war really goes back to 1787 and the northwest ordinance that established the area that eventually became five states. they established the border that started at the bottom of lake michigan and ran east to lake erie. the toledo strip is formed by two different surveys and that difference is a wedge shaped strip that was five miles wide at the indiana border and eight miles wide as it reached lake erie. it is a pie shaped wedge that became the toledo strip that ohio and michigan started to wrangle over. really the whole point that ohio and michigan were focused on was what was back then referred to as the port of miami, being the

indian term for the river. it is really that connection at the river basin in lake erie, and everybody knew that would become an important port. so both michigan and ohio wanted to be a part of that. on top of that, you have the. erie canal opening in 1825, people flooding down lake erie.york into both michigan and ohio wanted that area a fur trapper familiar with the area came down to the area. a fur trapper familiar with the area came down to the legislature and reminded them if they drew that line as described in the ordinance they were going to lose the toledo area we knew today. they made an adjustment and moved the line northward as they reached lake erie.

and that went into the 1803 astehood application approved by congress. there was a committee that said we should look at that. by the 1830's michigan territory is getting read to apply for their statehood. they want to settle for this. eriee same time the miami canal would be a huge economic development project for that time. it was starting to come to fruition and people wanted to make sure that was inside their state territory. this all lead up to april of 1835 and the battle of phillips corner. that's when the michigan militia came down and confronted the surveyors who were trying to confront the ohio line. they arrested nine of the survey crew. things in washington start to bubble up because we are saying we have to get involved here. this could turn into a civil war.

it is the last thing we need. we just need to get the whole thing settled. so they started mediating trying to figure out a solution, but neither party was willing to agree to. but by late 1835 jackson brings in several of his smarter and , i guess, more political consultants and they work out a plan in particular with lucas from ohio and approach michigan and say, look, here is what we are going to do. we have to figure out the best way for everyone to get along and the best solution is to keep the state lines the way they are now and give michigan the upper peninsula. to most people in michigan that looks like a real downer in terms of a solution worked out for them because of , but in the end, it worked out for them because of the copper and iron ore deposits. it is just beautiful territory

and a still highly regarded tourism area today. i like to say all this happened over what i consider to be, at that time it was their version of aol. everybody thought it was the next thing, then the railroads came in the canals were quickly regulated to smaller stuff in the railroads took over the country. it is similar what to what happened with aol and the internet. we were all scrambling because the next thing was going to be aol, then the browser. in the internet blew up. to youople don't listen have mail anymore. michiganer 1830 six, accepts the program put forth to accept the border with ohio. there was a second convention where they accepted that. the earliest convention in september, they voted it down. they still didn't think it was fair they were going to get the

up and ohio was going to get toledo. then things started to shift because they were in financial straits and realize the federal government was going to get ready to release some money, but only to the states and not territories. by december they have a second convention referred to as the frostbitten convention, and they accepted the proposal, and michigan became a state and toledo became part of ohio. the whole toledo war probably still has an effect on how toledo looks at itself today. we sit right on the border. a lot of people like to say that toledo is not part of the three c's in ohio, you have cleveland, columbus and cincinnati. and then toledo set sapir in northwest ohio on the michigan border and a lot of folks used to refer this as a mini detroit. so we see ourselves somewhat a, a part of that michigan culture, then we are sitting inside ohio.
