s "booktv."o >> this year, c-span is touring cities across the country exploring american history. next, a look at our recent visit to norman, oklahoma. you are watching american history tv all weekend every weekend on c-span3. >> this house was named after ore and harry lindsay. man inre was a wealthy the senses, his occupations as capitalist. he had a lot of money, the majority of which came from real estate investments and things like that. he was the one who designed this house. this house is a queen and victorian-style home. typical features include a big

front porch and back porch, that , and nice facade little details around the house. with the. moore moved lindsay family to norman in 1895, so a few years after the land rush, which was basically a race to claim your own little plot of land. day of the8 89, the land run, there were people living in this area. the population went from zero to give the 200 to 500 overnight. it took some time to actually set up city laws, city government, so officially the city was incorporated in 1891. the city's namesake, abner an earlye was just lansurveyor. the story goes that his team was .alled norman's camp

they carved it into a tree in an area called bishops creek, and that's how this area became known as norman. and known was located as old silk stocking row, a reference to the early wealthy residents of this neighborhood, meaning they can afford to wear silk stockings. this area cost $5,000 to build at the time, 1899, and your average norman home cost about $400 to $500, so this was a big showplace for the community. this articles in the early newspaper where people were so happy that there was this beautiful home in their community. people would take their sunday walks by this house to see mrs. .indsay's rose garden

this was a big showplace even though it is maybe not as big or grand as some of the maybe east coast homes at the time. for this area and for this time period, this was a big deal. this was a beautiful home. this was a space where you wanted to have your best furniture on display. you've got some dark wood furniture, some handsewn pieces. this is a space where you wanted to impress your guests. mr. moore and mrs. lindsay were pretty involved in the community through city council, school board, churches, so this was a space where they could have those conversations with other leaders in the community. this house has seen a lot of history happen through norman. norman has had a navy base. there was the great depression, the growth of the university. this house has been here through all of it, and we hope that it
