we continue now with a look at the history of buffalo. of ju are at the home verett mash, a former -- nash. the reverend came to buffalo in 1892 from virginia. he had just finished a school, wayland seminary, and washington, d.c., and later moved to richmond, virginia, known there as the virginia union university. there was a notice on the wall. -- pastor wanted and he

answered the call. he came to buffalo in 1892. the865 congress passed first civil rights act in the united states. buffalo was one of the first , to asko file a lawsuit for school integration for the colored schools on vine alley. those members came out of their church. then there was the meaning of the convention that was held in western new york. it was a prime spot for civil rights and for the advancement of civil rights. nash was the person who was the in the community.

they were very active in to theg the movement meeting for the creation of the niagara movement here in western new york. that -- w.e.b. thought that the black community should be more outspoken and that the government policies were going awfully slow and that they have the right to do certain things and they wanted to fight for them. they organize what was known originally as the niagara movement to champion this call. to hit the streets, to organize throughout all the states and bring them through the organization that was going to bring about change and give their owncolor

first-class citizenship in the united states. unfortunately it did not last that long. 1905 andganized in disbanded in 1908. out of that came the naacp that then organized in 1909. that's why they say today that the niagara movement was the precursor to the naacp. nash became the spokesperson for them because as i said before his relationship with the larger community being able to speak the language and having a college education that was unusual for a baptist minister. -- his primary concern was how to build the church -- how to keep that together. those business views, he did not want the politics of the day to enter into the church.

>> welcome to the nash house museum. this is the home of reverend edward mash and franklin jackson nash. the significant thing about them . we refer to them as buffalo first preservationists. upstairs you will see how the at 1950,ked around 1955. as we walked up the back steps to the hallway, you will see a number of photographs from a wall. these photographs were a part of the reference collection. -- reverend's collection. many we can identify. so we cannot. coming to the end we see a picture of jesse nash junior and his wife. when they got married. below that is a picture from

when they were married inside the michigan street baptist church, with reverend nash officiating the ceremony. this part shows that nash had some of the more modern conveniences of the time. machine. many times young people say -- where is the dryer? i always point, here's the dryer. your close line and your close pins to hang them outside. we enter the back of the home, we are in the kitchen. most of the furniture in the kitchen belonged to the family. we had to replace the kitchen table, but everything else -- the dishes and everything here belonged to mrs. nash. mrs. franklin jackson nash was a very resourceful person. there were 27 years difference in the age between mrs. nash and her husband. to show you how resourceful she was, she cooked, was a very good

cook. she had an organic garden behind the house, a victory garden of course. in her sewing room she had her sewing machine. she had learned to sew by taking lessons from a large department store downtown. she sewed many have her own clothes and she made many of her own hats. cookedkitchen, where she , she used a stove that was both gas and coal. sick woman.a very she really believed in health and feeding her family correctly. 4-5 miles for -- every day, regardless of the weather. you know in buffalo that can be very
