milling company. it is one of two locally owned businesses that have been open -- that have been in operation for over 100 years. come with us as we visit these two companies and learn about their history and why their to shawnee remains strong. >> it has very interesting history. 1891, south of the town here, across the river a man came and built the wooden mill. he was there until 1895, and then the town wanted to grow and be prosperous.

they encouraged the man to bring the mill to the present site that is now in 1895. shawnee became a town. my grandfather came along, he stayed with his family are the shawnee. through the years, granddad worked in oklahoma city. he and my grandmother purchased a wood barn in 1906. it has been in our family since that time. i am the third -- my son is now the fourth generation to be president of the company. >> we are at roundhouse overalls. we are the largest maker of bib overalls. that is because we have a lot of brand loyalty. we have four or five generations of families wearing our overalls. people's whose father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and even great great grandfather wore our overalls. we started in 1903. that is four years before oklahoma was a state, back when it was indian territory.

we started by making overalls for the railroad line. shawnee was really a boomtown for the railroad industry. here in this photo, you can see these are the railroad employees. there are over 1000 working on the repair station. a roundhouse is a repair station for railroads that will have lots of railroad turntable track so they can move the different cars into different parts of the roundhouse and work on them. this photo, you can see where their roundhouse railroad repair station was. the actual roundhouse building, the original building in 1903 was down here. here you can see the original building, this is from the 1920's.

the roundhouse logan -- the rent has logan is on the side of the building there. -- the roundhouse slogan is on the side of the building there. we stayed downtown until the 1990's when it got too difficult being downtown in a very old building. that happens all of the time. it goes through on hand. you take them to the third floor and then back down to the second floor, and then back to the first. it became a nightmare trying to get the production made. we moved out here in the 1990's. we were able to expand and hire more employees and make it much more profitable. >> in the 1960's, my grandfather but the company.

it has been in our family since then, but it has always been locally owned. there is that connection, even though it hasn't been in the same family, it has only -- it has always been in shawnee. keeping the employees here has been very important. having that network of people that know how to make bib overalls are some of the most important factors to do this. we have some employees who have been here over 20 years. i would say the connection between the railroad and roundhouse is strong. we had those railroads here in shawnee.

over time, there is less and less. railroad employees, the employment has dramatically decreased. there is many fewer people riding railroads. there is not much of a connection at all anymore. you still see people wearing overalls. anymore, people just where those overalls day to day. that is what they wear. they really have no connection to the railroad anymore. that is how it began. now we see people wearing overalls just as part of their day to day where. -- day to day wear. >> our facility has grown over the years. our newest facility is this deal structure here, which holds about 530 bushels of wheat or corn. then you see a concrete

structure which is our c elevator. altogether, we have 2.5 million bushels of wheat and corn on site. the multistory part of the facility that you see behind me is the actual location of the flour mill and corn mill processing equipment. that is the exact location where the mill was when my first grandfather purchased it in 1906. when my grandfather originally purchased it, it was a wooden structure. that has all been added since that time. those kinds of facilities were built for the long-term. company ist this founded on, a stable foundation of long-term growth. across the state of oklahoma we have two production facilities.

for the total company we employ about 200 employees. here, it is just over 200. the people you see behind me on this production floor is a product for 25 pound -- 25 pound institutional that go into restaurants and other establishments. that goes throughout the united states. food safety laws are something better creating greater awareness for the public. the food safety programs we have is a company they have been around for 30 years. we work to provide safe products for our customers and we work with big retailers in the industry. we work in cooperation with them on things like clear labeling and things like that for a number of decades. the government has stepped in with a new federally mandated

for its food safety laws. those rules have been adopted by food companies like ours for many decades already. >> it's a great sense of pride for us that our name is shipped all around the country. i they interact in the town grew up in, people share that sense of pride in the products we ship. it has been a real partnership. there have been times we needed support from the city when it comes to moving the utility line or closing the road to a level -- the road to do more expansion. we have always had such great cooperation from the city government down to all of the services they provide. >> cities tour staff recently traveled to shawnee, oklahoma to learn about its rich history.
