experimental hiv vaccine prevented people from being infected, people who got the two-part booster and now the placebo were 31% less likely to get hiv. that's according to researchers. the u.s. army helped pay for the study which was done in thailand. a u.n. aids expert explained why even limited prevention is a major breakthrough. the protected efficacy, meaning the strength of the vaccine, is not as high as we would have wanted with a 31% protected but it's the first time we have a trial in humans that is showing the concept of an hiv vaccine can work. >> the study follows more than 16,000 volunteers in thailand over the last three years. researchers caution that different hiv strains exist around the world. so more research is needed to see if the vaccine would work elsewhere and to make one that's more effective. two california runers who disappeared in a remote national

forest monday have been found alive after an incredible search. a chopper found maria so weak she could barely wave yesterday. her brother-in-law was found ours earlier. endurance athletes run for a full day covering as much as 100 miles. the terrain is too rough for search vehicles and dogs can't go that far. her husband thanks the rescuers. >> i'm eternally grateful. i appreciate everything you've done. thank you for finding my wife. she's really, really strong willed. never thought she couldn't do anything just to prove you wrong 100% of the time. >> several endurance runners came out to try to follow the pair in the back country. armenta is seriously hydrated and in serious condition. world leaders walked out on iran's speech last night. mahmoud ahmadinejad spoke to a near empty room. he called for nuclear disarmament but didn't mention

paramedics arrived. one of those paramedics is charged in the alleged blackmail plot. both have pled not guilty. today we are going to learn who will temporarily take over the late edward kennedy's seat. that will be at 11:00 a.m. eastern. a kennedy family associate says several family members want it to be paul kirk. this could give democrats a 60th senate vote for a health care bill. there's a special election for the seat in january. hot santa ana winds are driving a wildfire towards people's homes in southern california. now this is what the fire looked like overnight. about 40 miles north of los angeles here. firefighters are cutting and burning away brush to get it under control. more than 2,000 people were warned to evacuate their homes. right now the fire is only about 40% contained. the head of a mental institution has resigned after a legally insane killer he escapen

a field trip to a county fair. paul was on the run for three days in washington state before he was finally caught. he was institutionalized after confessing to a 1987 murder. the ceo who is stepping down says the hospital followed proper procedures but similar field trips are suspended for now. well, the heavy storms are now long gone and more people in the southeast are going home. a few say they got help from two teenaged heroes and as the floodwaters began rising a couple of 16-year-old best friends in the atlanta area decided to make it their mission to save as many people as possible. >> i've always been the one to go out there and get it done. i can't stand sitting inside watching tv and not be able to do anything. >> it makes me very proud of them because you hear so much about teenagers. they did the right thing. >> well, they're not the only

ones. rescue teams are going door-to-door looking for animals, handing out food to people and whatever else it takes. the biggest worry right now may be disease causing bacteria in the water. and over to meteorologist bob van dillen to see if there's more heavy rain expected in the south and parts of the west. good morning, natasha, and there is, unfortunately. the heavy rain moves back into the georgia/alabama area starting saturday through sunday. the heavy rain will be back. right now a steady stream of rain following a stationary front that goes from texas and back on in to the great lakes, the upper midwest, too. getting some light rain showers out there. this goes around memphis. heavy downpours here but the rain itself is starting around texas and once again that's good news. you need it. you're going to get a couple of showers around san antonio. rain around here not going to be quite as heavy as it was the last couple of days but it's still in the forecast for you. a couple light showers moving in and out. showers up to college station,

the community organizing group a.c.o.r.n. is suing the people who filmed undercover videos at their offices. you may remember seeing them advising two people posing as a pimp and prostitute. they offered tips on cheating the irs and hiding illegal income. >> correspondent richard lui joins us now. a.c.o.r.n. admits the behavior was unacceptable, so why are they suing? well, good morning to you. they say the filmmakers basically set up their employees and claim the tapes violate

wiretapping laws. it is illegal to record a conversation unless everyone involved knows they are on the tape. two baltimore employees fired over those recordings are co-plaintiffs on the lawsuit as well. it also seeks an injunction to stop any further distribution here of these videos. >> so, richard, the lawsuit names the two filmmakers and a columnist who first posted it on line. what about them? >> the conservative activists are basically amateurs. giles says she came up with the idea after jogging past an a.c.o.r.n. office. she got in touch with o'keefe because she heard he did similar projects. in 2007 he'd take called to planned parenthood clinics offering to donate money only if it was used for black women to get abortions. some cases staff members agreed to that. the pair says they made the a.c.o.r.n. tapes here with just

$1,300. >> wow. all right, richard. thank you very much. very interesting details there. well, this next story is going to make you cringe. tv actress mackenzie phillips talks about what was a longtime sexual relationship with her father. that's new for you in about 30 minutes. a government program that could be keeping your mortgage rates low is being extended. jennifer westhoven is here. jen what do we know about this program and do homeowners even know about it? a lot of people don't, natasha. this is one of those it's kind of a behind-the-scenes program not like cash for clunkers where it directly affects you. it indirectly affects you. the government is buying billions of dollars of mortgaged back securities so even though you may not be seeing it you're reaping the benefits if you buy, sell or refinance. that's good news in a bad economy. now what the government is doing by guaranteeing all these mortgages it means the lenders feel secure enough that they can go out and make new loans and we

know they haven't been making very many but the ones they're making are partially, some would argue, because of the government program. experts credited with keeping rates at some of their lowest levels in decades in a generation. rates are about 5.25% right now and basically the fed, we have thought this program was going to expire right away or they would cut it off early but they're going to extend it possibly into early next year. there's going to be fewer elfs this season helping you with your holiday shopping. most retailers say they're going to have less staff for this year's holiday season. this was a survey of some of the nation's biggest retailers. they were talking to best buy, target and saks and signaling americans are going to be real cautious with the budgets this year. of course that's good for you and your family. the flip side is a lot of americans really count on those holiday jobs for a little extra money so those are going to be tight. hard jobs to get this year. maybe for the holiday your kids

moammar gadhafi's rant at the u.n. and now a new york suburb has evicted the libyan leader from their neighborhood. late yesterday the town of bedford took down a large tent that was on property owned by donald trump. many people in the area are angry with gadhafi for his role in the 1988 pan am bombing over scotland. we need to warn you this next video may be disturbing to watch. deputies outside chicago raided a dogfighting operation. it was in the house also used as a daycare center. nine dogs were so badly hurt they had to have surgery. >> this is a difficult one to completely sum up given the carnage and what you've seen on these poor dogs but then when you add to it this was going on within feet of a daycare center, there was a swing set. within less than ten feet there was a log the dogs were chained to. it is very unsettling to put it lightly. >> ten kids were at the home when deputies arrived there. three people have been charged

with felony dogfighting. the filmmakers who prompted a federal investigation of a.c.o.r.n. are getting slapped with a lawsuit. they posed as a pimp and prostitute and secretly taped conversations with a.c.o.r.n. employees. the community organizing group says those tapes broke wiretapping laws and seriously damaged their reputation. correspondent richard lui joins us now. there's new fallout from the videos. >> there has been fallout. good morning to you. the irs and the u.s. census bureau are the latest groups to distance themselves from a.c.o.r.n. the irs saying it will no longer include it in the tax assistance program. although a.c.o.r.n. says it had suspended its tax program. the census bureau has cut ties with the group and growing pressure for president obama as well to deny all federal funding to a.c.o.r.n. >> okay. so, richard, what does a. krc t a.c.o.r.n. say about all of this? >> they're concerned about it. the head of a.c.o.r.n. saying

she is just as appalled but despite the funding cuts the organization will still continue to operate. meantime, a.c.o.r.n. is announcing a hiring freeze and new training programs for employees. they hired the attorney general to conduct an internal investigation into what happened. police are enlisting trash collectors to fight crime. the sheriff's office in orlando is training them to look out for suspicious people and signs of break-ins and giving them specific information about investigations to help them know what to watch out for. everyone seems to be onboard with the program. >> we get to see a lot more than other people get to see. >> i think it's a great idea. i don't see many cops around here anyway. the neighborhood seems quiet enough. we could still use a patrol around here to keep an eye on everything. >> police are training public works employees and heating and air conditioning workers. what an interesting idea there.

so people collecting your garbage could be crime fighting as well. >> i love it. >> it's like the whole neighborhood getting involved. >> an extra tip around christmasti christmastime. what's going on? let me show you what's happening on a thursday. the focus point of rain again across the midwest all the way down to texas. it's not all unwelcome. texas needs the rain. they will get more of that action this morning. you zoom into the area that needs it the hardest around austin to san antonio, just broken showers. houston itself, the line of rain moves in shortly so they get a couple of delays because of that. to the north further, you can see the rain stretching in to missouri. st. louis covered up with rain and that's the way it will be morning into afternoon. here is the reason why. everything is moving from the south. if you had the rain now, most likely it's going to train over you for at least the next 6 to 12 hours. you see the way it goes for memphis. not a lot of lightning being picked up right now so the rain could be heaveny. once you get the storms, the rain will become a little on the heavy side but right now st. louis a solid sheet of rain.

without bond. he says he wants to be executed right away so he can be buried with his family when they're buried on saturday. well, your home could actually be making you sick. a new study finds one in three homes in the u.s. cities have at least one problem that could be hazardous to your health. that includes water leaks, peeling paint or rodents. water leaks can cause mold that can trigger allergies and asthma and peeling paint could expose you or your children to lead paint. environmentalists may have gotten you to recycle and reuse water bottles. well, now they're heading for the bathroom. according to "the washington post" they want to you give up your super soft toilet paper. they say you should be using tissue used from 100% recycled paper. now it's a tough sell, though. toilet paper makers say super soft tissue is a big seller. no! what? >> you said it's a tough sell

but it's a rough sell. it's not recycled, is it? $700 billion of your tax dollars that went to bail out the banks and other financial institutions, well, we're probably not getting all of that money back, right, jen? >> i'm sure that a lot of americans suspected that from the start but that is the word from the man whose job is to watchdog the program. he's a special inspector for the t.a.r.p. he will testify today. there are reports he's planning to say, yes, you've heard the headlines that some of the big banks pay back the money with interest and we made a profit. we, the taxpayers, are not going to get all our $700 billion back. he said, yes, the rescue has stabilized the market but he was critical, too. he thinks the treasury has been much too secretive with what's happening. your credit score can make such a big difference in terms

of bhakd of house you can get, cars. the banks are changing the rules. the new scoring is called fico 08. it takes into account how much of your credit you're spending more because the banks are saying, look, we can see the more you're spending of your kr credit the riskier you are. they want to have the most realistic gauge of your krcredi score, how risky you are. this could mean a lower score because we talk so much about how lenders are cutting your credit line. say you can borrow up to $10,000 but they cut it to $5,000, you still might owe $5,000 so the percentage goes way up and your credit score goes down. something to keep in mind, another reason to pay off that revolving credit. you don't want to keep that balance month to month. >> good point, jen, thank you. so this is a story that everyone is talking about right now. actress mackenzie phillips now

tv actress mackenzie phillips talked with oprah winfrey about her claim she had sex for years with her father. john phillips, of course. now we told you about this yesterday. phillips says she hopes she is helping someone else by telling her story. >> i went to my father and i said, look, we need to talk about how you raped me. and my dad said, raped you? don't you mean when we made love? and, um, in that moment i thought, wow, i'm really on my own here. >> mackennedy's former stepmother says he was incapable of having sex with his own child and his second wife says whether the story is delusional or not it's very hurtful for the family.

over to meteorologist bob van dillen for a look at the air travel update. you're hopping on a plane or dropping somebody off. so far so good no delays. keep in mind it's only 6:45 eastern time. what about the delays today? we're looking at about half hour to an hour delay around st. louis because of the showers moving in right now. memphis, the rain is overhead as well. watch for some delays. dallas, some showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. a half hour delay. houston, the same thing. a half hour delay. so far nothing out there now. they might catch a morning delay because of low clouds. more on that in a bit. here are the stories making headlines. the oil industry is on a hot streak. "the new york times" reports there have been more than 200 new oil discoveries in dozens of countries. and there may actually be water on the moon. the "l.a. times" reports that data from three spacecraft shows that a thin film of water coats the surface of the soil, at

least in some places, and it could be a big fine for colonizing the moon some day. can you imagine that? and "usa today" says republican campaign committees outraised democrats by $1.7 million last month. it apparently got a boost in the heated debate over health care. and there are connoisseurs of fine wine and colas. tens of thousands of people visit dublin, be texas, every year in search of dr. pepper. it's the only place you can find the drink made with real sugar instead of high fruk toes corn syrup. dublin has been making it since 1981. other colas are catching on. a limited edition real sugar version this year and coke's sugar only kosher version is a fast seller around passover time. tiger woods and 29 other golfers will tee off for a shot at $10 million. i want to jump in on that but

i'd have no shot. here's rafer weigel with more. this is golf's last pga tournament of the year and the winner of this -- the winner of it all will win $10 million. if you win the fedex cup. now that is good news for the golfers and people living in the atlanta area. east lake country club, there it is, drying off. tiger woods took in practice wednesday. he leads in the point standings coming in. he's had a wild year. he didn't win a major. winning this would be a good way to cap off the year. bob says it will rain saturday and sunday. we'll see. speaking of golf, four pennsylvania men are celebrating their 40th straight year of golfing together at myrtle beach in south carolina. they started going there once a year in 1970. back then it was $25 a day for everything. room, food, and golf. so as a thank you, the members club in grand dunes and other courses are giving them a free round of golf plus they are flying there for free. after 40 years you get the 40th
