tv Impeachment Inquiry Hearing Reaction CSPAN November 19, 2019 8:42pm-9:03pm EST
8:42 pm
the house intelligence committee impeachment inquiry will hear from a total of nine witnesses, four of them testifying today over the course of some ten hours. jennifer williams, and advisor to vice president mike pence, alexander vindman, a ukraine expert, and this afternoon they heard from former ambassador kurt volker, and tim morrison, former national security council adviser on europe and russia. here on c, span we would like to hear from you, your thoughts on what you heard, in today's testimony. here's how to join the conversation. the lines are, for democrats,
8:43 pm
200 to 748 8920. republicans, 200 to 748 and we will hear from the house intelligence committee. let's go force to ray, who's calling us on the republican line in wisconsin. good evening. >> hello, thank you for taking my call. >> as i'm watching, i have a few comments. again, the witnesses all testified that they witnessed no bribery, extortion, quid pro quo, all of that. another thing that i have noticed, a lot of time the colors, and i'll challenge the democratic scholars that follow, they all say that the president attacks witnesses, attacks. as
8:44 pm
if they took a billy club and hit them in the knees, there's no attacks. i've heard the same people say that the president attacks people, but they call on a criminal, and say he doesn't care about the people, he hates other countries, he's a failure, effort all these things. i've wrote them down as i heard them, so democratic collars, when you talk about the president attacking people, don't endure call with an attack. you look kind of goofy. >> let's hear from our democrats. we'll go to eaton in charleston, south carolina. >> hello, hi, yes, i'll respond very quickly about the attacks from the president, a typical american saying that they're fine with the president is doing is wrong. when you use
8:45 pm
your power to make a comment on the top aide and president pence is office, that instigate mass is sending death threats to this person. they are not committing this kind of offensive, that is, incumbent on the president not to do. what i want to say about eric swalwell today, he brought up the turkish president, erdogan, and the corruption there. i think that is a great point. we really want to see what the transcript of their phone call was, the day before troops were pulled out of syria that allowed the turks to go and attack the kurds. >> jennifer williams testified, an aid to vice president mike pence and an expert on russia. she testified earlier this morning, we will show it all to you. let's go to carmen and oklahoma city on the other's
8:46 pm
line. >> hello, you're on the air. make sure you meet your television, and go ahead with your comments, carmen. >> my comments on the last two days, and i've watched it faithfully. i don't doubt for about an hour, but it is just a typical. i have watched how the democrats have treated president trump from day one, and they have never let up. they've never let up on trying to destroy someone that the american people voted for. not all americans, but we all are americans, but it seems like whenever i listen to the democrats, the only americans are democrats. that's wrong. what they are doing with president trump -- if people would remember that they are setting a precedent, and if
8:47 pm
they will do this to the president, little people think that this government can do to them, and will do to them when they get their way? >> carmine, what do you think will come of all of this? what do you think the house will do? >> i believe that the democratic house would destroy the united states as it is. they would destroy it, because they care more about their politics then they do about the country. and like i said, they divide the country. president trump, in my opinion it's trying to unite us but we have people that will choose race, sexual orientation -- anything that they can attack him with, whether he's guilty of it or not, because it's like a mantra! no matter what he does that is right, you accused him that is what he's doing wrong. whatever
8:48 pm
the democrats are doing, they accused republicans of doing. i'm not a democrat, and i'm not a republican, but i do understand, when i listen to someone talk, that i will at least get the benefit of the doubt, and the democrats are getting them nothing. >> i appreciate your opinion, let's go to our republican line, and hang from jacob. >> i just want to bring it back to something that happened on friday, when a new york representative was set down by adam schiff, whenever he was constantly saying the gentlewoman will yield. i think it's something to look at, that he will not let republicans -- and i know it wasn't structure that she was able to speak, but he constantly sensors republican from asking questions. he won't release the name of the whistleblower, and we saw that today. i think he
8:49 pm
needs to really set an order for it to be completely honest with the american people, if he wants it to be that way. >> we're showing you some video from the corridors, just next door to where we are across the street from the u.s. capital, as you can see, continuing to take your calls, your comments on today's testimony. the first of three days that the house intelligence committee will hear from witnesses. let's go to dan, whose and watertown, new york. democrats now. >> thanks for taking my call. i appreciate listen to the comments, but it amazes me, and i followed this quite closely, the name-calling and the insults and the belittling and trying to degrade the witnesses, is almost beyond imagination and defies gravity itself. it's like the gop, and republicans, they refused to accept any truth, or any valid testimony
8:50 pm
based upon the facts. these people that are testifying are reputable people. it seems to me the people that support trump, and god bless you for supporting him, you can support what you want, but in their minds, he cannot do anything wrong, even counting the mounting evidence that we hear and the testimony, and everything that he has done and set since he has been in office. i mean, it's just amazing. they tried to blame the democrats for what's happening to the country, they need to look in the mirror at the same time as they say those things like that. >> do you think there's any disconnect between the way the president sometimes talks about the witnesses for, instance, miss ivanovich last week, the former ambassador to ukraine, and help some of the republican witnesses treat their witnesses?
8:51 pm
>> there's a link. that's it mr. trump's strategy. i'll give you credit for being skillful on selling a line, or influencing people with soundbites. you know, the witch hunt, the hoax, the phony bologna, the democrats are tied to the media or whatever, it carries a lot of weight with his base. i understand that. but the fact of the matter is is that it's factually false. >> let's go to vanessa, who is calling from new york on the independent line. vanessa, good morning. >> hi, how are you. >> i'm fine, thank you. >> i just wanted to say, looking at all the information that has come out, as objectively as possible, and it has been confirmed by all the witnesses that has been an appropriate pattern of behavior. unfortunately, rather than asking about, that they
8:52 pm
are interested in promoting conspiracy theories, that are for the benefit of russia, and that makes me concerned that this is way bigger than even the whistleblower, and i think that people are not looking at the situation at hand. we have career officials that are ringing the alarm bell about risks in our national security., at the intelligence committee warning us about election interference. we have the president and members of congress that are promoting russian intelligence propaganda over american intelligence. this is a national security problem, and there is no interest and maintaining it. >> all right, vanessa, i appreciate your call. your comments on facebook as well. facebook .com slash c-span.
8:53 pm
this one is from galen: >> katrina posted: >> we will continue with your calls, your comments. >> let's hear from the republican line. >> my name is stanley, i live in britain florida, and i can't understand the democrats anymore. president donald trump has done a good job. i'm a representative for the romanian people of the united states,
8:54 pm
and donald trump has helped many of my people, and i think donald trump is doing a great job, and i don't understand why everybody is saying he's doing a bad job, because i think he's doing a very good job, and i think the democrats ought to get up and realize that if they impeach donald trump, who's going to take over? who's going to take over as president? what would you do, go on the streets and walk around with signs, please help me? that's all i have to say. i think he's doing a great job, of that my opinion. >> okay, here's chris, who is in dallas, on our democrat line. >> hello? >> a, chris, if you haven't done so already, meet your television set, and go ahead with your comments. >> i'm calling out of dallas, and i've been watching the debates about donald trump. i just can't believe how republicans can sit there,
8:55 pm
knowing all the testimony that has been given out that is proving that he's unfit to be president of the united states of america. everything he, comes on tv and lies, lies, lies, and how can republicans sit there and event somebody like that? whether you're a democrat or anybody, if you really believe in god and, people say they do, and trust and believe in god, and you know right from wrong, how can anybody in their right mind go with wrong? >> let's go to south carolina, on the independent line. >> how do you do? >> hey there, go ahead! >> it's disappointing that the house in particular and the congress in general has been so divisive over the last three years. the testimony today
8:56 pm
sounded in large part like opinion and speculation over the meaning of the events without any real sound legal issue with the president. the disappointment is that so much time it's being spent on this issue, and no time being spent on things like usmca and military issues, and so on. i think that the ambassador was very clear in his efforts to try and help mr. trump understand the situation with
8:57 pm
mr. zelensky. i think the outcome was favorable. apparently, that is not satisfactory to mr. schiff. it is unfortunately that this division has gone on in our country. it would be nice to get back to the business of taking care of issues in the united states and stop this ongoing issue. >> these open hearings began last week, there will be three of them this week, two so far, the two today, one continuous hearing set for tomorrow as well, we will tell you about that in a bit, and also wrapping up on thursday with a hearing. all of it will be live, all of it on the c-span television networks. we continue to get your calls and comments at 202-748-8920 four
8:58 pm
democrats, republicans on 202-748-8921, and for all others 202-748-8922. if you don't get and, will start on the washington journal. let's hear from jim, a republican from tucson, arizona. >> jim, are you there? make sure you knew your television and go ahead with your comments. >> i'm a cpa in tucson i'm 74 or five, by trying to think about it too much. i'm in good health and good mental health, and i have never seen a president, a person that is so poorly educated to be a president, i mean, you don't even have to be educated you, just have to be a little bit smart. he just doesn't strike
8:59 pm
me as being somebody that has the capacity to do the presidency, and so far in my opinion, he has not shown that he does have the capacity. >> all right, democrat line next. let's go to pittsburgh with denise. go ahead. >> this is denise from pittsburgh. i just want to make a full bullet point of everything i've been listening to. first of all, the democrats, and i support my president regardless if that president is republican or democratic. with everything that's been going on, it seems that the republicans have been redirecting most of everything towards blaming a waste of time for all of these hearings, but if a president of the united states is doing anything wrong, then they should be investigated. so that's number one. that takes precedence over everything, or this country is going to fall, if you are somebody that is
9:00 pm
corrupt leading the country. the second thing is, they talk about that the aid was withheld sometime in august and then let go. why was the eighth withheld to begin with? they're not even mentioning what that part of it is. the other thing is deflecting everything about hunter biden. where is all of the information about trump? none of this came up until recently, so that's all i have to say. >> denise, i appreciate that. kevin is next in salt lake city, will go to the independent line. kevin? you're on the air, go ahead! >> i would just calling about a thing i noticed. when it started out with russia, it was his whole witch hunt and was kind of funny, whether or not it was true or not, we never really figured out whether or not it was true, but when he
9:01 pm
decided to tell ukraine to investigate the bidens, it was kind of like he sent the witch hunt in place. i just thought it was comical. i've been following it too close, but that's what i noticed. if he's sent a witch hunt and place, and backfired on him. we'll find out what happens in the future. >> okay, kevin i, appreciate your comments, the white house has been watching. stephanie grisham, the press secretary at the white house sending out a statement earlier in the hearing that says: >> i appreciate all the calls. as we mentioned, he will have another chance tomorrow morning at 7 am eastern, washington journal, and then we begin day two of this week's coverage of
9:02 pm
the impeachment proceedings, at 9 am eastern. they will hear from gordon sondland, the u.s. ambassador to you european union, also from laura cooper, a deputy assistant secretary of defense for ukraine, and the under secretary of state for political affairs, david hail. that hearing getting underway on c span 9 am eastern, also on the c-span radio app and our coverage is always available at c-span .org.
