pacific trying to go away from this island of chichi jima. john: he was rescued by this submarine. a japanese plane saw his plane going in the water, and they were sending people to capture him, and the japanese say at that point they knew the war was over, that they sent a submarine from one downed aviator. that was it. they were done. president bush stayed in the submarine for about 30 days before he could get reunited with his squadron. there is a beautiful story about his experience, night watch when they were out on the surface recharging batteries etc., at times like that at night alone you know, the beauty of the pacific, he would think about things that are important to him, family, it is just the way he thought -- made that impression on me. but he was rescued, and at that

point nobody knew he would be president. we have all of his signed things in here. here. here's a painting, a drawing by one of our painters. there is a picture of him in front of his plane. there is a picture of him in his plane. we try to keep all of his things in here. this is from the submarine that rescued him. this is where we put our bush treasures for our mission from the beginning, which is what our founder -- we wanted to preserve a place where people could come and learn about what happened here, and also to remember the sacrifices that people made with their lives and just honor them. i am sure this is going to continue on. we have lost so many people that have been involved in it, but now we have new people helping. everybody who comes in gets involved loves it.

they see the value about educating our kids. >> all weekend, american history tv is featuring fort lauderdale, florida. between 1816 and 1858, the seminoles in 1957, the seminole tribe in florida gained. posted by comcast cable partners, c-span's staff visited many sites in their history. here on american history tv. >> the thing about the devils triangle and the bermuda triangle it was a regular navigation training mission and

they would take off, flight 19's, they would go east. they would drop bombs and then make a turn north and the 100 something miles and then return back west toward fort lauderdale. they never came back and nobody knows what happened to them. >> december 5, 1945, a team took off and that was a training mission of the day. there were five trainees, 14 men total. they were supposed to take off and go east and then there was a bomb, and they did do that. as they continued down east, they made that next turn.
3:02 pm
after that turn, the leader of the flight said, i think we are lost and we made a wrong turn and we need to go back before we made that turn. along the coast, another pilot was flying any heard this conversation and he said that was his call sign, and you guys are having some problems and he said yes, we seem to be lost in my compasses are out. i am sure i am over the keys. there was no way he could be over the keys. he initially identified himself as being out of miami. the reason was this was the first time the group had flown out of florida. they had moved up to fort lauderdale to continue the training. he was visually looking down thinking he was over the keys, which was probably a mistake.
3:03 pm
there was a front coming through. this is in december. the combination of all of these things he became very confused and lost a nobody could communicate with them because the pilot was flying self, he said he would come down to meet you guys back. the instructor said, no, we're fine. if he had done that, we would have found him because the radio transmission was getting worse and worse. he was going north out into the open water. he goes to the tower and said, i know are these guys are. let me take the plane out and find them. they would not let him. this all went on and they started to get dark.
3:04 pm
should have run out of gas around 11:00. nobody ever really communicated with them after that. they sent a rescue plane out there looking for them later that night. there is a big explosion in the distance. two ships. 14 men and 13 met on the rescue plane. the next morning, a huge search. never found anything. never found wreckage, nothing. it remains a mystery to this day and people are still looking and there is still a lot of mystery about what happened to him. usually, there were five trainer plants. so there were six planes and on this picture, there was a line of the six plants. the pilots and the instructor would go into the first floor of the tower and there is another

picture on the wall here. get the instructions and come out. so that plane did not go. otherwise there would be six planes lost instead of five. this was the place where they dropped their bomb practice. they did do that and that puts them on course. we have some pictures but that was a stick from inside the cockpit. and that was found in the ocean that they thought might have been part of flight 19 but it has not been proven true yet. he is still actively pursuing what happened to flight 19.

members of the crew, by looking at her website, have read we do not have pictures or information. walter was on one of the planes lost. there is also a logbook and pictures. all of this is just because we cannot have information on it. we get a lot of information from people because in a way, the museum, we all learn new things every day. it is not like we consider ourselves experts, but we look at everything and listened everything and put everything together. there is a letter from a fellow who went out on the training mission same day same time.
3:07 pm
he could not figure out how that would happen. all of a sudden he is over the city of miami about 40 minutes faster than he thought he should have been. another letter was about in the beginning of the day december 5, the training group out here flew out of the mid-atlantic in west palm beach. morrison feels like what are you doing? and they say they were coming back from a training flight and they hit the wrong airport. there is a french publication that wrote the first article about the bermuda triangle or devil's triangle. it is still unso
