that's going to take people so long to rebuild from. and what's so awful on the financial side is most of the affected people had no flood coverage. they didn't live in a flood plain in most cases, their lender didn't require it. they didn't even think they should buy it. but here's the truth -- if you live in an area that is low-lying, but not in a flood plain, flood insurance is extra, extra, extra cheap to buy. and people should do it. it is a simple thing to buy. you see what happened here. you think -- wow, i'm glad that wasn't me. you prevent the financial harm from happening to you, if floodwaters ever come to visit your house. >> how about renters? >> renters can buy flood insurance so cheap -- listen to this, it starts at only $39 a year! $39 is nothing. >> yeah. if you weren't covered at all, is there any way to get any help? >> you know, that's why the

federal disaster assistance is goings to be so key. because that will make extremely low-interest loans available to people. who are affected, who did not have flood insurance. but the true fact of the matter is, a lot of these people are going to be wiped out. because they will have no protection that will allow them to rebuild if anywhere. and it's such an important lesson for all of us, everywhere. >> how about homeowners association, should they insist on every member buying flood insurance? because if one guy gets wiped out. there goes the value of every unit. >> generally, homeowners associations aren't in a position to do that. but condo associations in many cases do participate in the federal flood insurance program and that does rebuild. i own a condo, where my condo was not under water, but two of the buildings in our complex are. all of us essentially are sharing in the cost of rebuilding those. through our federal flood insurance premium that we pay as part of our condo fee. >> can i ask you real quick --

sky harbor airport in phoenix, and that's a somewhat disabled national guard jet with four people on board, trying to make landing after reporting landing gear problems. the best information we have, is that they have a blown front tire. apparently the pilot noticed that on takeoff and decided to make an emergency landing. they may be doing a pass over the airport. it's not entirely clear. it doesn't look like it's a deployment issue. it looks like the gears are fully extended and deployed. on this plane. which would appear to be a civilian or military version of a civilian 737. that looks like the configuration. it's coming in lower, it may be

1:32 pm
and flights. robert, can you hear me? what do you think of this. it's a picture-perfect landing, right? >> it looks really good. i mean, even a blown tire on an airplane this large is a serious issue. so i'd say they did a heck of a decent job here. >> yeah. what would he have done as a pilot different? >> well, the main thing you would try to do, in fact you saw it when he was touching down, he was trying to hold the nose of the airplane off. so as to let the nose gear touch down as the slowest speed as possible. and that would keep the remaining tire from, from unwinding. i mean because it has two tires on the front, because it needs to, to support the airplane. if you put all that weight too quickly on the one, that's most likely going to blow, too. and that changes the whole situation. that could have certainly turned into a fire.
1:33 pm
>> do you know when you take off, that you've blown a tire? >> caller: sometimes you can tell. i mean you'll hear it when, when you're rolling down the runway. you may hear some sound like a piece of the tire letting go and hitting the bottom of the airplane. but once you're flying, you don't really care about it, you know you're going to have to deal with it on the other end. but my guess is they must have obviously had that same kind of indication. >> would he have lost control if both of them are out? >> caller: on takeoff, if he had blown both nose gear tires on takeoff, that's the steering, that's directional control for the airplane down at you know, say under 100 knots, that would have been a real serious issue. >> good landing, good outcome. robert marks, thank you. clean-up under way across parts of georgia. north of georgia, several major highways around atlanta have been closed. portions of interstate 20, the

we have this story just in to hln. a florida man has now apparently confessed to killing his wife and five children. damas faces six counts of first-degree murders for the deaths of his family. that's after police found his wife and children dead in a townhouse in naples, florida, on saturday. damas is a u.s. citizen. he fled to haiti. he was arrested on monday. he's being extradited to the u.s. he's now in custody at the collier county jail. this is what he told a reporter as he left the lockup. >> mr. damas, anything you want to say? >> yes.
3:01 pm
i want to be buried with all my family. >> did you kill them? >> yes, i did. >> why? >> only god knows. >> you don't know? what happened, mr. damas? mr. damas, do you want to be sentenced to death, or do you want life in prison? >> i want death right away. i think my family probably buried this saturday coming up. i want the jury to give me death so i can bury with them the same time. >> what possessed you to do it? >> my mom pretty much made me do it. >> why? in what way? >> my mom is the devil. >> why in such a brutal way? why your children? what did they do? >> they did nothing. >> then why? why would you kill them? they're innocent? you believe in jesus christ? you believe in jesus? >> do you believe in jesus christ?
3:02 pm
do you believe in the devil? >> i believe in jesus christ. i did it. mi eyes was closed. right now my eyes are open. >> are you going to go to heaven when you die? >> right now, yeah. but i was going to kill myself. i didn't have the courage to do it. if you do yourself, you're not going to heaven. >> when were you going to kill yourself? >> the same time it happened. i didn't have the courage to do it myself. >> damas claims his wife and an even spirit were causing the slayings. he said he had found forgiveness in christ. the big cleanup under way across much of northern georgia. it will take a while a long while, for things to get back to normal. just today a home in georgia destroyed by fire. firefighters, as was often the case during this ordeal, couldn't get to the house because the streets were flooded. they were forced to let this fire burn itself out. several major highways around atlanta have reopened now after being closed because of high waters. here's what it looked like at six flags over georgia.

3:04 pm

devastating in people's lives. you see the loss of life, but also the loss of property that's going to take people so long to rebuild from. what's so awful on the financial side is most of the affected people had no flood coverage. they didn't live in a floodplain. their lender didn't require it. they didn't think they should buy it. here's the truth, if you live in an area that is low lying but not in a floodplain, flood insurance is extra, extra extra cheap to buy. people should do it. it is a simple thing to buy. you see what happened here and think wow, i'm glad that wasn't me. you prevent the financial harm from happening to you if flood waters ever come to visit your house. >> how about renters? >> renters can buy flood insurance so cheap. it started at $39 a year. $39 is nothing. >> yeah. if you weren't covered at all,
3:06 pm
is there any way to get help? >> you know, that's why the federal disaster assistance is going to be so key. that will make low interest loans available to people who were not affected who didn't have flood insurance. the true fact of the matter is at lof of these people are going to be wiped out. because they will have no protection that will allow them to rebuild from anywhere. it's such an important lesson for all of us everywhere. >> how about homeowners associations? should they insist on every member buying flood insurance? if one guy gets wiped out, there goes the value of the whole unit. >> generally homeowners associations aren't in a position to do that. con do associations in many cases do participate in the federal flood insurance program. and that does rebuild. i own a con do where my condo. all of us are essentially

sharing in rebuilding those through the federal flood insurance. how do you avoid getting ripped off, real quickly? >> don't let anybody who comes by your house smiling work for you? you want to ask your insurer for a referral to people, ask your neighbors, dig back to people in the past. don't just hire any old stranger who shows up on your street and says they'll help you now. be patient until you can find a contractor that you have reason to believe is reputable. >> it's great to hear from you. thank you so much. right place, right time, right guy. much more on how you can protect yourself from flooding this weekend. don't miss it this weekend for saturdays and sunday. he'll help you with getting ripped off. the federal reserve is not raising short-term interest rating chlg.
