right. bill johnson was, and still is, my best correspondent. i wanted to see things through his eyes. sortted the column to be a of case history of what actually happened to bill. his first letter came shortly after he arrived at boot camp very he found that it was not easy when they take away all your clothes, everything but alongoothbrush, and push in an assembly line and check you for everything under the run. it wasn't easy for bill, or the thousands before him. or the thousands of all races and creeds who will come after him. ouch. two down and seven to go. he found shopping quite easy in the navy.

in the old days, it is to take him longer to get a suit. it was hard to make up a mind whether he wanted the ground suit dusty brown suit with the check, or the gray suit with besides. everything comes in standard collies and patterns -- colors and patterns. the salesman by discounter won't take no for an answer. probably never again in his life will bill receive nine suits of clothing and everything that goes with it in 20 minutes. >> your members of the new company, number 510. company 510 is about the greatest collection of men in boot camp. line, payp out of attention and obey orders. you shave and shower every day.

what is an ensign? >> well, you are. are.our -- both of you bill never worked so hard in his life. every minute of the day on the go. he soon found that the training was tough. it had to be. the game is too important to lose. gradually, company 510 got squared away, and their chief stopped calling them knuckleheads. they looked navy.

it wasn't all tough. their worship service, when the biggest balls and time. and noise. you never heard noise until your ventilation circus -- until you have been to a ship circus. happywas ping-pong, and hour. and there was some work that was not so tough. there was. refuse -- who could refuse an invitation to the debt? another thing bill thought out was that the navy has rules, rules that must not be broken. furthermore, these roles applied to everyone. , andis navy discipline

discipline is the foundation of teamwork. bill didn't exactly like swabbing decks, but he had company. to, andswabbing decks pedro had time to think it over. he got a course in sweeping, and he never forgot the lesson. after that trip to the brig, bill got wise. he found by reading the rules of that they were real responsibilities, and only him but for the rest up to the very top. else,nd out something something that opened his eyes to real teamwork, something about stewart's mates and their place on the team. for his distinguished
