workshop. welcome to the theater here at the school of communication. this important event is cosponsored by the au school communication and investigative reporting workshop in black alumni alliance. the nonprofit organization celebrating its first decade with investigative reporting projects and news stories published with at least 28 media partners, especially the pbs program frontline, washington post and wm you. the mission of the black alumni alliance is create a lifelong community among 6600 au alumni that identify with black and african communities through increased opportunities for meaningful engagement for a goal of greater awareness,

pride, participation, volunteer involvement and american university. a number of alliance here including gordon andrew making brief remarks, closing out our program a bit later. it's our distinct honor and pleasure and privilege to welcome courageous intonation of journalist jerry mitchell to our campus tonight, special thanks to sherry williams who were interview him on the stage after his presentation of 20 minutes. jerry mitchell has investigated some of the most heinous of rights crimes in u.s. history. he was an investigative reporter at the newspaper for 30 years, his stories have help put for ku klux klan's been and a suspected serial killer behind bars. his stories have also exposed injustices and corruption prompting investigations, forms of state agencies and the firing of boards and officials.

they help lead to the release of two people from mississippi's death row. a winner of a $500,000 macarthur genius grant and more than 30 other national awards including being named a pulitzer prize finalist, he's finishing his memoir about his pursuit of civil rights cold cases. his book is entitled race against time for simon & schuster. is cofounder and director of the mississippi center for investigative reporting. >> sherry williams is assistant professor at the american university school of communication. dr. williams has a masters degree and phd from the syracuse university newhouse school of public communications and a degree in english with a concentration in journalism from jackson state university and mississippi. interestingly, she also worked for a few years at the clarion ledger news paper in jackson

mississippi. as a professor and media professor her work focuses on marginalized groups, women of color and how they're portrayed in the media. she is now leading us that he that explores how black millennial's are affected by seeing images of fatal police brutality against black people in social media. without further ado, jerry mitchell will now talk and show some photos about his remarkable civil-rights reporting these past three decades, after that dr. sherry williams will ask him about his important courageous reporting and then we will open it up for sessions from the audience. >> so, you're on. thanks. , it's great to be with you all. i have a short time so we will talk about a couple cases i've worked on you may have heard about these cases in the news and one of them you may have heard about and when you may not have heard about. it involves medgar evers. medgar evers was actually he fought in world war ii, he fought in normandy, fighting nazis there from mississippi to fight racism.
