in that particular parade, the troops were not allowed to march so what we are doing today is correcting that oversight. they will march in victory today down pennsylvania avenue. the descendents of some of the soldiers are also going to march. >> a small town but 25 miles east of memphis. he was listed in the color troops regiment in 1863.

>> president lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation. prior to that the south was winning most of the battles. the proclamation allowed african americans to fight with the armed forces of the union. you have fresh recruits coming in in 1863. the north and the union clearly again to win more battles and we think the colored troops had a major role in the overall union victory.
