so when the administration's wrong on an issue we'll propose a better way. but we're going to need to stick together and we're going to need some wins next@@@@@@@ @ @ @ @ @r with your help we are going to do this. thank you for coming out tonight, and thank you for all of your support. we appreciate you. [captioning performed by national captioning institute] [captions copyright national cable satellite corp. 2009] >> one of my favorite acts by leader boehner is when he took the stimulus bill and he dropped it on the house floor and said, this is bad policy. [applause]
5:31 am
john boehner was first elected in 1990. taking on the democratic establishment ever since. john was instrumental in drafting the contract with america which was so effective that it helped bring republicans to the majority in 1994. we are going to need to do that in 2010. when i first met john, i think i met him out in california. the first thing that impressed me were those eyes. and then that tan. that skin. i mean, and i'm used to seeing that stuff in california. but there was something riveting about john's appearance, and then i realized actually, that he reminded me of my dad who was a golf professional. and john loves golf as well, and
5:32 am
my dad was that kind of gracious, you know, figure, very, you know, elegant. but down to earth tough, principled. that's who john is. and i'm very honored to introduce him to you tonight. ladies and gentlemen, john boehner. >> thank you, jon for the introduction. i appreciate you all being here tonight. and doing what you do to help promote our party and our values. let me also welcome all my fellow gm shareholders. i want to thank paul ryan, our dinner chairman for helping pull this event together.
5:33 am
and i want to thank him for the pivotal role that he's playing on our house republican team. i also want to thank pete sessions for the outstanding work that he's doing to build a stronger and more aggressive nrcc. you know, raising moin, recruiting great candidates and really going after the vulnerable democrats around the country and let me tell you, they're doing great work. now, i wasn't really going to talk about my senate colleagues because you know, this is a house-senate dinner. they do our thing, we do ours. let me tell you what, i could not have a greater partner in this town than senator mitch mcconnell. you know, there are an awful lot of those senators now who were former house members and friends of ours. let me tell you what, working together on behalf of our party,
5:34 am
i think we're showing the american people the best of the republican party and the best that we can do on their baffle. behalf. i also want to thank newt for being here tonight, as well. newt is a true agent of reform, an ideas guy who knows how to solve problems and who knows how to win a fight and i look forward to what he has to say tonight. listen, everyone in this room tonight is a prime target for president obama and speaker pelosi, and it's not because you're republican. it's because you work hard and you play by the rules. you know, responsible, hard working fames are taking it on the chin under this regime. they're the people who are bailing out the people who lied on their mortgage applications, they're paying higher credit card rates for people who used their cards irresponsibly, they're paying for billions for government takeover of gm, they're paying for the thousands
5:35 am
of wasteful earmarks fund agairport for no one, stimulus checks to dead people. they're also the ones paying for the new national energy tax, the so-called cap in trade bill that's going to raise costs for every working family it that drives to work or dares to switch on a switch in their home. vice president biden says some people are getting scammed by the stimulus. oh, really? i'll tell you who's getting scammed, every hard working taxpayer that's footing the bill for all this nonsense. ladies and gentlemen, this is the most expensive and the most dangerous credit card in the history of the world. it's a congressional voting card. and it's what democrats are using to bury the middle class and our children under a mountain of debt. and we need to take this card away from them.
5:36 am
we need to elect a new republican majority to curb spending and to cut taxes. implement an all of the above energy plan. make high quality health care affordable, portable and simple. end bailouts once and for all. and start forcing the washington to respect the constitution again and over the next 17 months, i'm going to need your help to make nancy, make sure nancy pelosi doesn't spend one more day in the speaker's chair. your presence here tonight is fueling our fight for a new principled republican majority. and i can't thank you enough or tell you how proud i am to be on then journalp@ap@a@
5:37 am
thank you for being here tonight, i hope that you're having a great time. i am excited about our opportunities in 2010. we have a great opportunity to win back republican seats in the house of representatives and the united states senate. and our chances are better because of your strong support. i want to talk about the contributions and the presence of my colleagues, every republican senator who has been reaching out to support us all
5:38 am
across this great land, i would ask them to participate in this cycle. i want to thank the 33 republican senators who are here tonight, and i want to thank sentiment, -- senator mcconnell. he is a great tactician on the floor of the senate, and he has put in the time and energy to make certain that the 2010 efforts are successful. i want to thank you for your great support. i want to talk about john ensign. we are trying to build on what you did in 2008, thank you for

your leadership. and then to pete sessions. some people may wonder why two texans are leading this. you would expect for us to work together very well, and we do. the only exception to this may be the softball game that will occur this thursday, but beyond that, we will be peas in a pod. and i want to say, to orin hatch, he has been a warrior in raising money and if you have been the recipient of one of his phone calls, you know what i am talking about. he is making phone calls every night, to washington, from
5:40 am
wherever he is, to wherever you happen to be. many of you know that i am here because of a phone call. you know you can give more and he will remind you. thank you for being a great vice chairman and serving as our dinnner chairm-- dinner chairman tonight. and i want to thank jon voight for being the mc.it is refreshing --- mc. it is -- emcee. it is refreshing to hear you, a nd we need more people from hollywood speaking this way. and to newt gingrich, we woook
5:41 am
forward to -- we look forward to hearing from you. thank you for your ideas. and to gov. palin and todd, thank you for being here and for your leadership, we appreciate you. we will have a video that shows what is at stake in this election, this will show how determined that the republicans are to bring back conservative leadership this cost almost no money so we can focus the contributions on winning the elections in 2010. thank you for supporting us, i

supporting both the health and -- the house and senate. we have to take them back. we simply have to. we love and appreciate all of you, god bless you and keep telling. -- keep helping. >> please welcome pete sessions. >> thank you very much. and you for hosting us tonight -- and i have the opportunity tonight to see exactly what table that i mat.
5:45 am
218. we cannot wait to get there with you. it will be great. let's go to victory. the job in the house is to retire nancy i want to thank each and every one of you for being here tonight. i want to thank paul ryan, who has a great job as the chairman. thank you very much. as you have seen, we have highlighted the american entrepreneur. i like to recognize jay from
5:46 am
florida. with a backpack and several dollars, he came to this country to look for the american dream. to becoming the founder of a real-estate investment company, he has built his american dream through hard work and innovation, and they believe in the liberty of the free enterprise system. please stand for us. thank you for your example of entrepreneurship and service. i am please to recognize the next governor of virginia, bob mcdonald.
5:47 am
he was the attorney general of virginia, and he is the republican candidate for governor this year. with a record of promoting job creation, strengthening the free enterprise system and building a safer community. this will bring republicans as a victory in virginia that will help us across the country. thank you for being here with us tonight. also want to commend all of my colleagues in the house republican conference. we are showing america that we are a unified party with the best solutions to create jobs and grow the economy. republicans are standing together to fight against the agenda of nancy pelosi and the
5:48 am
puppet democrats. every week i see the house democrats giving her a blank check to do with as she wants to do to the taxpayer, and i believe that the american people are increasingly alarmed, with what they see. the consequences of democrats having unchecked one-party rule, with a trillion dollars spending spree, and more debt than any time in the nation's history, i do not think that this is the change that americans thought that they could believe in. where i come from, people come together in tough times, with a defined set of national goals in the best interest of every
5:49 am
american. we share this unified interest of an powering people as republicans, not the government, not just to create jobs and grow the economy, but to make certain that the best days of america are in the future. this is in contrast to nancy pelosi and the democrats because they believe that the solution to every problem is bigger government and apparently there definition of economic activity is picking the winners and losers in the marketplace at the expense of millions of jobs. the american people know that we cannot tax or borrow or spend or regulate the way back to economic prosperity. and i will say that republicans on working tirelessly for fiscal responsibility to hold the
5:50 am
democrats accountable for their actions. together, we are shutting the light on the backroom deals, we are uncovering the truth behind unproven accusations and we are promoting transparency and oversight on behalf of the american taxpayers. they deserve much better from the government them what we are getting. let's see how energized republican conference is fighting to reclaim the majority in congress. god bless you and god bless america. >> the house has passed a spending package without a single republican vote. >> the vote there was 246-183 without a single republican.
5:51 am
>> this was passed without a single republican vote. >> every single house republican, joined by a dozen democrats, voted against this. >> a boost for republicans. >> she knows this, this is not the bill that will provide stimulus. >> the republican party said this is not what they stand for, and every house republican voted against the agenda. >> when the house stood together, that is where the kurds starts. this has been contagious and this makes us keep working. the american people said that we can stop this. >> we have 1100 pages, not one member of this body has read this.
5:52 am
what happened to the promise that the american people will see what is in here. we do not have time to do this. >> you have to be kidding. >> if there was a massive bill with the devil in the details, it is this. >> a misdirected spending spree. >> the biggest redistribution of wealth is -- in the nation's history. >> democrats think we should borrow more money. >> this is the answer in a democratic congress, we have seen this time and time again. >> by being united, republicans are sending a signal to the united states, that the policies of this congress and this administration are wrong. >> i have not seen a republican
5:53 am
congress as unified, the conference is unified in the opposition of the new government. >> the american people will be able to count on republicans as we face the issues as they relate to health care, spending, energy, all of those issues. we will represent the view of the american people, and we will make sure that we are on their side, always. always. [applause] >> ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the honorable paul ryan. >> good evening again, everybody. you know what? change has come to washington. this is not the kind of change i would argue the american people thought they were going to get. when they went to the polls in november for hope and change, they didn't think we were going
5:54 am
to double and didn't think they were going to have the government-owned car companies, didn't think the government wold was going to take over the healthcare and energy sectors. and i want to thank you all for being here tonight to help us get the change back that we need. and why here tonight is not simply so that republicans beat democrats. that is not what this is about. what we are here tonight is to build and launch an effort to get our country back. [cheerand applause] >> we believe in the american ideal, the ideas that built this country: freedom, liberty, self-determination, free enterprise and entrepreneurship. that's what the american ideal is. you work hard, you play by the rules, you enjoy the fruits of your labor. that's what made this time beautiful, most prosperous nation on the planet, in the history of the planet. and what is the kind of change
5:55 am
the president and his party are bringing us today? they want to replace that notion, that idea of equalizing opportunity for all americans with the european notion of eek liesing the results of -- equalizing the results of people's lives. that is not what america is all about. and for us to get back, for us to reclaim the american ideal, we've got to be the reform party we used to be. we've got to be the party of ideas. and guess what? we got a special treat tonight. because the architect of the last reform movement, the man of ideas, newt gingrich, is our keynote speaker this evening. [cheers and applause] >> he was the architect of the contract with america. newt gingrich was named time magazine man of the year in 1995 because they could not neglect the fact that he led a massive and important transformation of our government at the end of the
5:56 am
20th century. newt is here with his lovely wife carissa this evening. we're about to see a video which we'll show you that this man of ideas is still there. this is not a man with ideas, he is the man of ideas. ladies and gentlemen, newt gingrich. [cheers and applause] >> november 1992, the democrats had just won control of the white house as well as a 82-seat majority in the house. and a near filibuster proof majority in the senate. republicans were in a deep minority. they were looking for answers. they were looking for a leader. in just two years, the democrats had taxed and spent and
5:57 am
threatened to take over healthcare and expand the welfare state. our way of life, our freedoms were in yep are ditch. and so americans began a new revolution. and a congressman from georgia would lead the way. >> this is truly in a way that very few political events ever are a historic event. >> under the leadership of newt gingrich, republicans promised a new contract with america. sweeping reforms on a government that had grown too much. and for the first time in 40 years, republicans won control of the house and the senate. >> we're winning. we're winning. we're winning. >> this was a resounding victory for freedom. the republicans' revolution. >> mr. clerk, the speaker elects newt gingrich, aren't from georgia.
5:58 am
>> newt gingrich pledged with passion to restore america's promise. he was the first republican speaker in 40 years. and everyone could feel the significance of that moment. >> we can find ways to reach out and break through the bureaucracy and to get every american child a better chance. >> and so began the most productive first 100 days of any time in history. we are on schedule. we are getting the job done with enormous help from the american people. >> middle-class tax relief, anticrime legislation, job creation, tort reform, small business incentives, and a balanced budget. but that's not where our story ends. newt gingrich is still one of the most active voices of our conservative movement. >> having the health system become more efficient, taking
5:59 am
the waste out of administrative costs, drill here, drill now, pay less. and i believe we have to elevate fundamental break throughs in learning for all americans. >> armed with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, this former history teacher continues to not only inspire but educate audiences around the country. >> 700 plus e. parties around america today. you want to put lots of money back in this economy? put it back with the american people. that's called being a customer, not being a bureau carat. >> we're going to return america to a past that allows us to pursue happiness ourselves. >> from foreign policy to healthcare, from the environment to free market principles, newt is one of the most respected experts on conservative policy. and he's led many organizations focused on delivering real change. our story, our republican story, is a proud o
