which is devoted to the connections between early american history and pennsylvania history. it know your american history, you know that the early part of colonial america took place in pennsylvania. before we focus on this particular component of the exhibit, let me tell you a little bit about the overall exhibit. this was an exhibit we put together for the 50th anniversary of the state to outum busy, to bring stories about pennsylvania that we thought most people would expect to find in the pennsylvania state museum. for example, we have a section about william penn. we have a section about pennsylvania industry, particularly the steel and coal, and iron industries. then we have a section called "made in pennsylvania" in which we feature a lots of products that are guest will recognize are made in pennsylvania like hershey candy bars. there is a very close connection

between early america and early pennsylvania. in this room, we have a number of a rebels of that. i would like to start with the case over here, which is about the french and indian war. the wrench and indian war was, for many people, the precursor to the american revolution. much of it was fought in pennsylvania. s wei think one of the thing remember about the french and indian war was the gentleman at fort tip, ended up in some starting thes the war. that of course was george washington. many historians would trade the beginning of our problems with england's back to pennsylvania. these are all parts of artifacts that have been excavated from

war sites. this war was fought in 1750/ 1760's. some of these are native american, and some are pieces of weapons used in war. one of the highlights of this small it a bit are the three lags mounted around -- three flags mounted along the walls. we believe this flag crossed the delaware with george washington, because it was the first pennsylvania regiment of the colonial lines flag. flag wasnow that the surrendered at yorktown. there are very few of these left , and this one literally goes from almost the beginning of the war to its conclusion. as you can see, it's not in great shape, but it has been such a treasure that we have spent a lot of time conserving it. soldierl units was the

netting a lion, but the important part is the latin, which you can barely read, but which says "we will not be conquered." we have a model of independence hall here for a couple of reasons. one is to remind people that the declaration of independence was written here. hall served as one of the early capitals of the new country. when of the points we try to make is that after the constitution was written, it had been a responsibility of every generation to continue that pursuit to make a perfect union. a significant example of that is this flag, which is the flag that stood behind lincoln when he gave the gettysburg address. and that lag came to us through the secretary of state's right after lincoln had given that significantery

address in american history. of coarse, gettysburg was considered the turning 48 of the civil war. you can see there are flags behind them. this is the one that had the simple of pennsylvania on it. this flag is of particular interest to me, because i had a family member involved in the in what is known as the whiskey rebellion. it was the first challenge into the authority of the american government after alexander hamilton passed a tax on whiskey in 1791. number of farmers in western pennsylvania, upset about the tax -- and the reason they were upset about the tax was the roads in pennsylvania through the mountains were not very good. the only way they could get their grain to market was to convert it into whiskey and into alcohol and then ship the alcohol. for them, this tax became quite

a burden. in americanne time history whether president of the united states, george washington, actually led a troop of militia into the field to put down a rebellion. by the time his troops got there, the rebellion was already over. but this flag is unique, because one of the participants wrote on it in ink. this quilt was used in the western expedition of 1794. rather than a design being painted on it, it was stitched together the way a cold was made. we found out the man who owned so heas an upholsterer, was probably a good seamstress as well. we hope visitors who come to this gallery recognize when the u.s. constitution was written, it have the phrase, "in order to make a more perfect union."
