. hey, good morning. you awake yet? i think i'm waking up, too. i'm natasha curry in for robin meade. she's on assignment today. murder charges in the beating death of a high school student, and police say one of the suspects is giving them some chilling details about what happened. also, oscar-winning director roman polanski is sitting in jail facing two extremes. he could be sent to the u.s. to face charges or he could be set free. new details in the case today. the pope delivered a big speech, but don't ask anybody about what he said. they were focused on something itsy and bitsy. our top story.

one of the suspects accused of killing a chicago honors student has admitted to jumping on the boy's head while he was lying on the ground. that's from the state attorney. four teenagers have now been charged with first-degree murder in the gruesome death. one of them is a juvenile. 16-year-old darrion albert was beaten to death after being hit over the head. here's his picture, and his mother said he was headed for college. >> he was a good boy. >> he had no problems. >> not a gang banger? >> no. >> we're not saying this is a gang-related incident. right now it appears you had a young man making attempts to go home. >> he was trying to help out his friend. he was at the wrong place at the wrong time. >> we're going to warn you you may find this video disturbing here. police say they're looking for three more suspects involved in this attack that was caught on a cell phone. increased controls were set up

in the neighborhood and there were 290 shootings in chicago schools last year. 34 kids were killed. a suspect in a 9/11 anniversary bomb plot heads to federal court later today. najibullah zazi heads to court saying he conspired to use weapons of destruction. he was caught on video buying beauty products that could be used to make home mbombs. they were allegedly headed for the new york city area. they're hoping to bring the olympics to the windy city in 2016. here's rafer. >> yeah, they're sending in the big guns to try to make the windy city the first choice. they got an olympic send-off at chicago o'hare last night. they have just likely arrived in

copenhagen. jackie joyner-kersey will join the president. they said with the president and the first lady going, they're likely to get the games. >> i think they're high impact, i think their presentation will be very personal given they know and love chicago so well, and i think they'll talk about the olympic spirit and the olympic movement and why we think chicago would be the perfect place to host the olympic games. >> they'll make that call on friday in the morning about 11:00 a.m. eastern. we'll have more sports in about ten minutes. >> so why not chicago? >> why not? so roman polanski's lawyer filed a motion for the director's release from the swiss prison. the oscar winner was arrested on friday for a 1997 sex crime.

back then polanski pleaded guilty to having sex with a 13-year-old girl but fled to france before sentencing. french and polish officials are urging switzerland to let him free on bail. otherwise, he could spend months in jail fighting extradition to the u.s. the secret service is trying to figure out who put a poll on facebook asking if president obama should be killed. the positive responses were yes, no, maybe, and yes if he cuts my health care. the secret service took it down yesterday along with a third-party application that lets people create polls. the obama poll was made available to everyone on facebook. the aclu is starting a plan to put up cameras all around sacramento. the group says it would be an invasion of privacy and there is no proof they would stop or lower crime. a lot of people around the city, however, support the idea. >> if there's a camera in front of them, they might not be doing the bad things they're doing out

here. one isn't going to do the trick. if people are getting bust oed camera, it would probably help. >> the cameras would be paid for by a $16 million grant by home security. the decision will be made tonight. us airways, sully guided his plane into the hudson river, and that was after losing both engines to bird strikes. all 155 people on board survived. so definitely a hero there. a security specialist for john travolta testified that he told his boss about an alleged demand for $25 million days after travolta's son died. two people, including a paramedic, are accused of threatening to release a document that travolta signed unless he paid up.

the document was kind of like a liability form if the family refused to send jett travolta to the hospital in the bahamas after his seizure. travolta is expected to testify again. yesterday we told you about a georgia man whose car was swallowed up by a sinkhole. it turns out he was victimized not once, but twice. someone actually broke into his car while it was still in this hole. recent rain that pounded georgia probably caused the ground to buckle here. >> i said, where is the car? and he said, in the hole. and i felt like my breath was taken away because just the thought his car had been swallowed by the ground and he got out of it was a mamazing to. >> the victim was also told it was his responsibility to get the car out. it's been in that sinkhole for three days. >> how do you get it out? how many tow trucks does it take to get it out? will they get it out?

the great lakes region has something going on here. bob, what's the latest on that? >> i'm watching the showers come in on lake ontario and erie, too. you see that sweep going on through picking up heavy rain now. just east of buffalo, getting into the finger lakes as well. yesterday we had some rough weather go through the buffalo area. that was ahead of a cold front. even the coast guard reported 59-mile-per-hour wind gusts. you see massive trees down. those are big, beautiful houses, too. they had wind gusting to 60 miles per hour. today about 35-mile-per-hour wind gusts. syracuse, you can see that rain coming from the north, heavy rain from lake ontario. that will slide down the throughway, so a tough commute no matter how you slice it. a cold front has passed through gainesville, so it's going to be

someone who complained she wasn't following the protocol. the white house may take another step to housing in the white house. who will benefit from this money? >> it could help middle class get reasonable terms on a mortgage because it would fund state housing agencies. basically, those agencies, they usually help a lot of people, but they've been frozen by the credit crunch that's affected so many of us and businesses, they just couldn't lend any more. one take-away from this story is more help for families. the other take-away is even though the government is starting its exit plan on some of these big emergency programs, it is still too afraid that the housing market's in trouble, that it's remaining there and trying to provide aid and

about to disclose the existence of that operation, and iran continues its defiance this week, testing missiles capable of hitting israel. they are accused of holding up six banks in a single week in three states. heather brown is accused of telling bank tellers she had a bomb but investigators never found any explosives. brown is on probation for a 2006 robbery. it's extremely rare for women to rob banks. you probably don't want to take a look at your 401(k). jennifer westhoven, a lot of really bad things followed that day. >> financially speaking, if you remember this day last year, it didn't just affect people with 401(k)s, it affected everyone

because it hit their confidence. a 777-point plunge. people were just nauseated by the time the closing bell rang. a lot of fear that the financial world was near collapse, we might be headed for another great depression, and basically this great drop came right after the house rejected the government's bailout plan, the plan to do something about that. they did pass that later on, but all those fears driving the dow sharply to 6500 by march. since the financial system, maybe the economy hasn't recovered but the financial system has stabilized, and that's what has allowed the dow to come back from that 6500 level up to not quite 10,000, but we're getting closer to it. natasha, back to you. >> does that mean basically the people who lost all that money could be getting it back by now? >> if they didn't sell out of fear. a lot of people went way down and said, i got to get out of here, i got to keep my money. they wouldn't have gotten as

what may be happening today. because the government is not going to let the fdic fail, they're looking at options to save it, and they may ask the banks today to come up with three years of future fees early. as you can imagine, banks don't like that, but it is a sign of the extraordinary times we're living in. the fdic is supposed to be baling out the banks, right? you know that, if your bank goes over, you're guaranteed x amount of dollars? but in this case, the banfdic i asking the banks to bail its out. they want to make sure they stabilize their 95 banks this year. it's not that the big merger might affect you in your daily life. what you should know is when these big billion-dollar mergers are happening. it's a sign of confidence by the leaders of these companies that

the u.s. customs chief says that organized crime just lost a lot of money. this month colombia and mexico seized $41 million in drug money sent from the u.s. it was smuggled in in shipping containers full of fertilizer

chemicals. >> this seizure represents a bad day for organized crime. $41 million is not a rounding error. the loss of that kind of money hurts. it's $41 million that can't be used to fuel further crime, to buy guns, to pay lieutenants to further corrupt the process. >> u.s. customs officials call this one of the largest cash seizures and a sign of cooperation in drug investigations. the aclu is fighting a plan to put up dozens of police cameras around sacramento. the group says that the cameras would be an invasion of privacy and there's no proof that they would stop or lower crime. a lot of people around the city, however, support the idea. >> people know there's a camera in front the of them, they may not do the bad things they're doing. if you have a bunch of them and people are getting busted on the cameras, it will probably help. >> the cameras would be paid for by a $615,000 grant from homeland security.

the city plans to discuss the matter tonight. police in north carolina are searching for a family missing since last week. 12-year-old keira hess is pregnant and due to deliver her baby any day now. keira, her 11-year-old sister seeary ra and their father matthew were last seen thursday. police are worried that keira might not be getting the medical attention that she needs. >> they're going to have to surface at some point in time. they're going to need food. keyer ra is going to go into labor. they'll need baby supplies. so i feel at this point, yes, we'll find them, that they'll be hopefully okay. >> matthew does have legal custody of the girls. police say there may be complications with keira's pregnancy and they don't know if hess realizes that. a security specialist for john travolta testified that he told his boss about an alleged demand for $25 million days after travolta's son died. two people, including a paramedic, are accused of

threatening to release a document that travolta signed unless he paid up. the document was like a liability form if the family refused to send jett travolta to the hospital in the bahamas after he had a seizure. travolta is expected to testify again. yesterday we told you about a georgia man whose car was swallowed up you by this big sinkhole. turns out he was victimized twice. someone broke into his car here while it was still in this hole. the recent rain in northern georgia probably caused the ground to buckle. >> i said, where is the car? he said, in the hole. and i felt like my breath was taken away because just the thought that his car had been swallowed by the ground and he got out of it, was amazing to me. >> and the victim says he was told it's his responsibility to get the car out of the sinkhole. the sinkhole has been here for three days. actual youly, the car has been in the sinkhole for three days.

make sure it can make good on that promise. our money expert jennifer westhoven is here. jen, should we be worried about the fdic running short on cash? >> no, but it's been in the headlines lately that their finances are getting destabilized because they've had so much to deal with. imagine that the irs said to you, we'd like three years of your income taxes early. it's a little like what's happening. the governmentnot going to let the fdic fail. they'll ask the banks to cough up three years of fees early. the fdic is supposed to bail out banks. now asking the banks to bail it out because so many small and midsized banks have failed, 95 so far this year. it's had to shell out a lot of money. wants to make sure it keeps the system stable. here's something that gave the dow a boost. there's the dow, up 124 points, not quite to 9800. getting closer and closer to

that mark. pulled away from some of the highs, but a rally yesterday after some very big mergers. the big mergers may not affect you day to day, but they're a sign that the credit market is improving, they're able to borr borrow money to finance the deals and their leaders have faith that the economy ask is going to grow. that's good news in a bad economy. this is a starbucks you don't have to stand in line for. it is rolling out its own line of instant coffee across the country. it's called via. they'll settlement sell this at. i don't know if you can just buy the packets to take home. they'll sell it at costco, target, starbucks. is that like folgers? i'm going with the home brew.

it's just pennies. but, you know, different strokes. money especially tight for a lot of fraels these days. what happens when your kids' school asks you you to fok over cash, like 500 bucks for a camera for photography class? some say they're breaking the law asking for that.

first, our top story. one of the suspects accused of killing a chicago honor student has admitted to jumping on the boy's head while he was lying on the ground. that's from the state attorney. fourte teens have been charged first degree murder. 16-year-old derrion albert was beaten to death after being hitten over the head. his mother said he was headed for college. >> an honor student. he loved school. >> good boy? >> yeah. never problematic. >> we're not saying this is a gang-related incident. right now this appears that you had a young man that's making attempts to go home. >> trying to help out his friend. he was at the wrong place at the wrong time. >> we want to warn you, you may find this video really disturbing. police say they're looking for three more suspects involved in the attack that was caught right here on a cell phone.

next 30 minutes. wow. this just in. home prices are starting to head higher again. our money expert jennifer westhoven's here with that new data. >> i just want to give you a gauge that just came out in the past few minutes of the housing market. and it looks all right. it says that home prices rose in all of the 20 major markets that it tracks. now, they road. that's month to month. they are really zooming in to make this good news. but it is some good news in a bad economy for anybody trying to buy or sell a home. it's really close up. july improved compared to june. but prices have been stabilizing. they've been steady for six months in a row now. still sharply down from last year. down about 14% compared to last july. again, u-turning up from the bottom a bit. that's helpful if you've got a home. at cnn and hln we want to make sure you get the news you want wherever you are. cnn's unveiling the new cnn

17 minutes past the hour. two u.s. service members were killed trying to get supplies for a school in the philippines. a u.s. navy captain says their vehicle rolled over a land mine on the island of jolo. they say the area is home to several islamic militant groups with some ties to al qaeda. that is the british navy sinking an alleged drug boat. the defense ministry says it

found about $380 million worth of cocaine on that fishing boat you're seeing right there in the water. of course, the crew was taken off before all of this started happening here. it was intercepted off south america's coast. the ministry says that the boat was acting suspiciously in an area known for drug trafficking. wow. roman polanski's lawyer filed a motion today for the director's release from a swiss prison. the oscar winning director was arrested saturday for a 1970s sex crime. back then polanski pleaded guilty to having sex with a 13-year-old girl, but fled to france before sentencing. french and polish officials are urging switzerland to let him free on bail. otherwise he could spend months in jail fighting extradition to the u.s. after spending $1.2 billion on a new stadium, the dallas cowboys got their first regular season win in their new home. here's rafer weigel with that story. >> and, natasha, there is so

much pressure to win in dallas. and this texas-size stadium only seems to add to those texas-size expectations. but america's team got their first win on america's most expensive stage when they beat carolina 21-7. they did it with their defense. very uncharacteristically for them lately. they were actually booed by their own fans before they bounced back. tony romo looked very tense the entire game. owner jerry jones will be happy for a week. it's another edition of this day in twitter. this could be a reoccurring theme. texas tech coach mike leach banned his entire team from the social networking site after a player criticized him on it. new york jets coach rex ryan banched a receiver against tennessee after clouny tweeted he wasn't getting enough playing time. that's how you get more playing time. complain about it. you wouldn't want to tweet something you wouldn't say to your boss's face. do coaches have a right to ban

"tonight show" host conan o'brien was the butt of his own jokes last night. he talked about an injury that sent him to the hospital last week.

conspireing to use weapons of mass destruction. authorities say zazi and at least two other men stockpiled ingredients to make bombs and were allegedly targeting mass transit in the new york city area. at least 23 people have been killed in vietnam here by a typhoon. look at this flooding. that's according to the associated press. the storm made landfall today with winds up to 104 miles per hour. some 200,000 people have been evacuated. disaster officials are warning about possible flooding and mud slides. those are the top stories. welcome back. it's tuesday. i'm natasha curry in for robin meade today. she's on assignment. hope you're having a great morning so far. in about 30 minutes we could see the key fight in the health care debate. whether to include government paid insurance. the senate finance committee will discuss the so-called public option. lots of liberal democrats want it. but moderate democrats don't. and so far not a single republican supports it except senator olympia snowe, of course, of maine. she would add it, but only if

private insurers got too expensive. the white house is pushing for new sanctions on iran. it's trying to round up international support for penalties against companies that do business in the country. especially in energy, financial, and communications industries. those penalties would kick in if iran refuses to come clean about what it's doing with its nuclear program. >> this is an important day and an important week for the iranians. they have decisions to make. they have one of two paths that they can take. they can continue the path that they've been on. or it can make a decision to step away from its nuclear weapons program. >> iran has just admitted it is operating a second nuclear facility to enrich uranium. that came just before international inspectors were about to disclose the existence of that operation. iran continued its defiance this week.

it test-fired missiles capable of reaching israel. a 911 operator in massachusetts got a call he wasn't ready for. people were reporting a fire at his home. he says he made the callers repeat the address. and even then he just couldn't believe it. >> i'm like are you sure? are you sure on the address? it's surreal. you don't believe. you hear it. and it's not registering. >> yeah. his parents also live in that apartment building. he says they all lost everything. but fortunately no one got hurt. police have arrested a suspected bank robber who was accused of holding up six banks in just a single week. heather brown is accused of telling bank tellers that she had a bomb. but investigators never found any explosives. these banks were in three new england states. she's only charged with one robbery right now. fbi statistics show it is extremely rare for women to rob banks.

monthly increase. prices remain at 2003 levels but are slow le making a comeback. a pair of highly anticipated new product launches. starbucks is rolling out its via, instant coffee drink nationwide into canada as it tries to break into the multibillion dollar instant coffee market. dell unveiled what it calls the world's thinnest and lightest 16 inch laptop. the latitude z is less than an inch thick, weighs under five pounds. but it does come with a hefty price tag starting at 2,000 bucks. finally, us airways most famous employee is getting a promotion. well deserved. captain chesley sully sullenberger will return and join the airlines flight operations safety management team as well as return to its regular flight schedule. you can bet everyone will want to fly on sully's flights.

a 24-year-old woman's family is handing out fliers in california hoping that someone can help them find her. mitrice richardson went missing september 16th. that's when police say she was arrested for not having enough money to pay for her dinner. she also allegedly had marijuana on her. richardson disappeared after being released. her father made a plea for her safe return. >> you can never do no wrong in my eyes. so if you had a meltdown, come holler at me. we can always sit down and talk about it. >> now, richardson's family also says that she was acting strange and may have been emotionally distressed. okay. do you get confused about this like i do? when is a good time to bank on those rebates for stuff you buy? hln money expert clark howard says he has a strategy so you

role in his arrest. in trying to get his sentence orr turned, his lawyers contended there had been no real efforts to arrest polanski in the last 30 years. a disturbing report from the ""chicago tribune"" here details violent attacks against the elderly by mentally ill patients. the state uses nursing homes to house mental patients including 82 convicted killers and 179 sex offenders. from "usa today," drivers ed may be making an comeback. more states require 16-year-olds to take drivers ed before getting their license. even so only 15% of eligible students take drivers ed compared to 95% in the '70s. guess what, folks. we have an exciting addition to our primetime lineup coming your way. it starts tonight. yet it still happened. we're talking about usc running back stephen johnson. he's in critical but stable condition according to a hospital spokesman after dropping a weight bar on his throat while he was bench pressing. reportedly, it was 275 pounds when it slipped out of his hand. he did have a spotter. he was treated for crushing injuries to his neck and larynx. he was in surgery for more than seven hours. the hospital is now saying that while his season is likely over doctors are expecting him to make a full recovery. that's good news. more athletes getting in trouble for twitter. texas tech coach mike leach banned his entire team from using the social networking site after a player criticized him on it. and then you've got new york jets coach rex ryan, who benched a receiver, david cloe nii against tennessee after he tweeted he wasn't getting enough playing time. that's how you get playing time. not smart on the players' part but do coaches have the right to ban it? text your thoughts or e-mail us to cnn.com/robin. we've got a facebook page. mike until tampa texted us,
