silk slippers, odd pieces of fabric and the kind of treasures that maybe any of us would keep that were momentos of our past. they all belonged to dolley madison. you're at the historical museum. we're going to talk about our dolley madison collection. dolley was the wife of our fourth president james madison and probably one of our most popular first ladies. she was born may 20th 1768 here in gillford county to quaker family and lived an american life which took her to become one of the most popular figures in early american history.

she had seven brothers and sisters. after a stay at a farm here in gillford county they moved to virginia. eventually moving to philadelphia when dolley was about 15. it's there she married her first husband, a young attorney, and had two sons and experienced the tragedy of loss during the yellow fever epidemic when she lost her son and husband and her inlaws. she moved then later to the washington city where at the age of 25 she was introduced to james madison and she was married. we know that doll lee had an outgoing personality and sort of made up for the shyness of her husband during his presidencies. in this new capital city she hold receptions often called squeezes.

she felt that the dignitaries and the citizens alike were as important. she had the intuition to make people comfortable and it was often said that at a dinner you didn't know who was friend or foe. after james died dolley began to return on and off to washington. montpelier wasn't doing well and her sons debts were mounting and it was evident she was becoming destitute. she was able to sell madison's papers and a trust fund was set up for her by members of congress so that they could protect it for her as she began to age. when she moved back to the city as a widow and alone, she had a niece who moved in with her and stay with her until her death. when mrs. madison died she left what cash she had to both this

niece anna and to her son but she left all her belongings to her son. he began to squander those things and in his death there was an auction. anna and her husband took some of the money she had inherit and purchased as much of the madison items as they could. if you fast forward a little bit further, some of these treasures and items they passed to their daughter. document the items in hawhat we call part of our collection. the items that didn't sell or were measuringomentos ended up with their son and his wife in a home

in pennsylvania. when john passed away his wife became more and more a recluse. often saying that she had treasures of national significance in her home to neighbors and folks. eventually she passed away and when her body was discovered, the house was sort of trashy, full of wood uncashed checks and barrels of trash. after months and months of cleaning the house charles halipburn was making one more walk through. in the attic he looked over and saw an envelope with a green seal and walked over and noticed the date was an 1832 document. he removed a singalle nail and discovered a trunk and books and portraits stuffed up under the

eves and this was this treasure of dolley madison's things. a local group in greensboro formed the dolley madison association. their task was to acquire this collection and on her birth day, may 20th 1963 they donated the collection to the museum. since they came in in 1963 we had this story available to the public. i'm displaying different items from time to time but trying to include her life story from her birth to her death in 1849. some of the items that we currently have on display is a medallion that was given to mrs. madison in honor of james cooper and john quincy adams notes in his diary that of these awards

or medallions several were struck. only one in silver which was given to mrs. madison. a carved ivory calling card case that has a card enclosed with dolley's signature as well as that of her niece anna. some small cut glass perfume bottles and a pair of silk slippers that have tiny little ribbons that tie across the arch of her foot. the portrait is a john vanderling after the gilbert stewart portrait of dolley. the two dresses are the reproductions of a silk peach gown that she wore earliest in life and a red velvet gown which is intrigues both that it lasted and it was part of this collection. there's also a legend that's now accompanies this dress. we are currently in one of the

museum's secured storage areas where we have housed some of the madison collection that we want to share with you. some of the highlights from this trunk of treasures and this is one of our most special with intriguing legends as well. it's a red velvet gown. going to open it. it's protected under some special tissues and laid on a tray that was specifically designed along with some support elements as you can see. the gown is quite fragile and worn often. you can tell by the wear and tear. the date of the dress is probably about 1815 to 1820. we can tell it's in the empire style bauds of the high waist and the
