good morning! how are you? let me fix my little ear piece here. i'm robin meade. it's been a long time since i've been with you, it feels like. we're ready for the week ahead. let's get you ready now. first, thousands of children have bad reactions to commonly used drugs every year. some even end up in the hospital. so, there's this new study that is warning parents to exercise extreme caution. we'll talk about that. academy award-winning director roman polanski now is in custody. what could happen to him for a sex-related case that goes back to the '70s? and a new poll that says that walmart best symbolizes the

united states. interesting look into american culture that also has people talking about george clooney, millionaires and president obama. interesting. first, though, our top story. iran says it successfully tested the longest range missile in its arsenal overnight. state-run tv reports that missiles can hit targets up to 1,250 miles away. that means that u.s. bases in the middle east, israel, and places like moscow and athens are in the range. still, the white house says, diplomacy is the best way to deal with iran. >> the reality is, there is no military option that does anything more than buy time. the estimates are one to three years or so. as i say, while you don't take options off the table, i think there's still room left for diplomacy. >> the tests come days after iran announced it has a second nuclear facility that it had not even acknowledged before.

iran says it's for peaceful purposes. u.s. officials are calling it the strongest possible sanctions against iran if the facility is being used to make nuclear weapons. the u.s. wants iran to give international inspectors full access to that facility. more than half a million kids in the united states have dangerous reactions to common drugs like pen siicillin every year. kids under the age of 5 are affected the most. ra rashes and stomach aches, but 5% of the kids were hospitalized. researchers say that parents should pay close attention when their kids take a new medicine for the first time. chicago police are using amateur video of a 16-year-old boy being beaten to death to search for suspects. it was chaos. people blame gang violence for the brawl that killed darion

albert. four people are being questioned. >> i don't understand how 16, 17-year-old kids, how you can just stand over someone's body and just constantly beat them and stomp them to death. >> how awful. darion albert's family says the honor roll student was attacked thursday, because he would not join a neighborhood gang. still, others say he simply may have been a bystander in the wrong place at the wrong time. parents say he wants people to see the video if it helps identify who beat him up. you can expect the obama administration to make a big push for longer and more school days for your kids. the president and the education secretary say that american kids need to keep up with kids in other nations. nearly two dozen schools in massachusetts added hours to the school day and officials say the early results are positive. other schools have added three to four-week summer programs. what do you think? is more time in school time well spent for your kids or is enough

>> more favre jerseys sold at this hour. thank you. what a story here. oscar-winning director roman polanski could be extradicted to the united states on a decades-old warrant. his arrest is getting a lot of attention on cnn.com by you. he plead guilty in 1977 to having sex with a 13-year-old girl, but fled to france before he was sentenced. swiss authorities arrested him friday as he entered the country to be honored at a film festival. >> this is, for me, a shock, and i'm ashamed to be swiss, that swiss is doing such a thing to a brilliant, fantastic genius. >> earlier this year, a california judge rejected a request to throw out polanski's case even though his victim supported it. he says she says bringing the case up over and over again only causes more pain for her and her family. polanski already paid her an

undisclosed settlement. lot of news happening for a monday. don't you think? five minutes after the hour. i was reading this morning, and i didn't have time to check in with bob, about a really strong cold front that's coming in. that means a lot of wind for the midwest. >> huge. >> yeah. >> good to see you again on a monday. >> thanks. my book tour. >> got to do it. i'm surprised you're still awake, to be honest with you. you're burning it at both ends. big low pressure region, developing low pressure area sliding down into the northern great lakes. she's right, a lot of wind behind that. powerful cold front slides right through the midwest. look at the showers and thunderstorms out ahead of that front. wind advisories as well. 30 to 45-mile-per-hour winds is what you'll find with winds gusting to near 60, especially across western parts of michigan, that's where the wind will be located and be strongest. strong thunderstorms around cleveland stretching all down into the south to mansfield and

then severe thunderstorm warning outside of pittsburgh as this one line moves east. this line itself is actually moving to the east at 55 miles per hour, tapping into the upper levels of the atmosphere. winds gusting there to over 60 around that severe thunderstorm. watch that. heavy rain around cheboygan. more rain into western new york. squall line into lake erie. a sink hole just outside of atlanta. police had to block off the intersection. look at that car that's basically gone. >> it looks like the sink hole has made the perfect size for the car. >> specifically for that car. duluth had three inches of rain, on top of the 15 to 20 around the region earlier in the week. more on that, robin, in a little bit. >> thank you. >> yeah. we're hearing what people think best symbolizes america. here's a hint. it ain't apple pie or baseball.

service and you want to salute them, go to cnn.com/robin. dangerous floods are forcing people from their homes and devastating entire areas in the philippines. more than 100 people have died. look at that video. people are holding on for their lives on floating debris. that would be awful. rescuers are trying to reach families waiting on rooftops for help. thousands of people don't have water, food or electricity among all that water. officials say it is the worst flooding in 40 years. more than half of the people would support taxing the incomes of the country's wealthiest millionaires by 50% or more. that's from a new 60 minutes vanity fair poll. other interesting tidbits, overwhelming majority thinks walmart best symbolizes america. also, men would rather be george clooney for a week rather than president obama. the first lady was, though, the number one choice for women.

what's that? >> of course they would rather be george clooney. they're men. >> people are looking for a job, and obviously you know that they're facing grim odds. our money expert, jennifer westhoven says you may be looking at the worst job market in a long time. we've had a hunch about this, jen. >> yeah. >> what evidence do you have? >> at least you know what you're facing. a lot of people -- you get depressed. you really are facing some of the hardest times to find a job since 2000. that's just because they started keeping records then. there are now, for every job opening, there are six people trying to get a job. that's from "the new york times," citing the labor department this morning. overall, we've got almost 15 million americans officially out of work and only about 2.5 million job openings out there, right? you can see the big imbalance. that's why it's really hard right now. you've really got to be out there. some experts say have a plan.

be positive. other experts say, look, yeah, but the job market is just not going to heal very quickly. it's not going to snap up because companies are being so cautious. so, let's get you to some good news in a bad economy. that is the price of gas, at least if you're out there, job hunting. it costs less to fill your tank to get to the interviews. they are down $2.50 is the new aaa national average. it may be different where you live, but it should be about 11 cents cheaper than what you were paying last month. lundberg says it's because fewer people aren't driving. they're being more careful with the recession and jobless rate. >> still counting pennies, for sure. thanks. who says venggies have to b boring? a michigan woman is growing her love for vegetables into a growing company. stephanie elam explains how. >> a life changing decision at a young age. >> i was 14 years old when i became a vegetarian.

iran has successfully tested long-range missiles that could potential lit hit u.s. military bases in the middle east. iran's state-run tv reports that the country tested two types of missiles overnight that could hit targets up to 1,250 miles away. iran tested several others during military exercises over the weekend. every year, more than half a million kids are treated for bad reactions to commonly used drugs. a new study in pediatrics says that children under age 5 often get rashes, stomach problems from aspirin and antibiotics. be cautious when giving kids new

good morning. it is 20 minutes after the hour if you're thinking, i wonder how much time i've got. a store clerk in arizona was attacked by a robber with a crowbar. a vicious attack was captured on camer camera. >> oh, god. >> wow! it looks like the perp struck a second time when she tried to stop the robber. the clerk is okay, but the suspect got away with about $200 in cash. a tiny car company backed by former vice president al gore got a government loan for more than half a billion dollars. jennifer westhoven has details

on the loan and why some people are outraged. >> yeah. >> what gives? >> what's your smell test on this? what do you think about this? $529 million of your money, your taxpayer money loaned out to help build a hybrid car. we ain't talking about a regular hybrid, but a sports car that costs $90,000. it's going to be made in finland and it's a company connected to the former vice president. wall street journal is reporting on the loan that has some groups really outraged. they say this is your money being spent on a car called the karma, a status symbol for rich people to park it in their driveway. they say they are working on a more affordable sedan and often new technology starts out more expensive. but if we could get this loan, it could become more and more affordable and everyone could afford it. we shall see. >> smell test. bernie madoff's family in

the crosshairs, being sued for $198 million. this is by the court-appointed trustee. this isn't anything criminal. the trustee, though, you can imagine, wants to get every dime he can get for the victims, right? he's in charge of all the money to get split up between the victims. madoff, cheating thousands of families out of their savings. the trustee told "60 minutes" last night he will sue his two sons, niece and his brother, basically alleging since they worked with him, they should have known what's going on so that negligence, breach of fiduciary duty. the sons have said they are innocent, they didn't know anything about this and were separate to the division that was up to the no good. robin, back to you. >> hey, thanks. your social security will be in a bind for at leaf the next two years. that's because the system will pay out more money than it collects from taxes. now, that hasn't happened since the early 1980s.
