>> this is hazelwood historic house. morgan l. me of the martin family. they live in the house from 1839 1930s.he early on this was a strong and most of ity the -- most of the men who lived here, the families who lived here, sided with the british during the war of 1812. of 1812, the ar american fur company came into area, john jacob aster and took over. they didn't make life very easy -- for the british fur traders. and eventually all of this land foreclosed on by john jacob aster and many amazing live in the area lost all of their property, one john law. so this was his property originally. be then was able to purchased fairly inexpensively by morgan l. martin.

morgan is really remembered as a very important statesman as a very dill lly worked innocently to help the state then to territory and become a state. morgan l. martin was born in new martinsburg, new york and came from a wealthy family. he came to this area to study law. this was michigan territory when here.e and he was involved in politics. on a -- on the legislature for wisconsin territory.s own he helped to write that constitution. then he stayed involved in point of helping the state, helping write the constitution for wisconsin to become a state. he came to this area, i don't know that he felt that he eally needed to stay in the area, but he saw a lot of opportunity here. some actually met with other people who were just settling in to the area. -- they'd rt of

gotten involved in a lot of different things together, selling land. and so then he met elizabeth, area.ife to be in this so they ended upsetling here. also from new york, a wealthy family. ut her uncle was dr. william beaumont, the stomach surgeon. and he was at ft. howard checking on the military post here and she was here with and then so t her they ended up staying here. days, i think she felt like what had she done? she talked about that this was a would go ate area and back to new york and visit quite a bit. this was a social setting, of any importance who came to the area came here. she was good at entertaining and people feel comfortable.
