a second quake hit overnight about 150 miles from the worst devastation. now, we haven't heard of any injuries from that one. but yesterday's quake is blamed for more than 400 deaths. people were sleeping outside unprotected because their homes were destroyed. here's one coordinator explaining how the 2004 tsunami that ravaged the country is helping the government deal with this disaster. >> we were working indian hand and know each other well. we coordinate carefully like -- the government loaned us two planes this morning to fly in relief supplies. the government is coping well. on the ground, the local authorities such as the fire services, police are are doing a good job. i think what has come out of the tsunami operation is -- we have very good coordination in place. >> watch as rescuers freed one woman here from a collapsed building. people are digging through rubble with their barehands to

find survivors. poor thing. some are using twitter to locate lost loved ones. right now police are searching for a newborn snatched from a nashville home. the boy is six days old. here is his picture. investigators say the kidnapper posed as an immigration offer and showed up at the home which had a sign innocent front yard saying "it's a boy. "the suspect stabbed the mom nine times and stole the baby. maria now has a collapsed lung. >> translator: the only thing i remember is that -- that -- she went for help and when she came back the baby wasn't there anymore. her 3-year-old daughter was there. >> after the attack the mom ran for help. her neighbors saw a car speeding away from the house. the mom is said to be in stable condition. any changes to the military strategy in afghanistan won't be made for a couple of weeks. that's from white house spokesman robert gibbs.

president obama met with his national security team about that yesterday. the top u.s. koomder in afghanistan has said the situation isn't getting any better. and he is expected to request more troops. the national security team meets again about it next week. john travolta says extortionists were going to tell the media he was somehow responsible for his son's death. two people are charged with trying to extort $25 million from the actor in the bahamas. the case revolves around documents travolta signed after his son jett died earlier this year. in cross-examination yesterday, the actor said the defendants never contacted or threatened him directly. they pleaded not guilty. one game back had the nfl, michael vick back with nike? larry smith has the latest details on this. >> good morning. i was shock pd when i heard this. months out of prison on dogfighting charges, not only resumed his nfl career but also his career as a spokesman.

income in the united states, lake michigan provides a very picturesque setting. and, of course, you have star power. have you the president, first lady, and even oprah, as you know, will make her case for why which i economy should get the games. on the flip side, chicago by lesser known. many ioc members have never been to chicago. the u.s. could also bring a greater risk of terror threats, too. so some pros and cons for. >> did you what about the other cities in the running? who is chicago saying is the biggest competition right now? >> you might want to be there right now to enjoy the weather. rio de janeiro. there is a lot of buzz. south america never hosted the olympics, too. rio has the highest crime rate and most expensive bid. we are talking about billions of dollars when they take the estimates. madrid is the most ready with more than three-quarters of their venues built or under construction so far and have the most public support. european cities got the last two olympic bids. finally, we have tokyo and it has the most experience hosting

14 minutes past the hour. a second weaker quake hit near the tsunami battered samoa islands overnight but did not trigger more warnings of waves. the u.s. said two military cargo planes loaded with supplies to help people recover from tuesday's deadly tsunami. take a look at this here. this is american samoa. at least 139 people died. look at that truck. buried in the water there. officials say they could find more victims as rescuers reach remote villages. a florida democrat is refusing to apologize after saying the republican plan for health care is just calling for sick people to die quickly. republicans are blasting freshman representative alan grayson. one called his remarks despicable.

30 minutes after the hour. nashville police are searching for the person who stabbed a woman and then snched her newborn baby. the child is 6 days old. his mother was stabbed nine times. and suffered a collapsed lung. police say that the home had a sign out front reegd "it's a boy." the attacker came to the door claiming to be an immigration agent. yesterday's massive quake in indonesia killed more than 400 people. officials say that thousands more may be buried under the rubble. people are using chisels and even using their bare hands to search for survivors. ing a second weaker quake hit a different area of the island nation overnight. now we haven't heard of any injuries from that one.

state of michigan has a budget at least for now. overnight lawmakers approved a temporary 30-day budget. it was passed two hours after a government shutdown started. michigan is struggling with a $3 billion budget shortfall and the nation's highest unemployment rate. newly revealed nuclear facility in iran will be major topic today during a ming of the u.n. security council in switzerland. the u.s. i wants a watchdog group to have access to the site. one says washington is open to rare one-on-one talks with iranian diplomats. those are the headlines we are following. a busy one. welcome back. i'm natasha curry. robin meade is on assignment this thursday. democrats are saying they will get a health care reform bill on the floor of both houses within two weeks. it is a tall order. there's no agreement on whether they create a government paid insurance option and republican efforts to amend the bill

support has failed. president obama was working the phones yesterday trying to get more democrats to support the proposal. chicago police say they are fighting a code of silence as they try to track down more suspects in the beating death of a teenager. darion albert was an innocent bystander who was attacked during a gang fight. it was caught on tape as dozens of young people looked on here. last night on our sister network, cnn police superintendent vented his frustration. >> this young man was killed. the entire city is outraged and yet, we have gotten no tips, no calls. >> are you serious? no one? >> no one has called in that i'm aware of talking to detectives and provided us with any information. >> that's unbelievable to me when the offenders are teenagers and they are involved with other teenagers that go to the same school and no one calls in. we are literally getting killed by this code of silence, no-snitching rule. work hard to overcome.

gradually the north as well. it is getting in towards des moines where the showers and thundershowers outside of minneapolis and getting towards st. paul now. here is what it looks like. you see st. cloud, showers and thunderstorms. the line will race through the region and basically fall apart into the colder air mass. you still get the rain showers out of that by chicago and maybe even milwaukee and green bay later this afternoon. something we will be watching. severe thunderstorms are possible again. mainly the southern end of the cold front. around the gulf coast, stretching towards arkansas and back in towards northern parts and southern parts of missouri. it is something we will be watching. back over to the east we go. cold temperatures. air you see in dark purple below freezing. rinds freezing for the blue shaded areas. check out this photograph we have. typhoon parma. we got it yesterday afternoon, 90-mile-per-hour winds. into the philippines possibly as a super-typhoon. we hope that doesn't happen.

on network television is on the rise. gay and lesbian alliance against defamation released a report which reports 3% of actors on the networks this season will play gay, lesbian or bisexual characters. that number is slightly up from previous years. america's richest people are getting poorer. our money expert jennifer westhoven takes a look at "forbes" magazine list of the richest people in the u.s. "forbes" is saying how much did they lose last year n. >> maybe we want to say, you know, they got less rich. right? certainly these guys are nowhere in the poor league. >> true. >> very rough year. one of the editors called last year a billionaire bloodbath. they look at the 400 richest people in the world and lost 20% of their money. check out oprah winfrey. a big fall there. still worth a lot but lost $400 million in the latest year.

down to $141 billion bill gates, number one. 16 years. number two, warren buffett. millions of americans facing foreclosure have called their banks over and over. a lot of you guys called in to me to say we don't know what to do. banks weren't doing anything. there was no formula. people trying to find a way to keep their homes. new government report shows that some banks have stepped up when it comes to those mortgage changes that in some cases they are even reducing the principal. that is good news in a bad economy if you are a homeowner. it means that there is a better chance if they make a modification might able to keep your home. it will be reasonable. "the wall street journal" is reporting on the government report that it is mixed for the bank, though. if the bank loses money, they don't get the principal back but have a much higher chance of getting something back instead of nothing. they don't want a foreclosure. it is not good for them either. back to you, natasha. >> thanks so much. good info to have there. here's stories we are
