dating, they would not use that arase, according -- courting, man and a woman were expected to be chaperoned at all times. if you are seen a young woman or man he would not be left alone. that would be very inappropriate. that would lead to all kinds of rumors and if somebody fell down on the job -- no. chaperoned at all times. if a man wanted to write letters, there was no email or text, no telephones for most of this time as well, so if a man wanted to write letters to a woman, the only way to communicate with her outside of chaperones, it is the only way to community privately with her. you cannot communicate privately in prison because you are chaperoned. if you wanted to write her letters you are expected to ask for permission first, to write letters, that is a little too
