he said, i have a granddaughter bigger than you. she said, yes, but i'm older. he dropped her. but every press photographer had a picture. when the committee came back, they were chagrined. they asked the press not to print the picture. it was on the front page the next day. it was a symbolic picture of these once olympian bankers being humbled in congress. it had nothing to do with the circus midget, but it showed the attention was being given to his committee and the effectiveness his committee investigation was having. 64 >> in september, 1964, the president's commission on the assassination of president kennedy headed by earl warren released its findings to the public. the assassination archives and research center marked the event with a conference entitled "the warren report, a half-century of disclosures." next, retired u.s. army intelligence officer and former nsa executive assistant john newman discusses declassified documents and code names related to the c.i.a., cuba, and the assassination. newman is the author of "jfk and vietnam." this program is about an hour and 20 minutes. >> "the small secrets need to be

edition. and most recently 2011 "quest for the kingdom, the secret teachings of jesus." i'm honored to introduce dr. john newman. and he will introduce his assistant jay. welcome, dr. john newman. [applause] >> we live with the mic? good. i'm going to get started. i have a busy agenda here with you today. oh. ok. i just want to thank the aarc for inviting me to be here with you today and to acknowledge my long friend and colleague jay harvey who has worked tirelessly in the archives and has been with me for 20 years since "jfk and vietnam." thank you, jay, for being there. i could stand here at this podium and tell you what i prepared to say in the next hour and five minutes.

that there's difference between saying that something is true and proving it's true. stating opinions about the c.i.a. is easy to do, proving what the facts are is much harder work. we must begin with an underlying base of facts and details. from -- an evidentiary hierarchy must be built. any overarching theory of the jfk case must be derived from this hierarchy. the investigation of the kennedy assassination outside of outside dealy plaza, is the same as it is inside the plaza. it is all a crime scene. the boxes are still a crime scene. the source of each detail, like any evidence, must be accounted for from crime scene to court. the big screens in front of you today.

i ask you bear with me with the technical aspects of my presentation. i am going to try and move the chains down the football field a little bit today. i'm going to have to work with you on the devil in the details. some of the grunt work i will put in place comes from the first and subsequent volumes of my forthcoming new works on the pope was a my presentation will be devoted to putting a fresh evidentiary base in place, a base that spans from the oss and world war ii to the c.i.a. in the late 1960's. i when to do that by unmasking a few of the c.i.a. operatives who were behind multiple identities that bear heavily upon the kennedy assassination case. i'll have something more to say

about william kent, expand on what you've heard so far this morning. great presentation, by the way. fantastic. i'll be dealing principally with david philip and someone who is probably known to most of you as tony -- of these two, only phillips is a true name from birth. actually, the middle birth name of the person using the name tony was antonio. let me pose this question. why are the c.i.a.'s multiple identities important to this case? the answer is related to something that was said to me. "under many c.i.a. operations, there is another operation in play." i refer to these as dark operations. peter dale scott gave us the term "deep politics." webb. give us the term "dark alliance"

i will use the term "dark operations" or dark matter. the c.i.a. uses pseudonyms. more importly, they are used internally at the secret level. this internal use is imperative for c.i.a. counterintelligence. it makes it very difficult for moles to piece to gather sensitive operations. it is the foundation of what is called compartmentalization and tradecraft and the need to know. moreover, the c.i.a. reinforces the use of multiple identities with carefully crafted deceptions in its secret memos. these deceptions backstop and maintain differentiation between the different identities that belong to the same person. in three secret cables i will show you today, you'll be able to see how such deceptions are

used to convince those reading these cables that there are two people in the story, when they are both the same person. i've come to the view that without unmasking, the pseudonyms and multiple identities related to this case, in the end, it will not be possible to prove beyond reasonable doubt who was behind the assassination and how they got away with it. jay? >> the pseudonyms and multiple identities i have chosen to work on with you today were woven into a c.i.a. operation to recruit -- who eventually with the support of the kennedy brothers would be used in an operation to assassinate fidel castro. we will penetrate inside the cabello operation and identify who the people who managed to

were. from that base, we can build the evidentiary hierarchy that will uncover the dark is operation that was put in play underneath of the cabello operation. i do not believe there was ever a darker operation than this one. its intent was to play the jfk/rfk plot to topple castro back against the president and his brother. it success depended on castro being alive, not dead, after the kennedy assassination. castro, along with the soviet union, had to appear to be behind the president's murder with oswald as the shooter. it was the c.i.a. oswald operation to embarrass the fair play for cuba committee in the fall 1963. if you look at the committee's report that describes i t, it is

an inadequate ascription that betrays its true function as a top shelf cover operation under which something else was really going on. running underneath that supposed oswald fpcc operation was a dark op intended to tie oswald to the soviets and the cubans while he was in mexico city, whether he was there or somebody else matters less than tying the oswald name to the cubans and the soviet union. let's not forget that. i have dealt with the evidence for that part of the puzzle in a 2008 book. there is not time to go over that again today. in my presentation today, i will place the cabello operation into the adjacent area of the same puzzle. the operation to kill the president was in play underneath both the oswald op in mexico and

the cabello op. it is important to note that the castro op had an important additional ingredient -- the backing of the kennedy brothers. my presentation to today your going to hear a lot about four cubans. three of whom became best friends and to stephanie created them to create the d.r. -- and whose destiny created them to create the d.r. to overthrow the dictator batista. the group's leader was jose -- the second childhood friend was rolando cabello. and the third is carlos gonzalez, later assigned the cript a.m. whipe. jay, let's go to the next slide. cuba has a history of student opposition to dictators. during the early 1930's a group formed a secret organization to overthrow the machado dictatorship. next slide. it was in this tradition that in 1956 antonio formed the d.r. at

the university of havana. carlos -- financed the group through the profits of his jewelry business. cabello became the second in command. next slide. to this group of three i add a fourth. he was a jewel smuggler, who through family connections insinuated himself into this childhood three some and their secret d.r. his name was francisco pancho alonzo. he was assigned "a.m. concert 1." today, i will refer to him simply as pancho. easy to remember. next slide. the d.r. was active in cuba before castro. while castro's 26th july group was on the run, they launched an attack to assassinate batista. castro disparage the d.r. and call them cowards for not putting support of his own group ahead of their plans to topple the regime. castro was relieved when the

plot failed, after the leader was gunned down in the streets. the d.r. played a crucial role in the final 20 months of the revolution. after batista's flight, it was the d.r. who seized control. but then at the last minute, the d.r. leader at the time gave into castro. cabello was immediately alienated by castro's move towards communism. next slide. a c.i.a. man working with the c.i.a. in havana who appears in the files under the pseudonym andrew f. merton, had been using an informant. now he helped recruit cabello. that attempt failed when castro sent cabello to spain. cabello told his friends that if he did not get out of cuba right away, he would kill castrol himself. a remarked that found its way to the c.i.a. castro isolated and split the

d.r., which drifted into a void. many of its members were assimilated into the castro government. many disenchanted members remained and saw castro as just another dictator, and they organize clandestine opposition to his regime. within 12 months, they fled to the united states as political refugees. there, they readopted the name cubans directorate, d.r.e. the d.r.e was formed as a unilateral, psychological war asset of the c.i.a. stationed in miami. in summer, 1963, lee harvey oswald became publicly involved with the d.r.e. the real person behind me andrew f. merton identity -- leave the main titles. the main one for the whole conference. the real person behind the merton identity has been protected like fort knox for 50 years, even inside the c.i.a.

if this identification was no to the jfk records review board, they did not release it. they might not have known about it. i have seen no evidence that the

house select committee . a lone 2008 posting on one of -- one obscure jfk website picked

up the scent by an internal roadblocks after the assassination. the purpose of that road block was to -- the man from his long history in the cabello operation. i will get to that again after proving who merton was. it will allow us to solve much more of the puzzle, including the pseudonyms, nicknames, the true birth name and the c.i.a. crittenden for the person using the name tony. besides appear in cuba from 1958 to 1960, andrew merton appeared in a coup in guatemala. he reappeared again in the c.i.a. operations in mexico from 1961 to 1964. you have to have life events to associate pseudonyms that are separated in the files. the experts out there know who this assignment profile belongs to -- david atlee phillips. next slide.

good. among those good soldiers who fought fearlessly for the truth in this case, to whom we are paying should be at this conference, -- he spent time in my basement. i remember him well. fondly. gaten blazed a trail to light the way a philips involvement with oswald. we are fortunate to have antonio here this afternoon to tell that story for us. in the 2008 sequel to my oswald book, the c.i.a. counterintelligence chief played an important role in the plot to murder president kennedy. now i want to stand with them and add my name to his and others who are convinced that the c.i.a.'s top psychological warfare officer, david phillips, also played an important role. i'll begin to make that case by may -- by sharing some work i've done for the last three years on

the pseudonyms that belonged to david phillips. for those philip watchers out there, among his first c.i.a. crypt was a combination of -- i've never seen an actual crypt for phillips before. it has been widely known that david phillips used a pseudonym. the c.i.a. has not protected that identification and has released cables with the name phillips handwritten over the top of the name. you have probably seen these. phillips was andrew merton, and was behind more than a dozen other aliases. but the andrew merton/jack stewart identification is going to take us on a trail that begins with the d.r., continues with the d.r.e., operation, through the cabello operation and all the way to and through the 1963 oswald operation in new

orleans and mexico city, whose trail takes us across from the parts of the puzzle. the counterintelligence staff, william harvey's task force, and fitzgerald special affairs op. this trail will also begin to shine a light on another hardly know element at the top of the c.i.a. the p.e.p. staff. the psychological and paramilitary operations staff at the top. guess who came from there? howard hunt, david phillips, and a whole lot of other people. if i am disciplined, we can get to the p.t. staff in the question and answer session. to get there, we must be absolutely certain of each foothold along the way. we are working with a few people who appear to be many. the pseudonyms that need to be broken to put this puzzle

together. so, let me roll up my sleeves. break out my stubby pencil. and lay the evidentiary base for this part of the puzzle. leave that there. at this part of the presentation, we will be working with for documents -- the c.i.a. havana station cable, and two critical fbi documents. as you look as these memos, note the assignment of the person whose name the c.i.a. wants to keep secret. first in havana and later mexico city. these assignments match the assignment profile of philips. we'll get started with this c.i.a. havana station cable. my methodology -- i'm going to show you the doc. i am going to blow it up in 70 font, so that you can see it in the back row. if you buy the dvd, it is going to be there for you.

go ahead to the next slide. so, the key that you can see is the close relationship between phillips and carlos teppidino. after working together, phyllis ended up in mexico city. this excerpt shows just how closely carlos trusted phillips. we get to the 1962 defection op you can see the agency played this "any friend of merton" to get tepedino's help to get to cabello. this one shows that phillips recruited tepedino around may, 1958. next one. this is in miami. an fbi miami office. it is the first of two 1962 documents i mentioned. as we scroll down, you'll notice in the margin there is c.i.a. request to keep stuff secret. to this day, they don't want us to know what is inside those reductions. the unredacted material --

obviously the life story of philips. next slide. let's blow some stuff up. the redactor did not widen the reductions beyond the withheld words. it allows freaks like me to precisely count letters and spaces and fill in the blanks. let's do this one in which tepedino talks about his contacts in the van. it's got 13 spaces into which fits perfectly the name "dave phillips." this one mentions phillips transferred to mexico city. his name fits perfectly. but arthur -- was a deputy chief of station. guess whose name fits into the second hole perfectly? let's go to the next one. this is the devil in the details. this hoover memo to the c.i.a. is the second key fbi document.

it tells the same story tha originated in the miami document. as we scroll down, you will see the c.i.a.'s -- they want this stuff redacted. again, the life story belongs to phillips. this one here, this part is about tepedino's c.i.a. contact. 13 spaces for phillips and four for the c.i.a. this one about the change of tepedino's contact is just as easy. next slide. we will go back to the end of the other fbi document. just below the bottom the c.i.a. wants to keep the comparison being made between two people a secret. blow it up. let's fill in the blanks for this crucial gem. it is exactly 39 spaces. guess what fits in there.

dave phillips was using merton. perfect. this is another crucial gem. two holes containing six and 18 spaces discussing an identical physical description. guess which names fits in there perfectly? merton and phillips. this one about who contacted cabello in mexico city. 7 spaces for "the c.i.a." one hole for phillips and two for the c.i.a. you can see that tepedino who had been talking with the fbi, would be afraid that phillips would be afraid he would be working behind the c.i.a.'s back. let scroll down to the end of this cable. again, and tell us how close the

looks and tepedino were. it at the new contact that pancho will give him. the name harvey thompson. next slide. here's a c.i.a. document that tells us more about this harvey thompson. blow it up. thompson is phil toomey meeting withan anti-castro -- it mentions castro. next slide. this is an excerpt from the bay of pigs history. it tells us more about phil toomey. he was a close associate of philips and was a political and psychological strategist. next slide. this is a bunch of pseudonyms. merton. knight appears in hunt's books. next slide. we have got a bunch more.

lawrence f. barker pops up in mexico city. somebody asked me a question? douglas and bob lee and roberto has a lot to do when he is running conte aguero. john d. nadleman was used for the p.p. op staff. in radio and tv. and pickworth, first used in an interview. there is also a donald barton who is philips contact. let's go to the next slide. i meant to the roadblock set in place to decouple phillips from merton. this is the cable in which it

was inserted. next slide. we are going to blow up the top. at the top, a known pseudonym for phillips is negotiating with merton. because we know -- i just showed you be on reasonable doubt that phillips was merton and that merton cannot be a negotiating with himself, what we now have is a very valuable example to exactly how compartmentalization is used inside the c.i.a. at the secret level to fragment somebody who is playing multiple roles. back to the main conference sheet. let me summarize this part of my presentation by posing this question -- what is so crucial about the philips-merton

identification that it remains classified today? points to consider. eisenhower's policy was to replace both the -- in cuba and the leader in the dominican republic with less corrupt and more moderate leaders. it was the look who chose to recruit the d.r. for the task in cuba. why? because the d.r. was the most legitimate cuban revolutionary group that was not subordinate to the communist party. it was phillips and tepedino who began the operation to defect and recruit cabello the moment castro seized power. without the knowledge that. as mert -- that phillips was merton, it is the merton history that takes us from cabello in cuba to oswald in mexico city. after the assassination, phillips had to be disconnected from that history. i'll end this part of my presentation with this observation -- phillips had to leave cuba around january 1960. jim knoll the havana station chief needed someone who could

handle the d.r.. element that remained cabello, pancho and tepedino. that someone is the subject of the remainder of my presentation. just leave it there. previously, i mention the failure of tepedino and dave phillips to defect cabello in january 1959. when phillips left cuba at the when phillips left cuba at the end of that year, he took over the case. after they tended a student conference in switzerland in 1960, his father called him and warned him never to come back to cuba. so he came back to the united states using his temporary student visa. eight 1960, the remaining clandestine element in cuba sprang into action. they expose themselves by openly attacking the visiting soviet vice premier.

afterward, they had no choice but to flee to miami. there, they became the unilateral psychological war. next slide please. ok, good, we're there. william can't -- kent, also known as robert k true shard, also known as oliver h corvus 10, also known as douglas justin, reconstituted this remnant into the dre after working for phillips' political and psychological branch, he was sent to the jm waystation in miami to be the chief of the psychological warfare branch. his subordinate became a case

officer for the dre, which, as you already heard, ran a dark drop again to op, suggesting that i was walled's murder of president kennedy was part of the castro plot -- that oswald's murder of president kennedy was part of the castro plot. you have heard this before, but i'm going to put up there again -- house-led committee investigator told malcolm blunt, i believe, about a conversation we had had with the daughter of william kent, who told him that at a thanksgiving gathering, her father made the one and only comment he ever did about the jfk assassination, and that's it -- "oswald was a useful idiot." that's it. we do some quick history here. during tepedino pus temporary stay, kennedy defeated nixon and the election, and united states and canada broke relations with the embassy and the united

stations -- united nations of nevada closed. tepedino had to exit and return to the u.s., so he spent the first half of march 19 six he won handling this in mexico city. cubela just so happen to be attending a conference in mexico city at the same time, and tepedino again made arrangements with phillips. the file citizen for these activities that phillips was again martin. the second defection attempt failed, and cubela returned to cuba. a month later, the bay of pigs invasion failed, and three months after that, a cia stay behind agent in cuba failed in an attempt to exit ultra cubela. several days later, that same

cia agent was successfully exfiltrated. i'll lay out the cables and fats that reveal who he was in this part of my presentation this morning, but meanwhile, carlos tepedino, frustrated by the cia pus failures to defect and exfiltrate his good friend, truck contact with the cia and began giving his information to the fbi -- dropped contact with the cia. the kennedy brothers created a new committee in 1961 and charged it with overthrowing castro and developed a plan we know as operation mongoose. structurally, it became task force w, that it by the cia foreign task chief. in june 1962, harvey asked if he sent him to develop a new plan to defect cubela.

i'm ready to take you through a close examination of this new effort from -- this new effort and the key events that followed. were trying to some field conundrum of what is the birth name and the birthplace of the person who used the name's tony swanson and henry j sloman. next slide. the solution again requires observing how seemingly different characterless undergo identical events. you have to compare the life events and search against two or three to put them together. more specifically, i will ask you to try, ask obligated as this might he, to do this -- as we go through the next series of documents, please pay close attention to how many characters

experience the following for life events -- go ahead -- who hid in his home to avoid the cuban police the night before the bay of pigs invasion? who failed to exfiltrate cubela from cuba? who was exfiltrate it from cuba on 16 june? finally, who was the father to carlos tepedino? the cia often uses deception in the secret cables and memoranda to backstop the fragmentation of one individual into multiple identities. you will see such deception take place in the cables i'm about to show you.

they described the new effort to defect cubela with the help of his best friend. this was done to hide the true identity of carlos' father. from now -- now let's get to the part laying the base for this part of the puzzle. i'm going to break up this part of the presentation into four sections. the new jm wade defection plan, a surprise postcard from cubela to tepedino, key events to tepedino's dad, and finally, solving the sforza/sloman puzzle. we start with the renewed effort in 19 6222 defect and recruit cubela. this is the station's response to cia headquarters. this cable references headquarters cable, asking jm

wade to develop a possible defection op. it shows us how pancho wanted to play a major role and how he tried to use his family connections to bolster his case to do so. go to the next one. it gives us the jewelry business background not just for carlos that for the tepedinos. it talks about the role of the childhood threesome in the d.r. the talks about how great tepedino's influence is over cubela. here is where we need to stop and slow down and look at the influence. it's important to pay attention to the fact that the author of this cable is responsible for the following two statements about henry sloman. you do not see the name sforza on memos and cables.

first of all, this cable states, innocently, it looks like, that sloman knows tepedino's dad, which would lead anyone to believe that those are different people. second, it indicates that he hated -- hid in tepedino's dad's home. there can be no stake about the intent of this message -- henry sloman is not carlos' dad. finally, pancho offered to handle the pitch to bring tepedino into the ongoing defection op. this strategy immediately turned into an unanticipated debacle. next section. it's really great to have somebody run the slides for you. this section will deal with the

surprise postcard from cubela to tepedino. let's go to the next slide. this is the full section that tells the story of how the news that cubela's postcard circulated and the events that took place immediately afterward. the postcard story began when pancho heard about it from the surviving aishwarya family. acting impetuously, egotistically, and authoritatively, pancho ordered rather than asked tepedino to call him about the postcard. carlos did make the call. however, a big problem occurred when carlos refused to give pancho any details about the card. pancho now had to figure out something to save the operation and still remain part of it, so this time, he politely asked tepedino to call him back that evening.

when carlos did call back again, he had not changed his mind. he still refused to give pancho any details about cubela's postcard, but the jm wade station had anticipated this would occur and had arranged for henry sloman to be standing in the room during the second call. at this point, he took the phone away from pancho to talk with carlos. this cable gives us more details that are interesting, such as it was tepedino's dad who failed to pull trait -- exfiltrate cubela from cuba. the author is making two more deceptive statements about sloman. first, the cable tells us that sloman was presented to carlos using the alias enrique, and that this alias was known by tepedino's dad, so once again, he trying to reinforce the message that sloman and tepedino are different people.

over and over, these wave cables paint sloman and tepedino's father is different people, but we will soon see how the drafter of this cable made a crucial mistake. when we compare its exact details with the previous wave cable, we discover that the author of the second cable inadvertently gave us a crucial clue to the very thing being hidden -- the identity of carlos' father. i'll bring us back to that discovery. i want to finish wave 54 57 first. this cable tells us that the failed 51 exfiltration in cuba was the reason that carlos tepedino finally went to the fbi for help. in the second phone call, however, carlos' attitude toward sloman was completely different than this distaste for pancho. carlos immediately told all the details in the postcard from cubela.

it was them a sloman told carlos about the new cia plan that affects cubela and carlos asks sloman for his help to pull it off. go to the next 1 -- should be 16. he not only agreed to do it but also said he would do anything to help cubela. first of all, this wave cable further builds upon the evidence i was developing earlier that carlos tepedino knows martin -- merchant -- merton buy history name, and the reason the association was brought up again is to again facilitate the harvey thompson contact for tepedino. recall that tepedino said he would trust any friend of merton, and we know that harvey thompson is the psychological strategist. ok, now, let's go to section six.

we will begin this section by resolving life event 1 -- who was it that hid in the home of tepedino's dad, and solving it will open the door to the resolution of life event number four, the identity of carlos tepedino's father. as i indicated, we need to go back to this when here. the first paragraph of 545 seven. let's blow it up. remember it tells us unequivocally that tepedino's father hid in his own home. now, let's compare it with the third paragraph of 7476. this cable tells us unequivocally that it was sloman who hit in the home of tepedino's father. you put two together, and you

get the crucial slipup. if carlos' father hid in his own home and sloman is the one who hit in this home, then sloman must be carlos' father. in retrospect, it was the use of pancho to get to him that was a mistake. carlos' lack of respect made it necessary to bring in sloman and made it very tricky language to do it and maintain that fragmentation. but the discovery we made is reinforced in concrete in the next memorandum. "we are fortunate that as it finished its work, the assassination records review board released in full this copy of honcho's -- pancho's biography and do not quote this in the wave cables. let's blow up the note at the bottom. pancho completely gives away the great being given away -- henry sloman is tepedino's fado, and he hid in his home during the

day surrounding the they of takes invasion. no dancing in the in zone yet. the henry sloman name is only a pseudonym. we need more evidence to work with, and thanks to pancho haas huge ego, we can find them in the documentary record. now, we fast-forward downstream, 1969. the miami station has been taken over. he is using a pseudonym, by the way. he has a huge mess on his hands, by the way, made by pancho in the miami media, by making accusations against someone he calls frank. this memo gives us three huge clues about this frank. first of all, frank was pancho's case officer. second, pancho was directed by frank to introduce him as frank stevens, a professional gambler. third, frank is in regard -- is

enrique. so where does this leave us? we know that sloman, frank stevens, and enrique are pseudonyms for the same person, who is carlos tepedino's father. we are not even remotely done. we need to look at this memo that the cia special agent in charge sent after he was asked to investigate the accusations made in the mediocre -- the media by pancho against frank. we get another important piece of the puzzle -- pancho himself has claimed responsibility for the june 16, 19 d1 exfiltration of tepedino's dad. let's check out a couple sections. more pieces of the puzzle. earlier, emilio rodriguez americo had been pancho's case

officer, and he turned them over to frank. i'll come back to his case officer history in my concluded remarks. by the way, emilio is an important guy for a lot of other reasons. it confirms the june 1619 61 exfiltration of frank. next slide. another section of the same memo. it gives us the rest of the story about the person hiding in his home. the memo tells us that it was frank stevens who hid in his home. furthermore, he explains how frank's gambling cover had served him well because it enabled his servants to convince the cuban police that he was out of his house gambling the night before the bay of pigs invasion when he was actually hiding in his home.

this hiding in the home story further cements the pseudonyms used by carlos tepedino's father. next slide. at this point, i want to summarize the three key life events of tepedino's dad. he hid in his home, 17 320 1 april 1961, failed to exfiltrate cubela, and amri1 was exfiltrate in on june 16, 19 six to one. i have a lot of documents. i did not have the time to do that proof, so you can throw that out or take it on faith. i only have so much time today. go to the next section. ok, we are almost done. i have two remaining tasks -- first to prove that the above three aliases belong to tony's

wars are and second, to reveal the birth name of the person using that name and his alias as a nickname. let's go back to the cane memo again. blow it up. he states that pancho said jack stewart was his first contact during 1959 in cuba. that is incorrect. he actually said that phillips recruited pancho sometime during 1957, and we will add that detail to the big diagram at the end. -- the memo also tells us to more things about this frank stevens that he learned from pancho. one, frank was a cia supervisor in the cuban program. two, frank had earlier served in argentina. those details belong to tony sforza, who used a different

name in the church committee deposition, and that is his life event right there. as you can see, we are on the verge of adding him into the mix of identities being used by a single individual who is carlo'' dad. we have another huge piece of evidence to buttress this. this one was sent to headquarters where there was apparently some difficulty figuring out who frank really was. he gives away a crucial clue at the center of the puzzle -- the frank referred to by pancho was the subject of cia headquarters file 5347 two, and guess what? next lie -- we got it. task or is memo in 1962 about that. by the way, the name being

withheld at the top of the list is emilio. let's blow up the part we really need. the big news is that number i just mentioned for frank clearly belongs to tony sforza. now we have four names for carlos tepedino's father. next slide. now, if i can resort to the "wizard of oz" analogy, let's pull back the curtain to find the man in the control booth rejecting all these names. we start with this cia document about the 1965 polygraph of carlos tepedino. political this tells us that carlos tepedino is an adopted name and also tells us his true name before the change was carlos ignace you lopez -- ignatio lopez. is using his real name, antonio tepedino. we will get to that.

anyway, let's blow up this handwritten note, the cia handwritten note on tepedino's biological parents. let's go to the next document. this is from tepedino's 1965 personal record questionnaire, and i made a composite out of that, and i will blow up the part we really need to look at. carlos' biological father, ignacio lopez was born in havana, cuba, 1900, died in 1950. antonio tepedino is actually francesco antonio tepedino, was born not in ohio, but 1900 in salerno, italy. in a moment, i will show you from ancestry.com, the whole

four or five generations going back. but here, we might interject this rhetorical question -- why is a man -- i'm talking about carlos -- in his late 40's who is married and has a daughter getting a new stepfather anyway? all right, let's go to the next slide. i got one more document where the cia uses the name stepfather. it's the same trip i mentioned earlier, cubela going with tepedino to the switzerland conference. and it is the stepfather that makes the call. stepfather who makes the call. telling him not to come back to cuba. time to finish this puzzle. let's go to the next section.

good, just leave it. it's good. this is a net diagram. it summarizes everything i just told you for the last few minutes. there is a name at the top, and there is a life event that pertains to him as the sum of his experience in one line across the middle. the stepfather's relationship to carlos tepedino -- i cannot see the dates i have on there, but 1950's when that happens. underneath, you see the earlier recruitment of them all. this little diagram says a lot

of things, and i want to make some comments on it syria did -- comments on it. i will call them facts. in his deposition of the church committee, using the alias out for it -- alfred sarno, he did not say exactly what the chief of the cia station wanted him to do, but i have an idea -- there were three crucial reasons why he was wanted for that cuba assignment. first of all, someone was needed to fill in as the case officer for the leadership that phillips had recruited in 1957. second of all, the coming break with cuba was only months away, so he needed someone, a new case officer, to come in without state department cover. it would have to be deep undercover without -- and function as a cia stay behind agent. that was his gambling cover.

but what made francesco antonio tepedino uniquely qualified for this role was that he had known cubela for about 10 years, but also carlos tepedino was his stepson. that's why sforza was moved from argentina. he was actually called tony argentina -- left his family there and came back to run tepedino and cubela. rodriguez was handling pancho until francesco arrived. he assumed case officer status november 1960, and it was just months earlier that they had come out in the open. francesco antonio tepedino arrives, and pancho gets there eventually, still under francesco's case office supervision.

after the new cubela up -- op is under way, a new case officer takes over. even i have established that a new -- the true name behind his, i'm going to continue to refer to him as sforza. next slide please. just turn that clockwise. i have eliminated all of the children here and just ran back through five generations. last name tepedino, the first and middle name are always francesco antonio or antonio francesco, simply reversed every generation. the real sons you see on the left, antonio tepedino would have been antonio francesco tepedino, died in a car accident, and that is in that pancho file.

carlos is the stepson, the real sun in the same line of all those names died. he was in the jewelry business up in new york. in a car accident. next slide -- you can put a read this for yourself, like ringing some of the data in off of ancestry and elsewhere, of all these tepedinos, including the son that died in new york in 19 six e1. they all come from salerno, italy. -- including the son that died in 1961 in new york. next slide -- if we get to it, as i said, in the q&a, i am willing to talk to you and show you some stuff, a little bit about the history of the psychological warfare function up to the late 1960's,

involving, like i said, some of your very favorite characters in this case. go back to the main conference title slide, please. ok, leave it there. i begin my concluding remarks by returning to the cia's methods of using pseudonyms encrypted and to compartmentalize covert ops. the agency's use of such methods is no longer a secret. the fragmentation of these dark operations and activities of cia staff officers and contact operations into years ago is something we must defragment today. if in 1976 we had known the man behind the pseudonym, the cia would never have been able to it away with the outright perfidy of sneaking the fox into the hen house. you heard a totally fascinating

presentation about that just now this morning. to this very day, the cia still hides the entities of its officers who ran the operation to recruit and steer cubela into the plot to kill fidel castro. we need to identify them all, because in their midst, someone was running a more sinister operation. castro was alive and appeared to be using as wall to assassinate president kennedy. resolving these issues helps us peace together the true story of all is walled in the cia -- of oswald in the cia, and it enables us to make stronger cases for freedom of information act filings. let's go to the next slide please. for decades ago, a cia staff

officer handled the directorate of operations account for the agent's liaison. his role as a case officer was a dark op, and was withheld. he was a greek staff officer. he had been the senior case officer in charge of the operations. the time of their association with oswald, and the area launched its public campaign just hours after the president's and death. that campaign was part of parcel of the darkest operation i mentioned at the beginning of my presentation to play the plan to take out castro back against his brother -- the president and his brother. in the 2008 edition, i wrote

about oswald's mexico city trip and the possible role in the counterintelligence part of this lot, placing the world war iii virus into oswald's files in an ingenious manner so as not to let a balloon up until the day of the president's murder. it's a detailed plan and not some thing at an break into detail here. i did that before. spent a lot of time in that edition of the book. in addition to tying oswald to castro, and also implicated the kgb in the murder, too, and dave looked was heavily involved in several parts of this.

dan did such a good job talking about his movements back and forth, headquarters, mexico city, at the crucial time of the commit occasion, one thing he did not look at was the cables going back and forth between headquarters of cia and cable station thinking they are observing as walt -- oswald down there. those few days is when all that stuff goes back and forth. the routing slips covering those things, which were they would not show to the house select committee, ok, really helped inform us about who at headquarters, a name the record review board lifted reductions on that helped us know some of the people who knew about what was going on. when we put all the pieces of this plot together, we can see how this dark operation in play did more than achieve the death of jfk. it was a malevolent and diabolical psychological warfare plot convincing robert kennedy he got his brother killed and set the stage for world war iii, and in addition to that, terrorizing members of our government with the prospect that such a terrible event would diff out the world unless they

helped engineer a lone gunman cover-up. i want to take a side and address the possibility of a part two story. he may have been the case officer for another part of that same dark operation, and this also was hidden from the house select committee. remember that in june i did six to two, -- june 1962, they attended to use cubela in the plot to assassinate fidel castro. it was wilfredo francisco pancho verrano who identified him, and it was at this moment that pancho's case officer, tony sforza, turned pancho over to a greek case officer who was working in the jm wade station. they used tepedino and hissed at

debt to set up the recruitment of cubela --used tepedino and his stepdad. one might be justified in marveling at just how many greek case officers were running cubans at jm wade at the same time. the 1962 cubela op was carried out in conjunction with his participation at the eighth world festival of youth and students in helsinki, finland. one of his fitness reports, the one in 1962, is really interesting, indicating that he was the case officer for not one but two different hemisphere-wide student and teacher organizations engaged in political action propaganda and intelligence collection. among the items that jim last

miss put forward -- that jim azeris and forward -- that jim lazarus put forward is to determine if he was the greek case officer involved in these activities. next slide, finally, let me close with this observation on the warren commission 50 years out -- we began with a cover-up by the warren commission, as lyndon johnson used a threat of world war iii as a battering ram to create and use the commission. it was not a difficult endeavor. i believe it is no longer conjecture, but it is a fact. 12 years later, the house select committee and other committees of congress and senate had begun opening the doors of the truth. their collective works have helped confirm what most people had long suspected -- the murder of president john f. kennedy was

a conspiracy after all. the warren commission got it wrong. all of her stone's film "jfk" provoked the passage, and 4 million pages of assassination records were subsequently placed in the national archives. now we can read the transcript and even listen to the phone conversations that reveal how johnson could jolt senator russell to serve on the commission and exactly how lbj used the threat of world war iii and 40 million dead americans to force chief justice earl warren into doing what he had refused three times to do -- twice to robert kennedy and the first time to johnson, until confronted with that terrible threat, namely, to head up the commission that bears his name today.

50 years after the publication of the warren commission report, it has become clear that the longer we had to study the case, the wronger the commission's findings become. i'll put it that way. thank you very much. i'll be happy to take any questions you might have. [applause] >> ladies first. >> all right, thank you for that. very interesting. i am dying to read the rest of the story. i have a question because you keep talking about robert kennedy being behind the castro assassination plot, and i'm sure you read the testimony when he said he lied when he said that he had kennedy's approval, when he actually did not. i'm sure you read the report where the cia asks itself if they can state they had executive authority, and they answer their own question, not in this case, regarding the plots.

and then, there is the word of kennedy himself. he said he was the guy who turned off the operations. robert kennedy had told him he got in the -- in writing something from the cia that they would not kill castro. how does that fit in with what you are saying? >> i believe they were not going to kill castro. i am with you on that, but we could also cite a number of things that indicate the reverse. >> why would the cia admitted their own good document, for copies only, never supposed to be released that would not have been released otherwise with the cia says in its own, it's kind of like the kid with his hand in the cookie jar and says he did not seal the cookie, but then he goes and writes in his diary that he did steal the cookie. which are you going to believe? >> only that it makes eminent

sense to convince robert kennedy that the plan he had been part of was what got his brother killed -- >> i get that, and i agree that is a theory that works really well, but it works equally well it's it just is out there to convince the public of that, regardless. robert kennedy was shot down by his own grief. >> i need to make a couple of comments. first of all, while the air force one was still in the air, hoover got on the phone and told rfk that they had the president's shooter. oswald was his name, and he had been to cuba several times. would not say what he had been there for. when you think about what is going through rfk's mind, doesn't he go to somebody -- >> his first call was to the cia -- the emergency cia line and basically said, "did you guys kill my brother?"

it was later where he said it was one of years, but his first call was to the cia "did you kill my brother?" >> exactly. but if you think about this a little deeper, what is fitzgerald doing? >> david phillips, in his own book, says it was not desmond fitzgerald gave him the pen, but it was actually the case officer. said he did not happen october 20 two but happened october 20 9 -- >> what is the purpose of doing that in the first place? why, if we don't want castro to die -- >> no, they want people to think that the kennedys -- >> just playing along for a minute. put your other hat on for a second. it would be because they want that in the record that they wanted castro dead. >> they want that in the record? >> another operation on the plate which castro cannot die, he has got to live, so it mix perfect sense when you understand how this works to go give him a poison pen.

>> i am with you 100%. >> like there is a legitimate prop for cubela to kill castro. that's the way you have to look at this. >> i agree with 100% of everything you say with the one exception that i do not believe from the record that rfk ever authorized such a plot, but the cia needed to make it look like he had -- >> like i said, i'll give you either way on this. we could talk for hours, and were not going to -- there's other people in the room here -- about that part, so if we agree on everything else, were doing good. >> i only think it is important because rfk is dead and he cannot defend himself. >> i have read one of your books, dr. newman. lamarr waldron in his book last year on the kennedy assassination reported that

david atlee phillips recruited some of before he died to write his book "reclaiming history," which is like the book "case closed," written for an elite audience, primarily journalists predisposed to believe the government's version of events. informed people in europe and asia have known for decades the truth about the jfk assassination. what do you think that we and thousands of others before us have not been able to break through here in the united states to bring the truth to the american people? >> one of the main reasons is what i was talking about today -- if you cannot identify the characters because they have been fragmented into hundreds of pieces, you cannot put the story together, and it is not just done to confuse us. as i said, it was done internally, so it's very confusing even for people inside

the cia. one person to be at one desk, and three desks down does not know, does not have a need to know what that guy is doing. those guys are the only people who know what is going on, and how the staff infiltrates the director of operations and runs its own ops underneath ops and we have information. until you can do that, you do not know the story, and we are just kind of lost in space, trying to figure out who is doing what. when you talk about shots and ely plaza and doing that cited the case is one thing, but when you start talking about especially who in the cia might have known before the fact or what they might have done as part of it is difficult to do, until we get the cryps and pseudos and the nicknames of everyone out in the open, and we

need the documents of everyone to do it. a routing slips, stuff that malcolm blunt has been talking about, internal distribution -- those are things we need. without those things -- that the answer to your question. were not going to be able to get very far. >> thank you very much. when we were working at the committee, i used to have a running argument with abdul lakey, who insisted that we were looking for evidentiary proof, proof beyond a reasonable doubt, and i would always argue that in order to understand the cia or any possible cia involvement in the assassination, we had to analyze it as an intelligence operation and use intelligence operation data and analysis to reach an operational level of decision, which may never really come to proof beyond a reasonable doubt.

that was an analysis technique that me and dead tried to train ourselves to do in the short time we had with the documents we had to work with. what i'm hearing you say today is as an intelligence analyst -- and i really appreciate your background in that -- you think they you can go from the intelligence analysis level two actual proof beyond a reasonable doubt. do you think that from a legal standard, the work you are doing in the work that could be done at this point could actually rise to that level of not only probable cause but being able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt and actual involvement of the agencies in a conspiracy? >> it's a good question. you are better qualified than i am too -- i'm not a lawyer, right? but that is the idea. before a jury or before a judge is beyond a reasonable doubt. notwithstanding your point at

least, maybe robert candy had nothing to do -- i know of a lot of things, too, and i just don't want to have a long conversation about that right now. i was not my point in coming here today. but we start with that and then build that evidentiary base, and without that evidentiary base, you do not have beyond a reasonable doubt. you cannot go there. >> [inaudible] yeah, i think it gets back to the point made earlier that where you establish that someone under suspicion is lying, you
