the u.s. entry into world war i. up next on american history tv's real america, a 1977 documentary about world war i's harlem health fighters. soldiers of the 359th u.s. infantry unit. in all-black unit that served with the french army. they were served to the french army because they needed men and rifts --e americans refused to serve a lot of african-americans. it is told by world war i veteran himself or it -- himself. -- in aoys and up will platoon commander by lieutenant pratt. they're holding out a certain , it seems that we always had listened posts. >> if you don't know what a listen post was, it is nothing like korea or vietnam.

the troops are hold in a trench. every night they have a post set up, maybe 200 or 300 feet from the main body in the trench. every night they put two men out there just to listen and warn us if there is a sneak attack. >> of course they were doing the same thing. on this particular night, henry johnson, who was one of heroesater theories -- when the germans attacked them listen post. approximately 24 germans attacked. almostslugged immediately and johnson fought them off. around, he he swung do for it -- he defeated the 24
