"american history tv," will be live from selma and etc. and sunday, and we will show highlights of our coverage. here is congressman john lewis one of the leaders of the march, reflecting on selma 50 years later. >> two weeks ago, i was with congress and lewis. for the first time in my life, i walked across the bridge. what struck me is that when you get to the top of the bridge, how much you could see, and how much further there was before you ran into the alabama state troopers. it struck me that because my first thought was i need to turn around. i wondered, how do you deal with fear? have you deal with the comrades who are lost, the violence that you suffered on bloody sunday? how do you come is it individuals -- how do you, as individuals, how does the movement deal with that fear? >> you come to that point in your life, you have what i call

an executive session with yourself. you do some talkback yourself. i'm not afraid, back in 1961, we went on the freedom ride. when those of us left washington, on may 4 in 1961, the same year the president obama was born. we were prepared to die. some of us find notes in wills. if it took our death, as dr. king was said to regime -- redeem the soul of america, some of us were prepared. i thought it was going to die on the bridge. but i was not afraid. we had to continue to move on.

the guns. communist fire comes from everywhere. out there, the enemy is creeping in. he will try to overrun the american positions. the weighting is agony. -- the waiting is agony. then, the enemy makes his move. this is it, live or die.

the viet cong have had enough. they are nowhere to be found. 11 via minis -- via minis in a prison camp. they receive no medical attention. held by the viet cong for several months, their ailments range from open sores and skin infections to malnutrition. as well as deformities caused by unchecked broken bones. this man, a former viet cong who defected to the republic and was later captured cannot tell if his unspeakable nightmare with an enemy.

enemy. >> today at 5:15, house and senate leaders dedicate a statue of barry goldwater in the statuary hall. goldwater is called the father of american conservatism. speakers reflect that his five terms as a u.s. senator from arizona, is presidential nomination, influence on ronald reagan. that is today at 5:15 eastern. >> leaders from the u.s. house of representatives and senate recently presented the congressional gold medal to the world war ii first special service force. the american-canadian special operations team was formed in 1942 and helped liberate much of europe. the military unit was made up of 1800 servicemen. both american and canadian veterans attended the event at the u.s. capitol. this program lasts about an hour.
