the pacific ocean. while this exhibit here is focused on the uss tang in particular, is focused on the fifth patrol, the most successful in any in history. on the fifth patrol, tanks set out on the september 24 through october 24. she sank more ships than any submarine ever did and almost doubled her own personal record. by the end of the fifth patrol, the tang sink a total of 33 enemy ships. the patrol ended with her final torpedo. tang encountered a japanese ofvoy on the of the 23rd october. he employed his familiar tactic of surfacing in the middle of the japanese convoy and

attacking at night. unfortunately, he hit several ships and damaged one of particular. it was thinking but it wasn't sunk. it was heavily damaged and just kind of sitting there. he fired his final two torpedoes and on the final torpedo as it left the tube, it clear to the boat and got several yards ahead of the submarine and the submarine is cruising on the surface now. as the torpedo clears the submarine, it starts to turn around and boomerang. the guys on the bridge stop the submarine and see it. cain being one of them. they could see the torpedo and that it was coming right for them. it was coming back right toward
