tv's "american artifacts" visits museums and historic places. >> on the curator for the house of representatives, which means i take care of a lot of the artifacts, the artwork, the object that document the house's heritage. >> on the historian at the house. my job is to collect biographical information on data andto gather historic lists and to conduct oral histories. we answer reference questions in our office that come from on the , and we off the hill try to tell the story of the big,, which is this very very old institution in a way in which people can kind of connect with it at a human level. we do that through telling biographical stories or through clips from oral histories. forhis is a campaign poster shirley chisholm, the first

african-american woman in congress. i love this because it says "unbought and >> it is actually for a presidential campaign that she waged in 1972. she went to the democratic convention and rounded out about 10% of the votes. she is the first african-american woman to run for president and did it on a shoestring budget and had an admirable showing. she had a national reputation well before 1972. she is elected to congress in 1968 from a district that .ncompasses much of brooklyn she becomes very prominent in that campaign. her opponent in the general election on the republican, liberal republican ticket was james farmer, one of the great civil rights leaders then there is this back and forth between

these two and farmer really runs on the idea that brooklyn needs a man in congress and shirley chisholm, boy, she fires back. her campaign scene is like the one expressed on this poster. unboxed and unbiased. -- unbought and unbossed. she is the first to help establish the congressional black caucus in 1971 and she gains a very prominent committee assignment. she is a first african-american woman to serve on the house rules committee, which is the committee that pulls legislation onto the floor.

she also had a national reputation. she is someone who is very representswhich really a lot of the women who are coming to congress at this point. her colleague from new york city served a couple of terms in the house in the 1970's and would go on to try to be elected mayor of new york unsuccessfully. these were two women who spoke their minds. join american history tv tonight on the civil war as historians and authors talk about factors that impacted lincoln pot reelection campaign in 1864. they explore lincoln punch expansion of presidential war powers, his relationship with democratic and republican newspapers, and the impact of the soldiers' vote.
