>> our c-span cities tour is taken american this taking american history tv on the road -- is taking american history tv on the road. there is a real sense of history in this town for lots of people who have been here a wild because we have been here a long time. >> in winston-salem, we took a tour of the city with retired radio personality jr snyder. >> thank you for agreeing to show us around winston-salem. where are we heading first? >> the art district. we turn right here. winston has an interesting history of being a factory town and this group of people right through here, without any assistance started being an artist colony so all these places - and lots of restaurants

down here, people wanting to have a place to display what they did, this was trade street, and evolving from tobacco factories through here during the time of the furniture march. reporter: winston-salem, and winston specifically, and there is a lot of farmland around here. a number of tobacco factories, and lots of people before r.j. reynolds came here, and chewing tobacco before they started cutting cigarettes. and reynolds came here, that was part of it. and from there, he could see the potential for that. >> r.j. reynolds tobacco company

at night, lots of people live downtown in winston-salem. there a lot of businesses, lots of reasons to be down here all the time. >> why did it turn around? what was the catalyst for that? >> catalyst was let's do something with them rather than turn them down. it had a great deal to do with the growth of this. >> is this old winston? the city is a hyphenated city. tell me about the relationship between winston-salem. >> it started as salem. they came here from pennsylvania in the 1750s and found a community here, salem, old salem, as a church controlled town. in the 1840s they decided to make this a separate county that controls the town, court brings pretty rowdy people. they sold

at prime price the land to the north of them and this became winston. in 1913 they merged. winston was much bigger, more successful than the salem. >> should we see old salem? >> let's see old salem. >> we are heading back in time, we didn't just turn up the street, where are we now? >> completely reconstructed town of old salem. these are original buildings from the original plan. >> there are several moravian populations here. >> this yellow house was the first town hall the people in salem had. downstairs is the jail and upstairs the mayor's office until 1912 when they built another one. a place where

women sowed uniforms during the civil war. this is the original bakery where they continued to cooks and things like they did. we are going to go in. >> we are back in the car and it smells amazing. >> a very traditional dish that is made right here in old salem. >> we are going to try it. >> too read we are not on smellohvision. in several places, the best place is right here at the bakery. this is one of them must stops. coffee pot is an interesting story, that was originally the symbol for mickey's tin shop. people put out that you could get a coffee pot there. it got banged up a couple times. they moved it down to hear. the

moravian sunrise service, soldiers hiding, none of it is true, it has been the symbol of hospitality. >> we have a belly full of treats. where should we go? >> we will see how rich people used to live. >> what part of town is that? >> the rinaldo area. it started out as a dirt road. when r.j. reynolds's wife decided not to live there, she was the driving force. catherine built this estate. the initial estate was over 1000 acres. this is part of the rinaldo estate. this road was dirt originally. of americana museum art.

gett's not the populace you that not the opulence -- >> not the opulence you get from the vanderbilts. >> especially for the time. >> it operates as a museum. how did that happen? >> and through several hands and they wanted to do with the art collection and eventually decided the museum would be the best they did do it. through the woods, that land was given by reynolds for the school to move from wake forest, north carolina. >> we have been all around winston-salem and we are going into wake forest university. if there is something you would like people to know about your town, what would that be? >> it is not that expensive, when your four hours from the beach, you come here and vacation somewhere else and the best.
