practice of folklife in the state. in thinking about how we choose stories for the west virginia folklife program, there is so much to document, so many people to talk to. sometimes when i hear about a singer in her 90's, that will be a priority. someone who is old and has a lot of stories to tell, that will push something to the top of the list. also stories that complicate the narrative of west virginia, either internally or outside. and stories that show real community cohesion. i have done a lot of work in the swiss community. i worked for over a year documenting their foodways tradition in the swiss version of mardi gras with paper push a

african-american, italian, swiss, it runs the gamut. i think some of the narrative of this place is being homogenous -- of this place being homogenously white, we have internalized. when we lose -- when we use the term appalachian, we have to think about what that may be a codeword for and how we could shifted so it is an inclusive term that includes everyone who lives here and is engaged in the place. goal is not necessarily the world outside but for the communities themselves. i really want the community to say you got this right. not necessarily this romantic perception of the place, but that you got it right in all its complexity.
