the writing heavyweight champion six foot seven in test willard defending his crown against the underdog contender. jack dempsey, it was a hot independence day at the toledo arena and toledo ohio a hundred and ten degree. we're standing across from bayview park here in toledo and bayview's famous for hosting the july 4th. 1919 world championship heavyweight bite between jack dempsey and jess willard. it was difficult to find a place to hold this fight fight in 1919 boxing had a an awkward reputation for a death in the ring recently also gambling and organized crime that was involved in it and but toledo made an offer and it was decided to host the fight here, july 4th, 1919. both fighters came to town a couple months before and worked out and trained and they built

an 80,000 seat wouldn't stadium made of michigan pine and right next to us here is a replica of a stadium same design that was built for the july 4th 2019 centennial celebration of the fight the day of the fight was extremely hot and the pine began to kind of leach and so the newspaper boys were all making a fortune selling newspapers for people to sit on if you look at the photographs a lot of straw hats you see people towels over the back of their necks really really warm dempsey who was by far the dog just basically plummets willard and probably one of the most violent. three rounds of boxing you'll ever see willard didn't answer the bell for the fourth round. he went down multiple times in the first round. there was a lot of money gambled for that fight. some of which was was bet on a first-round knockout and so

dempsey was doing his best. there's a questionable bell at the end of the first round that nobody heard and so willard was able to make it to the second round and continue getting a beating one of the most interesting things about the fight is jimmy breslin once wrote that the roaring twenties were born in toledo, ohio on july 4th 19 at this fight. the people that came to this fight the list is incredible to who's who of the roaring twenties toledo at that time was really centrally located with within all the railroad systems. so it was very easy for people to get here and plenty of hotels you have an 80,000 seed arena. it was the perfect venue for biggest fight of the century. first thing to notice here is miller is just barely up. you can watch this and other programs on the history of communities across the country at c-span.org cities tour. this is american history tv only on c-span 3.
