communities across the nation like many americans our staff is staying close to home due to the coronavirus. next a look at one of our city's tour visits. so the battle of fallen timbers actually takes place on august 20th 1794 and it's a convergence of anthony wayne's legion of the united states of america in the western confederacy of native americans who are here protecting their tribal homelands. so the battle of fallen timbers was the last battle in president, washington's indian war. so this effectively stopped the native american and the american settlers confrontations in the northwest territory opening the area up for settlement. so after the american revolution and the signing of the treaty of paris in 1783, the united states had gained its sovereignty in lands from great britain what we're standing in now was the

northwest territory or the mommy river valley and this is what the americans actually gained from the treaty of paris. unfortunately, however, the native americans who had been living in this land we're not the negotiations and they'd been here farming hunting fishing for hundreds of years. when you have people who are moving into what you believe is your land, you're bound to have problems with what you see as invaders into your homeland now during this point in time. we do have treaties that are taking place through the ohio river and up coming towards where we're standing right now, but these treaties were never properly enforced nor were they really ever properly negotiated? and so you are going to start to also have native americans who are not viewing the americans as just or really bargaining appropriately major general anthony wayne was a revolutionary war hero after some debate anthony wayne is chosen to lead what we call the legion of the united states of

america. we have trade routes established if you follow the ohio river and then come up to get to the mommy river to get to this land that really is a very suit homeland for folks to start moving into so it's very important for anthony wayne to be able to come up and provide the safety of the settlers who are living around these newly established forts as he pushes further into the northwest territory or the mommy river valley, which is really the goal. so anthony wayne begins his travels about 18 months after he was commissioned as the new major general of the united states legion as he marches up it takes him a year basically from 1793 to 1794 to travel the length. he actually makes it to about fort recovery and little turtle again is watching and as he does so they do attack anthony wayne's legion as this unfolds. he realizes that this army is
7:54 pm
different than the other two armies that he had previously faced. so he goes back to the grand council and he says this army is different. he says, i'm not sure the british are actually going to involve themselves in our fight. we really may need to consider negotiations at this point in time the council votes and they decide that they do want to continue with military action when they do decide that little turtle actually hands over. here the rains to blue jacket blue jacket is of the shawnee and he's warrior-minded and he's really ready to take this fight to the united states legion the native americans have actually built their village right behind fort miamis, which is a fully constructed fort garrisoned with the british at this point in time under general campbell anthony wayne on august 17th has made it to roast a book. so as he comes to roosevelt,
7:55 pm
which is just a little bit outside of our battlefield. he's actually going to stage there and he's going to build camp deposit as he does that he sends some volunteers out and these volunteers come to about this area where we're at right now our fallen timbers battlefield as they do that. they're actually captured they bring them back to their village and they find out what anthony wayne's battle plans are so is anthony wayne marches? he's marching with a line. that's about two to four miles long. as he marches from roosevelt, he's actually going to come to this area of the fallen timbers as he does that he's going to start to meet native american resistance. so he's going to send out an advanced guard they're going to start to engage in the firefight that will eventually lead to the larger battle. so as it starts to take place the native americans are actually engaging in advanced scout group giving enough time to the main body of the legion of the united states to deploy which allows them to set up
7:56 pm
sustained firepower, which will eventually out match the native americans, which will then force them to retreat although we can't be sure about two years before the battle of fallen timbers there were records written by sudlers who talked about great swirling winds coming through this town uprooting trees and felling timbers. so when anthony wayne writes home to secretary of war henry knox, he says we have fought the native americans at the location of the fallen timbers as anthony wayne is marching to fort miami. the native americans have reached it first now they expect to be able to go either into the fort or to have reinforcement sent out from the fort. well campbell has been given specific instructions that he is not to intervene militarily. basically what that would be doing is declaring war on the united states of america and at
7:57 pm
this point, i'm great britain had no intention of declaring war unless they could win and really win big and they weren't going to make the decision at fort myers to do that. so what ends up happening then is the native americans now see that the british were not going to fight with them and they leave very disheartened and very betrayed. so this battle has then forced the native americans to reevaluate their alliances with the british and how they're going to withstand the onslaught of the settlers who are going to continue to push into their lands the battle of fallen. has lasted approximately two hours with the heaviest losses taking place in about 45 minutes from what we can glean. we're seeing that between 30 and 50 were lost on each side. although the losses were a little bit lower than we would expect to see when we say that the americans definitively won the battle of fallen timbers what we're seeing happen.
7:58 pm
is that disillusionment taking place with the native americans with the british and so they're starting to see that the british aren't really going to step in and help them keep their homelands and so as they've now seen the united states can fight and so the army is different. it's run by a different general there's different people fighting and it's starting to look like to the native americans that they only have one option left and that option is to actually be able to negotiate as their own tribes with the united states government 1795 the united states of america sends its delicates to me with representatives of every tribe who held lands in the maumee river valley they come together in greenville, and they signed the first treaty in american history that accurately deals with the native americans who actually owned and lived on this land every tribe does have a representative and the
7:59 pm
appropriate representative to sign and what this does end up doing though because they seeded their land is it does open up for those indian removal acts which you'll see really removes the native americans all the way out west which again opens up the united states for manifest destiny and the push even further west than what the original treaty line was. you can watch this and other programs on the history of communities across the country at c-span.org cities tour. this is american history tv only on c-span 3. american history tv on c-span 3 every weekend documenting america's story funding comes from these television companies and more including comcast. are you think this is just a community center? no, it's way more than that comcast is partnering with a thousand community centers to create wi-fi enabled lift zones. so students from low-income families can get the tools.
