military -- if they've not been for the south many of them has trained in the south. so their military training experience was often the first time that they experience jim crow laws and segregation. that was a harsh welcome to the american military for many of those servicemen. edward carter wrote to his wife about's and incidents in fort benning. he writes one was killed shot not getting off the white bus. killed in cold blood. one reason i don't have a town i would kill some of those whites and get killed myself. we are for a great cause anyway. usa land of the free home of the brave. these items that you see on display are really the crown jewel of this exhibit.

we have five medals of honor here, the nation's highest military award. is the largest grouping of medals of honor awarded to african americans since there a warning in 1997. now 1997 was not too long ago. it took until 1997 to recognize the achievements. that you -- that are associated with these awards read like something superhuman. only one of the seven recipients was still living in that was vernon baker. awarded thehe was distinguished service award.

it was at that he was not even recommended for the medal of honor because it was known that that would not even have been considered for him because he was african-american. [applause] [applause]
