zero victory in the new hampshire primary over bob dole. he hoped to continue his momentum in the south carolina primary with the endorsement of phyllis shapley. won as later senator dole decisive victory in south carolina and in every state except one on his way to the republican presidential nomination. involved a loss incumbent bill clinton in the general election that fall. this event is about half an hour. [applause] good morning everybody. i am phyllis schlafly, president of the eagle forum, a national conservative pro-life organization. i'm happy to be here today to endorse the candidacy of patty cannon. -- pat buchanan.

beforeo get on the plane i knew the spectacular results in new hampshire. i'm happy to be here and i think cap is the -- pat is the one candidate that can win who do respect the fundamental individual right to life of the unborn baby. [cheers] what the pro-life movement wants is a president that will be to pro-life with bill clinton has been to pro-abortion. we know that pat will be that man because we are sure he will resent clinton's five pro-abortion executive orders, he will sign pro-life legislation passed by the congress, he will appoint judges who understand why roe versus wade was wrongly decided. we are tired of those who equivocate about this issue talking about pro-life will not do anything about it. [applause]

[chanting] go!go, pat, >> and we know when he debates it, clinton, and he will do he is the one man who can do it because he speaks of the conviction and from the heart on this issue. is not just the pro-life issue, but all those other issues where he offers us a real choice, not to go public clinton. -- not an echo of bill clinton. you take any of the other issues, the candidates are hopelessly compromised on all the other major issues of the day. i was appalled to read yesterday morning that the once leading candidate said he did not realize that jobs were the big issue in this campaign. jobs are the issue. pat buchanan offers us a real

alternative. he takes all the important issues, whether it is jobs, tax increases, gas, nafta, the mexican bailout, foreign aid, the appointment of judges, term limits, you take them all and patty cannon offers us a real -- offers us a real opposition to bill clinton he offers the real alternative. i think those that supported phil gramm will come and join the buchanan campaign. pat is the man. he is the one who can win with your help. [applause] >> ladies and gentlemen, the next president of the united pat buchanan.

[cheers] [chanting] go!o, pat, mr. buchanan: i gather the ones that are plotting the press. [laughter] we will have a press conference now and this will be for the press questions. before we begin taking questions, let me say i am honored and privileged to have the public endorsement of the first lady of the conservative human, phyllis flatley. -- phyllis schlafly. [applause] she is the individual who more than any other stopped the

feminist supported equal rights amendment when it was well on its way to victory in being -- in the u.s. constitution. she mounted the initial effort, then joined by others and is one of the great achievement of our cause. let me say in addition -- [applause] i will move to the press questions and i apologize for being late. some of our friends were sleeping out of the park because of our advance were coming down here. i apologize for that. what we have got up here is a sign that the economic conservatives and the social conservatives are coming together. the grandfolks are moving together behind pat buchanan. grahm the entire organization of minnesota and maine. it beat bob dole 4-1 in a straw poll.

significant slices of the leadership of the grahm organization moved our way. phil gramm captured eight delegates in louisiana. three have already declared for us in new hampshire. campaign is bringing together both the social and economic conservatives. let me talk about the great battle coming in south carolina 10 days from now. i think we have a fighting chance to win south carolina for several reasons. we are with south carolina on all the great issues of the south carolina republican party. the issue of right to life. there is no stronger right to life candidate left running in the republican party than pat buchanan. i am the only right to life candidate who has committed to keeping the right to life plank and the platform, taking a pro-life running mate, to appointing justices double-overtime road v wade. [applause]

neither senator dole or lamar alexander has made such commitments. that is why it is imperative that the right to life movement united now. united we win, divided we cannot. it is time for them to unite. the same is true of economic conservatives and those of us concerned about the surrenders of american national sovereignty and the loss of jobs in american industry when those jobs are being exported abroad. no industry has suffered more from the beltway betrayals and these trade deals in the textile industries upon which south carolina has so long depended. , and i dod yesterday not have the material with me, that another textile mill has been shut down. 65% of the employees were minority americans. their jobs are being sent to mexico.

these are some of the voiceless men and women in this country who have no one to represent them in washington because the hierarchy of both parties really argues of a half of these trade deals which are done for the benefit of corporations who want to shut their factories in america and move them overseas. how long does it take? on monday andp was quoted in the "new york wees" as saying listen, really did not expect this to be an issue. we do not plan for it. is issue of jobs and economic insecurity was not our game plan. as i have said on cnn just a minute ago, they had that movie "sleepless in seattle." they could call this establishment in washington "clueless in washington." [applause]

mr. buchanan: i have traveled this country. i have been home one night in the past two months. i have gone to one plan after another. the toy factory in dyersville. the textile plant. all of america you have gone were everyone has gone. you look into the faces of the women and the men who lost their jobs, the wilderness, they don't understand what is happening. they don't understand what the american dream is slipping away. they work hard, raised their families, they saved. all of a sudden they were locked off and dropped flat. they will never again have as good of a job as they had that was exported overseas. in both parties in washington dc, at the hierarchy level, they don't understand this. either that or they do not care. the reason we are doing well is i do care about these folks. i do represent these folks. i will be up in washington.

i will be the longest in the white house for the people who cannot afford to put a lobbyist on k street. this is why our campaign -- [applause] what is their answer? we have a program to make america the enterprise zone of the western world. cut programhe tax of ronald reagan with the trade policies envisioned by the founding fathers. it puts these two together. is free-trade with free and fair traders like canada, england, europe if they will fix some things, australia. if the chinese, his government imposes a 40% tariff on us and steals our intellectual property, fires missiles at our friends, and at the same time it is selling is five times as much as we are buying, what is wrong with the president saying listen, i want a free and fair trade deal for my country.

if i can't do that, they will punish us. if these guys are running the situation in the cold war ronald reagan was in the white house, we would all be speaking russian now. [laughter] this is it. we have a very sick instigated, complex policy. they will not be this by calling his name or running a lot of negative attack ads. those are really a substitute for ideas. with that introduction, i will be happy to take your questions. i think we ought to restrict the questions to the members of the press who have come in for what we billed as a press conference. i will be happy to take your questions. where you a supporter before? but i letot announced

it privately be known i was thinking he would be the best candidate. he is out now. all of those who are graham supporters to come support patty can. [applause] --pat buchanan. you have described senator dole as an archer daniels republican. with the financial support you have gotten, will do say being called a project republican -- roger milliken republican? mr. buchanan: he held a small fundraiser for me or we collect about 1% of what phil gramm collected at his biggest dinner. when that plant of his burned down in georgia, he flew in there and they thought it was going to move to mexico. he told the workers in that plant we are not moving to mexico. we are going to rebuild right

here in this town in georgia. i will get the name of it in a second. mill worker he had in that was a medially given the first opening and any jobs he had in his other textile mills in the area. a couple of dozen percent to london to work in his mills over there. roger milliken believes in looking out for his workers. he considers them members of the family. that is what a good boss and employer does, like that fellow in massachusetts. mr. fierstein did it when his steel mill had problems. this is the type of capitals leader i admire and respect. my argument is not with full to do well, not with those that make a lot of money,, folks were wealthy. yourgument is with the idea don't consider workers as family and you start considering them like interchangeable parts and you don't another way at&t did. less well off 40,000. f 40,000.op of

my argument is with corporate butchers and it is with corporations who no longer feel any sense of loyalty to their employees, any sense of loyalty to their country, who worship only the bottom line on a balance sheet. is these folks i have a disagreement with. one other fellow in there? >> i have two questions. what message does last night's victory say to the establishmneent in washington? as the campaign season becomes expectverse, how do you to compete with candidates who have more resources, at their disposal were better organized, and have better organization on the ground? mr. buchanan: um... [laughter] they are coming at me.

the message that was sent last night i think is listen. >> the people are behind you. mr. buchanan: let me answer the question. i think the message that comes out is basically this. the people of this country want to hear the issues discussed. the economic issue at the core of this campaign is really knawing at the soul of america. of good paying jobs and oversees the corporations that then build factories, export products in the u.s. and kill other jobs. is economic insecurity of the american middle class. people want this addressed. they want their concerns expressed. they want ideas for how to get the standard of living of americans rising again. how to get real wages going up again. they have been going down. we know people are doing well but these have been going down.

they want someone with ideas and agenda to deal with it. i presented more ideas than anyone else. most of the others -- what are they doing? they call me names. they call me names and they run attack ads and say pat buchanan is going to give up nuclear weapons like lifesavers. [laughter] it shows the hollowness at the core of the washington establishment. senator dole's comment that this is well not wait -- this is not what we planned. it shows how out of touch washington is. how out of touch for america. some of these guys -- [applause] party,g to a wonderful the republican party. i've been part of it for 30 years. they are wonderful people. at the top levels they are so out of touch in washington. the state department will have to organize orientation trips for these fellas they got into the country and meet americans.

they are out of touch. [applause] let me talk. organization and money. it's an exaggeration to say that we are weak in that department. in the third and fourth quarter i raised -- january and february, each of those quarters i raised more money than any other candidate except senator dole. i've got more matching funds than any other candidate from the third and fourth quarter and the first two months than any other candidate except senator dole. we have much more than lamar alexander. last week $500,000 in small contributions landed in our headquarters. that was after iowa. after new hampshire where the impact will the x financially greater.

we expect more and more money to come in. next in terms of organization, how can they say we are not organized? $400,000 to our $60,000. bounty -- bob dole, we beat him to do one. -- two to one. him withization beat 13 delegates. in iowa they said they all have better organizations than pat. pat close to 50 point get with senator dole to three points and he outspent us five to one. we demonstrated that money not only can't buy you love, but money is no substitute for ideas, ideals, passion and conviction. none. [applause]

but i said it long ago. you cannot by iowa. you cannot by new hampshire. you cannot buy america. and you cannot buy south airliner. where is lamarr? i have three gold medals in a silver -- and a silver. lamar has too little bronze medals in the is attacking me today. where is he going to get his money? >> can i follow up on that are here? with the political establishment going to bob dole -- mr. buchanan: no. the worst maneuver you can make in the middle of a battle history verse the front lines. the establishment runs from bob dole to lamar alexander and it will be cut to pieces. it will be perceived as the andtics of expediency perceived as folks were desperately wanting to hold onto power and privilege and stand

for nothing. i admire a lott, of what phil gramm getting congress. he's been one year saying pat buchanan is a good conservative but he cannot win so rally behind me. and bob dole is our problem. we have to get rid of dole. as soon as phil gramm got beat he ran to bob dole and said he's a great guy and the canon is the problem -- buchanan is the problem. it looks like the washington game all over again. i will be honest. of local production. i think the political establishment probably know my prefer lamar but they cannot vote for him. they will stand behind senator dole because they all endorsed him. he came in first in iowa and second in new hampshire and lamar came in third in both. i think they will stick with bob dole but i urge lamar to get to

arizona. i think senator dole has the resources and the national polls he leads in. only authentic conservative left in the race and i'm the principal challenger to bob dole for the republican nomination. i am the one guy that can be bill clinton. [applause] they said you were more about -- washed out with the south carolina gop. -- why70 gop visitors are so many gop leaders visiting? mr. buchanan: the establishment came to the conclusion when bob dole was a 55% and we were down there scrapping around in single digits that he was going to win. they said let's get on board the winner and they all got on board. the train is not moving. [laughter] [applause] meanwhile there is

the dixie express coming through here. [cheers] [chanting] >> go, pat, go! primaryen now and the do you feel like people will be bringing more south carolina leaders or fighting? mr. buchanan: i have said some critical words with the republican establishment. i do believe it is out of touch. many of these people in that menblishment who were young like i was in young women when i got into the conservative movement with barry goldwater. and we got beat badly. many came to washington with richard nixon. i served in his white house for six years. lamar alexander was there for two years. i believe i have maintained in the years the conservative philosophy and convictions and beliefs.

many of these folks have grown accustomed to washington. they become part of the establishment we once came to do battle with. they began to express that they are part of the culture now. all the big money and they are now lobbyist making half $1 million a year to represent foreign governments. they no longer have the prior energy and use we had only came. i don't dislike this fellas. they were friends of mine and i would say they are friends of mine now. that they are out of touch. all i am saying is we talked about the pitchforks. [laughter] i am holding out this possibility. if i win the nomination, i will sit down and talk with them. i will keep the door been to my campaign to anyone who does not slam the door to us. our objective is not punitive. it is to broaden the base of the republican party.

richard nixon and i put together over six years what we call the new majority coalition. it was the greatest coalition put together since the new deal. we had 49 states, 60% of the voters. we all know it happened with watergate. and i helped ronald reagan put together a 49 state 62% victory. that is what i am looking for the future. we have to open the party and bring in these working middle lks.s oaks -- fo they believe the country is going downhill and they want to be with us. we have to address their economic concerns. they are sitting up at night looking across the table saying i can't believe it. they let me go up to 20 years. when we going to do now? we have to move out of here. with the assembly's to put the kids in school. what happens to the health insurance? if we went to address the economic concerns, we don't deserve their support.

i am addressing that. i just told my friends in washington stop calling me names. you know me from way long ago. we had dinner at thousand times. address the concerns of these folks. keep your door open and i will keep mine open. we will bring them home. [indiscernible] what is your relationship with america's labor unions? withstand you take with them? mr. buchanan: i was a member of the newspaper guild and after. -- aftra. i believe unions have played in a norma's role in american history. and enormously positive role in evil do not have a living wage. they like a lot of corporate folks got out of touch in the 70's.

let me say this. when the issue is whether boeing aircraft off to place a new factory in china or keep its plants in the united states and these aerospace workers are out there walking around striking, my heart is with the workers striking. it is not with the guys moving the plant. this is where i disagree with the washington republican establishment. i had disagreements with the unions. i believe in the right to work laws. i have trouble with right to work laws. they are going to force me to join a union and i said no. dueswould force me to pay for a strike did not believe in in st. louis. i set a knock tang for the new york strike. -- i am not going to pay for that new york strike. i am not in good standing among union card. i believe in supporting the unions when they are right and they are right in the boeing case. >> in south carolina they recently [indiscernible] -- they have more strength.

are you going to be involved with them at all? mr. buchanan: i welcome folks union and nonunion. you tell them this. on the main key issue which is keeping your jobs in the united states and creating new jobs here in getting your pay going up again, making sure the family standard of living is rising and providing economic security or you can raise her family in one little community your whole life if you want to, i am with you all the way. thank you very much.
