attendance as we are finishing up. hang out. don't go anywhere. you can begin to pack up your things. i just want to make sure i got everyone as you were coming in. thanks so much. i guess we are going to finish early. you can watch lectures in history every weekend on american history tv. we take you inside college classrooms to learn about topics ranging from the american revolution to 9/11. that is saturday at 8:00 p.m. and midnight eastern on c-span3. cities tourn's takes american history tv on the road to feature the history of cities across america. here is a recent program. rep. price: my district is in the triangle area of north carolina in three counties. the county where i live is

orange county, which is chapel hill. there is an airstrip of durham county connecting to 80% of the people in the district. a district is best known as diverse and growing district economically, demographically. we like to say the new south. referred toot only shedding some of the negative aspects of our history, but really charting a new course. the research triangle story is pretty familiar and pretty well internalized around here. a group ofears ago leaders in business and education and government had this vision that these worn-out fields in the area between arham and raleigh might be new source for industry, especially for high-tech

enterprise or research related enterprise. so the research triangle was born. it was not an immediate success. ibm became the anchor and pretty soon it blossomed. region and thriving i'd say that's what we are best for. wehink the biggest challenge face here in this district is the challenge of managing growth and achieving fairness, equity, justice in our community. that sounds pretty lofty, but it takes various specific forms, especially in the housing area. this one always pursued a transportation of housing, which is my main legislative interest. i happen to be chairman of the appropriations commission on transportation and housing. those are important national issues, but they are extremely important in this district. transportation we have the challenge of having accessible

and affordable transportation. our region is strangely configured. it is a triangle region, not just a central city. it is difficult to configure a transit system. it.re working on we have a wonderful airport that we have to keep moving. transportation, but housing really is at the heart of that use of equity and a sense of inclusion in the community. it is wonderful to be a place where people want to live and weather is growth and economic opportunity. but you cannot just leave your housing scene to the marketplace. if you do, you will surely gentrified in the central cities like durham. people who serve the community

will no longer be able to serve living in the community. there has to be a concerted effort with all levels of with healthy nonprofits. people who want to do something about making sure the community is inclusive. and i do think that starts with housing. my job in washington is not just to make sure there is federal housing,ce affordable daschle for more housing, but also work locally to make sure we are pursuing those opportunities. this and otherh programs on the history of communities across the country at c-span.org cities tour. this is american history tv only on c-span3. at u.s. andook japanese perspectives on world war ii. white, wasclude pia father was a japanese ambassador
