh air. have you ever considered the 2028 running for president? thank you and that's my question. [laughter] you are so kind. i like representing wyoming right now but thankno you for te confidence.. >> gary is a democrat good morning. >> caller: good morning. >> doge first of all mr. hageman i want to thank you for going on i see how aggressive and how she addresses you and i give you a lot of credit for standing up to that. i am a registered democrat. i have never been so embarrassed by my party as i have been since trump gote in. watching them lose their mind
4:55 pm
and watching the media lose their mind and twist and turn different things at which every station, news nation, cnn, msnbc, fox, newsmax, and i cannot believe the lies and the weight they can twist something. i am very proud, i really am of president trump exposing all that he is exposing. i hope he can keep us out of wars and i do not understand how people are not in agreement with that thank you very much for. >> can i ask did you vote for president trump? >> i did. i did. >> gerry, we have voiced is the fact that he is actually appealing to a very broad base of people. what you have said, everything you said is very common sense. i'm going to tell you we do have some very good democrats.
4:56 pm
he is a wonderful man he is a very thoughtful man. i think he is a good man. i do have to question the approach the democrats are making to where we are for the very reason of what you have described. as a democrat you voted for prep president trump you voted for what he promised he was going to do which was cut spending, root out the waste, fraud, abuse, return power to the states. produce domestic energy and be stronger on the world stage and all the things we can all wrap her arms around them. that's's why i'm so surprised at the reaction to doge because exposing these things out cap t. democrat, independent republican reeve never voted in your life when you look at the weight usaid has been spending our money it is common sense to say whoa, i don't think we should do that. we out to be making for the kids in philadelphia can read and do mathematics but we need to be focusing domestically on what we
4:57 pm
are doing a strong america makes for a safe world a weak america makes for a very w unsafe and unstable world. it is important we focus on the issues here in gerry, think that's what you're saying. we have to put these differences aside and do his best for america. >> and tennessee republican ronald you are on representative hageman. >> hi. i don't think this country realizes how close we have come to losing everything weto have. these democrats ought to get a backbone and realize what trump did the last four years when he president he has back now. had he not got in there all you democrats would've lost everything you had. look at what he has done check and see what he has done. >> okay. let's go to rochester, minnesota democrat, jon euronext.
4:58 pm
>> yes. yesterday a local small business was rated here in rochester, minnesota home of the mayo clinic this local small business has employed two individuals for many years, they are here illegally but they were of value to skilled employees by this local small businesses been forced to shutter their doors. what is congress doing about this? we hear nothing about immigration bill, what's being done about immigration to provide for these small businesses? no our congressman said it was silent he's like a cockroach hiding in the darkness we hear nothing from him, note town halls. we are not hearing anything what's going to be done? >> jon, i was just in your lovely state last week. beautiful. my mother is from minnesota. we already have immigration laws on the books that address this.
4:59 pm
if you need to have foreign labor and there is a legal way of doing so through a variety of visa programs to the extent people believe they have to have that kind of labor i would encourage them to follow that law. i'm not going to apologize for enforcing the law. i'm not going to apologize for department of homeland security and our custom and border patrol et cetera enforcing the law. i'm just not going too. the challenge that we have is we have 12 million illegal aliens have come into this country over the last four years at a minimum, by the way those were joe biden's numbers i think the numbers higher. i think most people think the number is higher that's the official number that came out of the by administration. we have to be able to enforce our laws. we have to build a secure our borders and until we do that we are not going to be addressing immigration reform. i think the way that you are suggesting, we have to be able to enforce our borders. i am sorry that happened. i do not know the facts of that
5:00 pm
circumstance but i am not going to apologize for enforcing the law and i'm not going to sit here and promise were going to change it because of that situation. >> representative i just wanted to update on the situation with cyber trucks. this is the latest we got which is in the business insider state department removes a mention of quote armored tesla's from his 2025 procurement list replaces it with20 quote armored electric vehicles. that is the latest we want to be completely accurate about that. 400 million it says it will be by armored electric vehicles instead of specifically tesla's. >> like government oil inc. gas state i like the gas powered ones. republican of wyoming thanks much for coming in for. >> thank you, think you do a wonderful job with me. >> thank you. [laughter] >> c-span, democracy unfiltered. come funded by these television
5:01 pm
companies and more including comcast. >> are you thinking this is just a community center? it's way more than that. comcast's part with 1000 community centers to create wi-fi enabled so students from low-income families can get the tools they need to be ready for anything. comcast support c-span as a public service along these other television providers. giving you a front row seat to democracy. >> here is what is ahead tonight on cspan2. next a confirmation hearing for linda mcmahon to be the next education secretary then defense officials testify 2826 defense budget request. later congressional democrats hold a news conference in front of the veterans affairs department. now lindaahon, president trump's choice for education secretar testifies that a confirmati hearing. the topics include proposals to abolish the department of education, elon musk gentoo
