and $27 million worth of fine art gone. hear about a mysterious heist that has the owner completely baffled. a powerful ertd quake has hit western indonesia. the magnitude is 7.9d. there is a tsunami watch going on for indonesia, malaysia and samoa. this all happened after a tsunami hit samoa and american samoa and killed 80 people. an earthquake triggered three separate tsunami waves that left villages under water. people are desperate to find out anything they can about home. >> i'm hurt, you know. i'm hurt for them because they're my people.

and this is especially for the older folks, my children. >> now, here is a map so you can get a better idea of the area we're talking about here. people on the islands said the tsunami was so strong, it twisted concrete beams and mangled cars. some people on the island could be without electricity for up to a month. look at this. the pictures are devastating. well, the president's health care plan has taken a major hit. they opposed the idea of government-run health insurance in the plan. they said the only way to get it through is maybe to drop that provision. there are two more hurdles coming possibly today. they are going to beef up the language preventing illegal immigrants to get subsidized

health care and another to make sure there are no funding for illegal abortions. a beating death of a 16-year-old boy and $16,000 reward money is on the table right now. investigators have asked the secret service to enhance this amateur video of that fight that killed darrion albert. they said they may charge people that participated in the fight even if they didn't come into contact with albert. >> the culture of no snitch is unacceptable. on thursday, an innocent young man with a promising future lost his life. he lost it to senseless violence, yet few have come forward. we must do better. >> so far, four teens are charged with first-degree murder. the mothers of two of them spoke out in their defense yesterday. >> that's not my baby. >> they had to defend themselves. and the young man that lost his

life wasn't just standing there, he was fighting also. >> police say they're going to increase patrols before and after classes. chicago public schools will also offer free bus service to some students. it's toyota's biggest u.s. recall ever for a potentially deadly problem that affects the top-selling camry and certain lexus models. our money expert jennifer westhoven is here. jennifer tell us about this. it's all about potentially deadly floormats. >> exactly. we're talking about potentially 4 million cars that are being recalled because the floor mat on the driver's side, it can creep up and then it can end up jamming down your accelerator pedal and suddenly your car is speeding up. there have been over 100 reports of this happening. five people have died, 17 people have been hurt. there have been 13 crashes, including a san diego off-duty highway patrolman, his family. if you have one of these cars, you want to take the mat out and go to the dealership. they're saying don't put in a

for a document travolta signed while he was trying to get help for his son. jett travolta died after a seizure. the document is a liability form for an ambulance company. yesterday travolta's lawyer testified that a paramedic told her the document could be detrimental to the actor's reputation. a 92-year-old woman celebrated her birthday by jumping out of an airplane. jane bostruck plummeted 13,000 feet in front of her children, grandchildren. her grandson said she got the idea after seeing president george w. bush skydive for his 80th birthday, and don't forget, our hln express robin meade was right alongside of him. she said she'd do it again, so we'll see what happens. >> i'm surprised he didn't die on the way down with george.

7.9. now there is a tsunami watch for indonesia, malaysia and thailand. we'll get you more updated information as it comes in. director roman polanski is given big name support and also kri criticism as he opposites in a jail in switzerland. he pleaded guilty years ago after having sex with a 13-year-old girl. >> more details on that. some big name hollywood directors are now rallying behind polanski, woody allen, martin scorcese, and they're saying he should be released immediately. they're among the ones who have filed a petition slamming his arrest. others are downplaying the seriousness of this crime. the director of the women's law center told the l.a. times, quote, it sends a message that the rich and powerful can get away with crimes that no one else can get away with, end

quote. now, this concern is over samantha gamer, which here is what she looked like years ago. 13 years old. polanski is accused of giving her a quaalude and is accused of raping her. she sued polanski and settled atten undisclosed sum. he was indicted on six counts and he agreed to plead guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse. we'll hear more about this story later. you'll hear about the legal battle going on now and why some say the original case may have been mishandled. now it's over to jennifer westhoven who is talking business. and jen, a california woman says the bank raised interest on her credit card for no good reason, but she didn't accept it very quietly, did she? >> this is one of those new court public opinions. we have stories like this where

people call the customer service line and nothing happens, and they say, oh, i'm making a video. enough. she says higher interest rates from 13 to 30%. she said she didn't break any rules but she called the bank and they wouldn't budge on this payment, so she took her rant to youtube. take a listen. it's a little rough for early in the morning, but we got the beeps in. >> you have reeped profits in your faulty scams. >> it worked. her video streemd more than 370,000 times. bank of america took notice. they aren't talking about the details but they worked out a resolution. and a lot of times they won't let the people discuss the details of it, either.

i don't know how long it will work, but maybe youtube could be your recourse. religious life may not be the same after the downturn. ilts putti it's putting a lot of congregations in financial turmoil. many religious groups were struggling before the recession. now you've got people in congregations moving away to find jobs. religious schools, catholic, jewish, christian, people just can't afford sending their kids to school there these days. the flip side, even though it may be a thinner crowd, they're more devoted to helping people in hard times. a man says he was hit by fees with champagne taste. his museum quality art collection vanished without a trace. you cannot believe some of the names, the masters of legends, whose paintings have now disappeared.

. a terrorism suspect accused of planning an attack in new york city has pleaded not guilty. nauj zajibullah zazi was arraig yesterday. he plotted to make explosives and possibly blow them up on the 9/11 anniversary a few weeks ago. >> he is expected to make the announcement at the national institutes of health. the money comes from recovery funds and should support tens of thousands of jobs. a former democratic fundraiser will spend more than 24 years in prison for fraud.

hsu swindled people out of $20 million and told some their money would be in jeopardy if they did not support candidates he supported. and some of the headlines we're following for you this morning. welcome back. i'm natasha curry. robin meade is on assignment today. we are following some breaking news right now of a powerful earthquake that hit western indonesia. the preliminary magnitude is 7.6. we're getting some video in right now. local media reports that several buildings are damaged. people were seen running out of their homes. the underwater quake is along the same fault line as the one that triggered a massive tsunami back in 2004. a tsunami watch is now in effect for the region. we've been telling you about the deadly tsunami that hit samoa. now we're getting better video from there. this turned up on youtube and

here's another look from one of our ireporters. >> now it's over here. a lot of debris on the roads. look over here. everything is just completely wiped out. >> at least 22 people were killed in american samoa. 55 died in samoa and seven in tonga. look at that, the roof just ripped right off. the u.s. would lose a lot of money if school closed because of swine flu. a new report shows it would cost the u.s. between 10 and $47 billion if all u.s. schools closed down for a month. the government told schools to close only as a last resort, but some schools have already shut down. director roman polanski is fighting to get out of jail in

switzerlan switzerland. authorities there arrested him decades after being sentenced for having sex with a 13-year-old girl. richard lui is following this whole legal battle for us. richard? >> polanski's legal team fired the first shot yesterday. they fired the request that polanski be set free as his case winds through the judicial system. they're holding him on a decades-old u.s. warranted for a 1 1977 sex charge involving a 13-year-old girl. he was originally indicted on six felony counts. before he fled, polanski pleaded guilty to a lesser charge, unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor. a little background on that, na taush taush a. >> thanks, richard. there's also a debate on how his case was handled years ago. >> polanski's legal team and prosecutors thought they had a

deal that would spare polanski from jail. but on the eve of polanski's sentencing, the judge said he was inclined to send polanski to prison, and recently another judge said he would consider the case if polanski showed up in court. well, the judge pointed out a case of a media-obsessed judge who was worried his image would suffer if he did not send polanski to prison. so the judge saying, quote, it's hard to contest some of the behavior in the documentary that was misconduct, end quote. new discoveries this morning in the caylee anthony case. a stain on caylee anthony's trunk liner appears to show a sill wet of a child. that's according to documents released yesterday. no dna was found in the stain. the documents also address other evidence found in anthony's dru trunk. nancy grace will have more on

those developments tonight at 8:00 eastern. the government wants to find ways to eliminate texting while driving. in about 90 minutes, safety experts and lawmakers will discuss ways to prevent highway deaths caused by texting and other electronic distractions. the institute for highway safety says 18 states have laws against texting while driving, and seven states have banned hand-held cell phones behind the wheel. a california art collector says thieves have robbed him of master pieces even a museum would envy. he said suddenly paintings disappeared from his home on sunday. we're talking van gogh, rembrandt, just to name a few. >> many people buy art. you have to hide it. you can't go public with it. you will go to jail if you get caught with it. >> the paintings were not

researchers find when they study what happened during the great depression, people actually lived longer who lived during those hard economic times. you could call that good news in a bad economy. good health is an unexpected benefit of hard times. researchers at the university of michigan studied the great depression and found that life expectancy rose by more than six years, and they were supposedly, you know, weeding out things like advances in medicine. they said it's because people with less work had fewer physical demands. remember, there was a lot more physical labor back then, too. they got more sleep, they spent more time with their family and friends, which can cut your stress levels, and they also had less money to spend on frivolous things like alcohol and tobacco that can end up causing health problems. if you're looking for work in this recession, here is some hope if you're trying to find some extra cash, trying to find a way to make ends meet. well, the holiday season is come and go that means a lot of retailers are going to be hiring. here's the latest on that.

there could be hope for three american hikers who were detained in iran. officials in iran says it is allowing a representative from the swiss government to meet with them to check on their condition. we have video of one of the hikers. they're accusing them of illegally crossing into iran from iraq. relatives have said they accidentally crossed an unmarked border. some health care workers in new york refuse to get the swine flu vaccine even though it may cost them their jobs. they had a rally in albany yesterday. the new law requires all health care workers to get vaccinated by october 30. but critics say they should not be forced to try it before everyone else. >> it's not just one step, it's one of many steps towards controlling the american people. >> there is no reason to force us to take a vaccine that's full of all kinds of ingredients that we don't want to put in our bodies. >> the cdc has said the vaccine

is safe, and health officials say most healthy adults will need only one dose. some people in fort myers, florida paid big bucks to get coffee essentially made from cat poo! yep, kitty poo. it comes from an animal that looks like a cat. it eats raw coffee beans, and you can figure out where they all end up. anyway, the workers gather those beans in honor of national coffee day. yesterday a coffee shop accidentally served up a 20-ounce cup of it for $20. >> sure, you have to pay the workers a lot to go through and get those coffee beans, i would think. >> good going, rafer. michael vick, he now calls himself an animal rights advocate and he warns people to stay away from dog fighting. rafer? >> vick was addressing a small crowd at a washington, d.c. church in one of the city's poorest neighborhoods, and he said dog fighting is pointless and he doesn't know why he

university of michigan say they studied the great depression, and life expectancy rose during that time by more than six years. i was real surprised to hear that this morning here you can see the difference. what the researchers said is that when people were working less, back then work was a lot more physical, so there was a lot less physical demand on their bodies. plus, they slept more since they weren't working as much. it also said they had less money to spend on alcohol and tobacco that can get you in trouble health-wise and it said they spent more time with family and friends, which apparently as rafer joked with me before -- >> for me, that would be more stress. >> but for many, it helped with stress. >> it takes years off my life. >> depends on the family. that could be some good news in a bad economy, right? it's an unexpected benefit that could come from the recession. if you're looking for extra work in this recession, extra money to help ends meet, the holidays are coming up, that means a lot of stores are going to be
