moved to toledo in the 1800s, brought by gas but also by sand. edward drummond woody brought his new england gas company to toledo and opened a plant on ash street, north toledo. a fortune 500 company invented fiberglass. was big inndustry toledo. as the economy changed, as things evolved, we started building other things too. ago, 100 years ago, and automobile started coming to market. they started doing that. the company was the largest employer in toledo for a couple of years. thedoans created and built

world's first atv. when the federal government was looking for a vehicle that general eisenhower felt he needed to traverse the rocky inds to berlin, the company north toledo won that contract and created something known as the g. -- jeep. that was the first off-road vehicle ever. it is important and it is still the primary employer. we have diversified into health care and other fields that are more white-collar. frankly, i think we should market ourselves as the water bill. toledo and other cities are sitting on 20% of the freshwater on planet earth.

20% of all of the freshwater on planet earth is located in our backyard, in the great lakes. i believe if this region can hang on and look for creative ways to reinvent itself, by the end of the century, when water is a desperately sought scarce, not only in this country but across the globe, it will not be a bad thing to be sitting on top of 20% of the earth's freshwater capacity. we could see a real growth that could turn the tables and tilt the scales in our direction. our cities tour staff traveled to toledo, ohio to learn about its history. to watch more, visit c-span.org/cities tour. you are watching american history tv. all weekend, every weekend,
