>> who are you portraying out here? >> they were known as the irish volunteers. they were from charleston, south carolina. the project is so special to us, we thought it would be good to honor a unit that actually camped here in the charleston area. we really like to sit in. we kind of put two and two together for us. they were a militia unit from 1787 andeston issue, actually remained active until the spanish-american war. they were upper-class gentleman from the charleston area. the weather was a little bit different for them than they would have had. they suffered a great deal.

the russians were very poor and they suffered a lot from sickness. we actually found some diaries from soldiers who camp here. was one of the soldiers here, and we did research online for other diaries, so the internet has been a great source for finding information on these men. doing, they would put the canvas top on the hut, and they would put them over the head to keep the weather off, of course. would have anywhere from four men to five men in them. so we knew the dimensions. we actually made some photographs, and everything we we did 12 by 12 and we've looked at the type of photographs that we've seen of actual huts. everything is up and it to the time.

we are part of an organization from arlington, north virginia. .e are 300 strong most of the men are from central virginia. using this project, it keeps closer together. for a lot of us guys, this is probably the last hurrah for a lot of us. you can read all kinds of books on the battle of gettysburg or other battles, but very little is written about the life of a confederate soldier. doing this lens another aspect to what we do as far as private reenactments. doing the reenactment of battles is great, but for training the hardships and life of a soldier, it brings you more in tune with what you do as a reenactor. we like to think that we, i don't know, respect what went

before us, and i think that is a good way of doing that.
