fine. >> between you and i, captain york, a lot of people around you will be very surprised. you know, some of the girls think that it is old fashioned, kind of just gowdy. let me tell you something, girls. anybody who thinks that about captain york is really making one big mistake. you know, she happens to be an absolutely groovy person. >> boy, you really changed your mind about her in a hurry. anyways, glad to see running into captain york did not spoil your evening. >> it did not at all. >> mine was such a mess. >> what went wrong? >> everything that could possibly go wrong. it really ruined my evening, the whole thing started at the restaurant. >> even ordering the food was a big problem.

that is right, sandy, just tell frank. >> i would like the shrimp cocktail, please. roast beef with a baked potato and a tossed salad. >> good evening, sir, madam. care to order now? >> yes. the lady would like the shrimp cocktail, roast beef -- medium rare? medium rare. the baked potato and a tossed salad. >> what sort of dressing would you like on that? >> oh, russian, please. >> okay, russian. >> listen to me, giving you all of the answers, as if i knew all about it. sandy, don't let it fool you, i get into plenty of messes myself. >> you do? >> i sure do. just the other night, i was on my way out with tom. >> oh, excuse me. >> it was only a little thing, but was so confusing. i had to stop and think, you see. i can't remember when i am supposed to open the door and

when i am not. all day long i opened doors, and stand when i talk to the officers i work with. after a while, you get used to that. but i get kind of confused. after 1700 hours, this little pumpkin changes and becomes -- the lady. they stand for me. >> i stand corrected, am! [laughter] >> oh my, how was your day? >> and they opened doors for me. not bad, not bad at all. >> it takes a little thought and remembering once in a while, but it is all worthwhile. >> well i really enjoy just being a girl, it is so great! >> well my dear, glad to see you have all of your problems solved, i wish i could say the same about myself. >> sandy, come on. you are exaggerating.

>> i am not. >> it could not have gone that path. >> oh it did. >> okay, okay. come on tell us all about it. what happened? >> all kinds of things. you know i do not embarrass easily. but man, as soon as we got in that restaurant, i struggled. >> i did not know which one to use, i did not want to look like a fool. >> but that is easy, sandy. you don't have to worry about anything like that. i used to get confused by that, but no. more that you can find out what each silverware is four. if you don't, know you just go from the outside, into the plate. that is right, sandy. that is right, the outside one.

i even had the same trouble with tom. >> what is the big deal? so you need to set up at the reception for the sergeant major, what is so special about that? >> well you might not realize, there's a lot with an affair like this, it just does not happen, you know. >> well i would say the first thing we have to do is to get organized, decide what kind of party we want, where will we get the money, how much money we want to spend, things like that. this is a very important event. i think we should have a sit-down meal. >> no, we had a nice morning coffee, we decide it is not too cute, and no one wants to afford a dinner. >> i think it ought to be a reception buffet. >> no, i think it should be a dinner. >> a coffee. >> no. >> i think it buffet would be better -- >> we finally decided on a

reception buffet. we needed to find out how much the fund could afford to give us, that took some doing. set up a committee to help with food and beverages, but was also a lot of time and work. and one of my jobs was to figure out who to invite and get the invitations out. if you think that is an easy job, you are making another big mistake -- >> i did not say it was easy, susan, i did not say that! >> van, spent all afternoon with the first sergeant helping set up the receiving line. then we had to check to make sure everything was according to regulations. well, i am glad that is all over with, there will still be 1000 things to do at the reception itself. there will be so glad when tomorrow is over. >> it really was wonderful, after all. >> i told you he would have a good time. what is there to do at a reception? >> is that so? let me tell you of all that to happen if all your thinking about is a good time. we could've had a large situation on our hands had not

been handled correctly. there is more to it, tom, than just having a good time. i had to see that it all ran smoothly, betty james passing down the line correctly, and as the line close, the guest of honor did not end up talking to nobody, getting people to mingle who is a very important part of party. then, we purposefully avoided having chairs so people can target mingle, here you girls are, having your own private party going. come on, get with it! girls, would you like to meet the new sergeant major? come, she is over there, okay? >> hey, that does take a lot of doing. i am sorry, sweetie, i did not mean to put you down. >> good appearance, social graces, personal development at this time it up. in career advancement, social acceptance are both a pretty

the role of american maritime insurers in early america. she talks about how they helped the u.s. negotiate foreign loans, and created the first national bank. here is a portion of that program. >> who is in charge? these marine insurance a business under united states law? if so why? if not, why not? it sounds like one of the essay questions that i assigned to my undergrads for the end of this term. again, i think this is a particular puzzle, insurance itself is a form of governance in the age of revolution, insurance is it kind of form of self governance. it's an imperfect one that is threaded through the institutions of the state itself. it is helping to make the state, shaping the terms according to which the state governs a business which it still can't fully govern because insurance is so wealthy and complicated, so international in nature. >> watch the full
